Why did Peter stab Edward?

Did Roth ever expand upon this? It was alluded briefly in Insurgent that perhaps Peter did not stab Edward for ranking higher than him. I don't think that Allegiant ever elaborated this. I may be wrong, maybe I missed something, so does anyone know?

In Insurgent, though, there was a brief conversation where it was revealed that Edward may have provoked Peter (beyond just beating him in initiation). I don't think they ever said what he did.

Matthew They never did say. Veronica Roth mentioned in an interview she wanted to keep it open, and just hint that Edward was not merely an innocent victim

Peter wanted to take out his competition. He tried to get rid of Tris too when she started doing well.

Although they hinted that Edward did something to antagonize Peter first. Not that that justifies it though.
Actually, there was probably alot of crap going back and forth between alot of the initiates that we don't know about. Peter just took everything too far.

Yes. Peter stabbed Edward in the eye because he was doing better than him on the tests.

he was jealous and didn't want to be anything lower than #1
