More Than This - Interpretations

There is so much to this book. I don't want to try and cram the book into some box of clichéd meaning that it is obviously so much bigger than, but there is so much more than just what the events describe.

Is this a purgatory scenario? Complete with angels and demons making their influence known when possible?

Is this hell? Why not?

Is this a viable post-apocalyptic world?

What impact do online events have on the real world? Vice versa?

Why are the injuries sustained by the three characters at the end so oddly specific and possibly related to their death stories?

Jump in and let's get discussing! Pick your favorite interpretation and expound. Shoot down some of these possible meanings. Or tell us why we shouldn't interpret it at all! :)

*Spoilers ahead.* Hi. It's been a few months since I read this book, so some of the details have faded from my memory, but I'll give you my impressions of what I thought was going on in the story. And I want to add that I don't think there are any clear cut answers to most of your questions because the author left it up to his readers to put whatever spin they wanted on his story.

So, what I believe happened is this: I think that Seth and his friends were all suffering from head injuries that put them in comas. I believe that they still lived, but in a half conscious way. They met each other in this state in what might be termed an astral plane where they could communicate and encourage each other to choose life over death. I think that the sinister thing after them was a symbol for someone really trying to help them move past their fears, keeping them on life support, physically and mentally, in a way. There were references to Seth being thirsty and having a sore throat that was dry. I think this was because he had a tube down his throat in real life. Same goes when he got slammed in the chest. I think he coded in the hospital and they were using the paddles to jump start his heart. There were other things that made me believe the scenario above, though I can't recall them now. But I think the important thing is the message conveyed in the story, no matter what happened and why. And what I took away from it was a life affirming message to hold on, when all seems lost.

It's all very fascinating, and you both made some good points here. But the part that gets me confused is when (view spoiler). It really spoiled the book for me, because how can you possibly get attached to a character and care for him if (view spoiler) Yes, there are multiple instances in the novel of Seth himself wondering if (view spoiler). And all of his world is so over-the-top, that such explanation might be the most sensible one. But if it were so, where does it leave us?
Thanks to everyone who will be able to shed some light on the subject :).
