Similarities between Flowers for Algernon and Understand (shot story) by Ted Chiang

Have any of you read "Understand" by Ted Chiang? I think that as readers of "Flowers..", it's a great recommendation because of the similar theme between the two stories.

The plot has some really big similarities, it starts a guy who became more intelligent by an experiment (in this case he is a normal guy that due to an accident ends in a near comatose state). At first it seems like Charlie's development in Flowers for Algernon, but soon the guy in this story develops a god-like intelligence and the story turns out completely different from "Flowers..."

Here is the short story if some of you want to read it, I read it in the book "Stories of your life and others", that I also recommend to all SF readers.
