James Joyce published his first novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, in 1916. He had begun an earlier version in 1903, which he called Stephen Hero, but abandoned the project in that form.

The public domain text that I have does not include notes on the text, so these links are helpful in explaining some of the unfamiliar references and vocabulary.

I haven't used either enough to say which is more useful, but in tandem the two links have answered most of my questions so far.
