Karen Russell's gorgeous, disturbing debut novel, Swamplandia, has elements of the paranormal and is set in the Ten Thousand Islands region of the Everglades. There's a ghost story within the novel that could stand alone as one of the best short stories I've ever read: the story of a Depression-era dredge crew digging one of the drainage canals in the Everglades.
