I wasn't a huge fan of this book, though I know so many who were. I didn't get a chance to read on in the series, yet. I want to but I need more TIME!

It's funny. "Real" was one of my first indie reads. I rated it five stars but have been lately thinking, if I read it now, would I still rate it this high? I loved the premise and the topic. Back then I loved Remy and Brooke. Now I fear that Brooke would piss me off something fierce.

There are some books I've read in the past that I rated pretty high, and looking back now, I might not enjoy them at much. It really does matter when and where you read a book, and what point of your life you're in. *SHRUGS* Oh, well! I leave the ratings, because they were accurate for me at that time :)

Looks like Inked (Inked #1) by Eric Smith is going to probably be a DNF. It's ALL telling. I am just not getting sucked in. I'm at 26% and I'm going to give it until 30% and be done. This year has been the year of DNFs :(

Yeah, I don't really change ratings either. But it's fascinating how the rating of a book is influenced by so many factors.

Same here. I don't think I had a year with this many DNF or low ratings. But then I just don't have the patience for bad books anymore.
At the same time, it was the year with some of the best books I've ever read. So I guess I can't complain.

I agree!

The same goes for books I didn't enjoy. Sometimes its just my mood, and there are times I'll go back to a DNF much later and end up liking it!

I've definitely had my share of DNF books this year. My problem is I get bored too easily. That being said, in the past I was a lot more critical of books but since becoming an author myself I've realized how tough it can be, so I've become a bit more open in my expectations.

I started Paladin by Sally Slater and I'm enjoying it this far. I will need to take a fantasy break for sure after I'm done with it. I think Let Her Go by M.R. Pritchard will be next.

I certainly get that. And I know it's not easy to write. But I do get annoyed with traditionally published books from big publishers that seem like they were just pushed through to publication without proper care taken to edit and fix them. I've edited my own book a minimum of 10 times and had about 20 beta readers give me feedback. I want to have it edited professionally, but it's not cheap. Again, I know writing is not easy, but I can also tell when it's an inherent thing for an author and when it's pushed from someone who doesn't quite have the talent or hasn't honed the craft well yet. I guess I'm just picky, critical, not sure what to call it.

message 23822: by MadameZelda (new)

MadameZelda I have started reading an older book, Midnight Alley (The Morganville Vampires, #3) by Rachel Caine , book 3 of 15. I will probably stop at this book because I feel there's constant arguments between the four main characters and the Morganville world is so depressing.

I hear you. I've definitely read books that have left me thinking how the hell did this writer get an agent much less a publishing contract. And then you read the acknowledgements section at the back and there's this long list of well known authors there and you think they must have had some sort of in. And yes, editing is crazy expensive if you want it done right, but well worth the investment. I went through a few before I found my dream editor, but she ain't cheap that's for sure.
