The End of the World (But Not Really) ~ A Not-So Austen Fanfic (NSF) by Booknut101

Based on the Skulduggery Pleasant series.

Part I

Normal teenagers get to spend their holidays doing normal stuff - shopping, watching television...procrastinating on schoolwork and eating plenty of chocolate to tide them over to the next term of school and endless boredom.

With me, there was no such luck normally. But this year was turning out far worse.

"What do you mean I can't sleep in?" I demanded of Skulduggery.

I was on the phone, sitting upright in my bed amid a swirl of bedsheets whose warmth was far more appealing than the sound of Skulduggery's voice at 6:00am.

"I thought the meaning was perfectly obvious," was Skulduggery's reply.

I sighed in exasperation. "You know what I meant."
"There's an emergency."
"No emergency is important enough that it can disturb my beauty sleep."
"Valkyrie you don't need beauty sleep."

I shrugged. "I know I'm gorgeous but a little R&R never hurt anyone."
"The world is ending."

I yawned, frowning as I did so. "Is it ending as in 'like all the other times it was supposedly going to be blown up by the disciples of the Faceless Ones'? Or is it ending as in 'war, fire, blood and guts'?"
"War, fire, blood, guts and a lot of swearing most likely."

Hopping out of bed, I began searching through my uni-coloured wardrobe. Ghastly had made me a range of cute black coats and I shrugged one on over my black ensemble. "Fine. I'm up."
"Good. Because I'm outside your house as we speak."

"So you weren't going to give me a choice?" I asked in disbelief.
"No. I was going to give you the choice of coming voluntarily or being dragged by your hair."

I hung up with a sigh. Skulduggery - honestly.

He was so melodramatic for a guy who, for all his skeletal appearance, was sadly lacking a funny bone.

*****

The sun was just peeking out, crowned with a scattering of pink-dusted clouds, as I jumped from my bedroom window and into the yard below. Double-checking the state of my hair, I walked over to the curb, where Skulduggery was waiting beside his beloved Bentley.

"Good morning, Skulduggery," I said with a smile. True, waking up early was a pain, but it was hard to stay bitter, what with the cool morning air and the blissful quiet.

Besides, being in a good mood was one of the best ways to annoy Skulduggery.

As if on cue, he turned to stare at me with empty sockets, his head tilting slightly. "You look...happy."
"Yes." I didn't elaborate.
"Good to see that the end of the world is agreeing with you," said the skeleton. "Now get off the Bentley."

I straightened with a sigh, no longer leaning against the car. Some things never change.

(to be cont.)
