Tanya (shesawriter) | 10 comments I'm hoping someone can help me. Goodreads said I was eligible to apply to be a Librarian so I applied months ago, and heard nothing.

So I applied again, and I haven't heard anything still. I'm an active member on the site with many books on my shelves. What other criteria is there? How does this work? How long does it usually take to be approved?

Empress (the_empress) Oh it's a coin-toss!

Joking. :)

Sorry to say this but you will not be approved, librarian rights are never [to my knowledge] given to authors.

You can still add books to the system and post here any editions that need fixing.

Tanya (shesawriter) | 10 comments Hi Elle,

Thanks so much for the reply. I applied way before I was an author. This was last year--at least two to three months ago.

I just became a Goodread's author a couple days ago.

Also I do know of at least one author who is a librarian so is this a new rule?

They approve when [we assume] they need librarians. I guess it works in the favor of the applicant if they are not from US|UK|NZ or elsewhere where they speak English.

The author rule is not new, but many authors THINK they are Librarians, because they have LIMITED editing rights on their own books. When you do edits or add books in your profile will say "#N Librarian", but, that is not a librarian. If you are a librarian in the profile will say Goodreads Librarian. And authors are never given that status. So I wouldn't trust what the person is telling you. If you look at most topics posted here from new authors they start with - I am a librarian but I cannot upload a cover to my book! or something like that. Well that is because they are not librarians.

There might be an exception though, that I am not familiar with.

Edit: I personally think that even if you were a librarian ones you acquired the author status that rights would have been taken away.

Tanya (shesawriter) | 10 comments Okay, that makes sense, Elle! Thanks so much for clearing this up. You've been very, very helpful. :-)

I guess I'll be coming back here to beg you in June to help me upload my cover. lol This whole process is confusing to me. Anyway, stay tuned and thanks again. :-)

Empress (the_empress) No problem Tanya,

you can still add books into the database and you can combine the ones you are author of.

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments Actually, many years ago GR Authors did get librarian status, but almost all of them have been converted to the proper author status now.

Thanks. Didn't know that.

Banjomike | 5166 comments There doesn't seem to be much of a shortage of authors who have the ability to edit books & covers that are not theirs which would mark them as librarians.

Pluto Press (plutopress) | 2 comments I'm working for a publisher and have requested librarian status. I have move than enough books, and plenty of friends, and will be active on Goodreads. I applied for librarian status last week and have heared nothing - how long does it usually take, and is it guaranteed?

Thanks,
Emily.

Absolutely NOT guaranteed. Goodreads does not always need more librarians. It can take anything from hours to a week to hear (by email) that you have been successful. If you are not successful you won't hear anything. Be patient, you've only been on Goodreads for a very short time.

Pluto Press (plutopress) | 2 comments Ahhh ok I see! One more quick question - can you do giveaways if you do not have librarian status? Thanks.

I don't know. I don't see why librarian status should have any effect. Try filling the boxes in and see what happens.

Librarian status is not required for giveaways.

In the meantime you can always post any requests for edits in this groups. The librarians here are pretty efficient. You can also add books to the database. You don't need to be a librarian for that. All you need is to familiarize yourself with the librarian manual: https://www.goodreads.com/librarian_m...

Carolyn Mahony | 3 comments How can I stop receiving all these threads. I still want to belong to the group but don't want every message coming into my message box?
