Harold Anite spoiler alert

Especially After Warren died. I think Pamela gets off too easy in all this, the way she was tempting a married man.
I never understood this angle of the book, with all that was going on did we really need this soap opera, was it made clear somewhere that Rhoda stopped loving him, its a very weird relationship.
Is the break-up of their marriage symbolic of a seismic change in American culture brought on by the War

April Please don't post spoilers in the TITLES of things that will show up where people still reading the book are just looking at fellow reviews. Or at least put "SPOILER ALERT" in the title before the spoiler, so we can avoid. Thank you

Louise i think it was the times. pug was gone all the time and thrown together with him.

Louise pamela i mean

Susan I never could form any attachment to Rboda, and didn't particularly care what happened to her. That said, I don't like to see a marriage break up.

Michelle Awwww come on!!! This wasn't in Winds of War (which I recently finished) but must be in War and Remberance (which I just started). So, if you're going to put a spoiler in the question you are posting at least put it in the correct book!!!

Susan Sorry Michelle. It is no excuse, but when you read two long books like that, it is hard to remember where one left off and the other began.

Naren The actual break up happened in War and Rememberance. Winds of war was when Pamela and Pug went to Russia and England

Jeanine Celentano I enjoyed the movie very much and glad I didn't read the books

What a strange thing to say. Why would you be glad that you didn't read the books. (The books are actually quite good, and IMHO better than the TV miniseries. There wasn't a movie.)

Debra These two books are among the best ones I've listened to. I love learning about history while being entertained with a fictional story simultaneously! The narrator is about the best!!

Anthony O'Brian If you read Herman Wouk's other works it is easy, in my opinion, to see why he did this. I don't think he wanted to write a book that would make everybody happy, but would help them to see the reality and cruelty of civil and military duty on families during war time. His other two book series, "The Hope" and "The Glory" are INDISPENSABLE for anyone wishing to know about Israel, Yom Kippur and Six-Day War, as well as their struggle for independence and survival.
That being said, there are parts that can be frustrating to people (like me) that just wish people would do the right and sensible things. Yet, when they are completed you have a correct sense of how the dynamics of such an undertaking, whether it be WWII or Israel's wars, leave an indelible mark and forever change people -with no going back. During these times, people make the wrong decision and it dogs them to their life's end.

I LOVED THE BOOKS AND THEY ARE TWO OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES!! Try "The Caine Mutiny" as well...

Rt I don't believe Pug and Rhoda should have stayed together. She seemed quite shallow from the beginning, and she was the first in the relationship to practice infidelity, so it was right that they separated.

I TRIED to watch the miniseries after reading both books. I couldn't get past 10 minutes because the actors felt all wrong! The books are fantastic & I highly recommend reading them.

That happens with many movies and miniseries. Pug was short and pugnacious, and I pictured him as more of a Glenn Ford type than Robert Mitchum. Robert Mitchum was only good as a villain. And Allie McGraw -- well, she was NOT Natalie.

Channah Okay, I don't swear, so you'll have to fill in your necessary equivalent, but what on Earth?
1) You posted this in the first book's forums when it was about the next book.
2) That's a spoiler there in the title.
3) When I opened this thread because I'd read the first book I was instantly exposed to unavoidable spoilers for the next book.

Thank you for ruining this book series that I was really looking forward to the next book in for me. I have honestly never seen worse manners when it comes to book spoilers. Someone with power please remove this thread. If it were me I wouldn't be above banning the original poster, either, but it's not.

Diana Long Please do not be put off from reading the work, I as well think this post should be removed but the Rhoda and Pug scenario is only one tiny fragment in the greater work and what remains is well worth the read. I try to show care when even doing a review to not give away the plots of a story. I can only think that the original post was not done with malice or intent to spoil the books for others. I have not seen the film version yet of this book but thought that the series for Winds of War did a good job in following the original story line. As for the actors, I did not have a problem with the cast and really hope that Hollywood does not do a remake as I have so often seen. I hope that those who have not read both Winds of War and War and Remembrance will someday do so, they are both exceptional literary works.

I've both read the books and seen the TV movies (movies or mini-series? I don't remember - what I saw was on TV with Robert Mitchum) - loved them both, and found each satisfying in its own way.

Drush76 From the moment Rhoda became involved with Palmer Kirby, I knew that her marriage to Pug was through. So, no . . . I don't think they should have stayed together.
