Steven Stennett When is book to short! What is the minimum page count that you would consider long enough to call a piece of work a novel?

Anna this is why that book is classified as Light Novel. Usually under 200pages

Steven Stennett Would it put you off purchasing or reading such a book? Is there a market for such a thing? stupid question really because you have read such a work, Did you have any reservations.

Anna I have read a bunch of light novels! Japan makes these things in packs of all sorts of genres & themes

It helps if you think of them as pulp fiction - short, crazy, most often happens in a series of volumes over a year

Budd While short, I prefer to be left wanting more, than to have to read a hundred extra pages of meandering.

Steven Stennett I hear you man. Makes sense!!

Scott I don't see this as a "light novel." It's just as long as it needs to be.

Steven Stennett Yep your right its not always necessary to world build. somtimes the meat of the story is enough!!!!

Steven Stennett Will the film be any good, and will Tom Cruise be running in it! :-)

Peter Brickwood Pretty much all "young reader" books are about this long.

What is the distinction between a "light" novel and "novella"?

Scott A novella is much shorter.

"Light" refers to the subject matter, not the weight of the book.

Steven Stennett Ah and here lays with me, the crux of the matter!

A book could be no more than a page.

But in this solitary sheet of digital or physical paper, could be the greatest book ever written!!!!

Is this possible, pray could it ever happen?

Marcus I actually like the light novel idea. I enjoyed it, the book.

Interesting you say that... Have you heard of flash fiction, or the 6 word novel? Hemingway supposedly wrote this one, story goes like this, from Wikipedia:

In a 1992 letter to Canadian humorist John Robert Colombo, science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke recounts it thus: While lunching with friends at a restaurant, Hemingway bets the table ten dollars each that he can craft an entire story in six words. After the pot is assembled, Hemingway writes "For sale: baby shoes, never worn" on a napkin, passes this around the table, and collects his winnings.

Steven Stennett I like that, so basically a very well written book of one thousand pages is just as good as, an equally well written book of a page?

Is it as satisfying?

Marcus A novel is not a real novel unless it is around 300 pages

Steven Stennett Interesting. What's you definition of a novel. Apart from it needing to be 300 pages long?

Scott So a 300 page book in larger print is a novel, but a 200 page book with very small print is not.

Steven Stennett There is this thing were people equate value for money, sometimes, over quality.

For me, a book that delivers a story that has me thinking about it long after I have read it, has more merit, than a longer prose, that disappears from my conscious as soon as it has been read.

What I am trying to say, is that there should never be a page number placed on a books ability to entertain, or to be worth somebody's time to read.

The reality for me, is that all books should be consider as a source of recreation, regardless of their length.

A thousand page book, should not be looked upon more favorably than a hundred page effort.

The Lady Astronaut of Mars: A Tor.Com Original is my case in point.

31 pages. I am not telling any one to read it. I am just using as a case in point!!
