January 2014 Reading Challenge: New Year, New Book

It's a brand new year, so this month we are asking you to read a new book. It could be a new release or just new to you. Challenge yourself by reading something you wouldn't typically read or perhaps tie your book in with a new resolution.

I'll be reading Thinking, Fast and Slow in support of my resolution to read more nonfiction and learn new things.

I just started reading "A Game of Thrones" on eBook (my first one!) and I will eventually start reading the Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan.

As soon as I finish "The Prince of Risk" for my book group, I'm going to read Chang Rae-Lee's newest book, "On Such a Full Sea," a departure in genre and style from Lee's past novels. I don't typically read about finance ("PofR") and while Chang Rae-Lee has become an author I follow, I don't typically read dystopian fiction. I should also add a nonfiction book to my January list since I gravitate to fiction 98% of the time, but I have 3 novels checked out of the library so need to tackle those soon. I'm looking forward to seeing what others are reading for this January challenge. Now if we'd just get some much-needed rain, I'd have an excuse to stay home and read!

Reading Night Film by Marisha Pessl. Loving it so far, but I hear it takes a turn about halfway through. I'm almost halfway through, so...

I have read 5 books so far this year but all in genres I normally read. So, similar to the book suggested, that one was unavailable, I will try The Most Human Human: What Talking with Computers Teaches Us About What It Means to Be Alive

I'm finding Thinking, Fast and Slow very interesting and it covers topics like The Selective Attention test, which everyone may have seen by now, but it's on YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJG698.... I've taken a few breaks from it to read fiction and I'm still on the first few chapters. I remember being curious about The Most Human Human when it came out, so you'll have to let me know how it goes.

How is everyone else's new book for the new year going?

I read Eleanor & Park, which is not something I would normally pick up. YA Romance is typically not my thing. I really enjoyed the book, which surprised me.
