The Name of the Wind Discussion!

Maybe I misunderstood--I thought we were reading and discussing it for next month. If you guys would rather do that for January than finish (or at least attempt to!) Name of the Wind that's cool, I just probably won't be able to get the book in time to finish reading and discuss at the end of this month.

I am on 186. Kvothe is digesting what he knows about Lanre.

I love the way mythology is wrapped into the story of Kvothe, which is being packaged into a saga by a slightly older Kvothe.
I really liked the structure of this books. It was a nice twist on the "innocent normal [farm] boy becomes a famous hero" cliche of fantasy novels.
First because it starts off from when that boy is ALREADY a legend.
And second because instead of becoming a hero, somehow Kvothe fucked everything up.

Kvothe would have become a total hero if (view spoiler) . I am glad he doesn't do everything perfectly. The early childhood chapters made him sound like a Mary Sue.
Hah! Glad to hear that changes, because I've been thinking, "Mary Sue...?" while trying to reconcile that with the massive public love for this book.
In book 2 he becomes a massive Mary Sue with an almost magical penis.
But I love this series anyway.

I am making progress! Just finished the part where he meets Skarpi and hears the stories about Lanre and Selitos. And now it's off to university! And I have the Chandrian chant stuck in my head. :c Also, loling about Kvothe's magical Mary Sue penis. Sounds...fantastic. XD
Also also, I am dying to find out whether he finishes telling Chronicler his story in this book and the next book is all things unfolding in the present, or if it will be more tale-telling in the inn in podunk nowheresville with creepy spiders moving in. Or something else entirely! I guess time will tell.
Yessssss. I'm really hoping Elodin one day gets his own series. He only gets more awesome as time goes on.
Ermahgerd, I finished the book! Pretty awesome. I'm so glad the (view spoiler) I want to poke Ambrose in the eye, but what's a school story without a foil for our protag? And unfortunately, I found the Kvothe-in-the-inn parts to be a bit boring. (view spoiler)
Woah you must've liked this book to finish it so fast!! Should we book group discussion it soon?
I think maybe no one else will have finished it by month's end, but that doesn't mean we can't discuss it! :D
yay! my thoughts are a bit stale on this but still fairly strong. They are mostly:
Deanna: Hate
Elodin: Love
Young Kvothe: Badass
Old Kvothe: Sad :(

I am on page 80. Kvothe has started calling himself Kvothe again, and has just begun to tell his story.
