What did everyone think?

Jonelle (joco) | 16 comments I found it a beautifully written book that explores the feelings about Negros of that time. The book is both enjoyable and sad. It is a short, quick read. Full with issues about relationships, jealousy, loyalty, identity, race, love, friendship, and human nature.
It made me think; how sad it must be to hide who you are and to live a lie.
Clare had it all but couldn't be with who she wanted. 'Rene was with who she thought she wanted, but couldn't have it all.
They both lost in the end. Clare - her physical life and Irene - her emotional life.

Tina (librariantee) What a lovely layered text, and what a tragedy that so few people know of it! This was the only book on the list of 23 that I had never heard of. I'm so glad that it has crossed my path. It reminded me of a lot of literature I read in university (I have a double literature degree, so I read a LOT of lit) and is definitely strong enough to stand up to the best of those stories.

I was fascinated by Claire, and really questioned her motivations. I found that she has more depth than the purely selfish (think Daisy in Gatsby) but at the same time she did end up putting herself first in all things.

Did anyone predict the ending? Looking back there were so many hints but I was totally surprised!

I didn't predict the ending, at all. It was rather abrupt, but it was perfect just that way. I loved how it was ambiguous to Irene - did she really push Claire over? My guess is yes, but there was enough question in Irene's mind that I wasn't entirely sure.

Leah Lynch | 4 comments I was surprised at how much I liked it. I've always struggled reading classics, and the main reason I joined the group was to expand my reading choices.

I had no idea that 'passing' was even a thing and was really intrigued by it. Especially by how after Claire successfully "passed" she wanted to go back.

I agree with Melissa, the ending was left up to interpretation, but I do think that Irene pushed Claire, I think she would have done anything to save her marriage.

But does anyone think her husband stayed with her after? He most likely did, as divorce was not as common then.

Great read.
