Sarah | 7 comments Hey, I found this book in the teen section at my library years ago. It's set in a latin american country (I'm fairly certain colombia or brazil) and is about a boy growing up. He lives with his mother and his father's brother who his mother remarried after his father left (died?) His uncle is abusive.

The boy is close friends with another boy and, I think, has a crush on his older sister. His friend gets involved with a gang and is paid to kill for them as the govt doesn't prosecute children (or something)
The friend dies and I think the protagonist replaces him killing people and making quite a bit of money.

The rest is quite vague, I think he has an altercation with his uncle (killing him?), possibly gets together with his friend's sister?

The ending takes place on top of a mountain (?) and ends with his suicide. Ah actually, I don't think he kills his uncle, but his uncle is there when he kills himself.

On the copy of the book I read I'm fairly certain there was a recommendation quote from Melvin Burgess. If that helps :)

Apologies if my description is vague, I just previewed and I sound really rambly :/

It's frustrating because I can remember the book pretty clearly but I'm pretty bad at remebering characters names and describing the plot :/

I read it in my teens and I'm fairly certain it was published after the mid nineties maybe even 2000, not certain though.

I'd really read like to read it again and it's driving me crazy! Thanks guys :)

Nicola (theowabba) | 24 comments It definitely sounds like Boy Kills Man by Matt Whyman.
Brief description: Shorty and Alberto are more than best friends. They're blood brothers, both about to turn thirteen, running wild on the streets of Medellin, Colombia
