28) So suspects are dropping like flies. Every time I think I know who dunnit, I am proven wrong. Zombies appear to be getting beheaded. That puts a damper on the whole heads being taken for their brains theory. Dr. Leblanc suggested that sometimes seemingly related things aren't. Could that be what we're seeing or is something nefarious going on? Is there a Zombie slayer in the area?

29) So in this section Angel appears to be finally taking charge of her life and gaining a backbone. She realizes she can't stay with her father and she's decided to move on from her boyfriend. I liked that she now senses her own self worth and isn't letting someone else define her. The only thing that left a bad taste in my mouth was her mentioning the drugs to her boyfriend. Anyone else think he's going to want to take advantage of her position? He seems like a total user to me.

30) The watch incident...it made me smile and I liked how touched Angel was by it. She's even been given a nickname--the Angel of Death--by one of her coworkers. Who is your favorite secondary character at this point? I think we're finally starting to get a feel for them all.

31) So I like the author's imagination. The cadaver dog incident was interesting and Angel wasn't even having a lapse in her brain diet. Does that mean she always has the faint scent of death and rot on her? I wonder if zombies can procreate like a normal person? Unlike vamps, they seem to have a pulse and the doctors didn't notice anything wrong with them when they were being examined. Is there anything you're curious about?

32) Angel mentioned she wondered if her Zombie daddy had been slain. What do you think? He's been awful quiet.

10. Is anyone else officially grossed out by the descriptions in this portion? BRAINS...(Said in my best zombie voice) Gah! I guess we had to expect it.
Dunno. After the last book maybe I'm desensitized.

Ewww. Just googled monkey brains. Pictures that really shouldn't exist are up. Yuck.

11. Can you imagine the inner struggle if you're brain was still functioning normally and you craved brains and could actually smell them? Angel's wondering if she's insane or a monster. Over the years we've seen many authors redefine other supernatural creatures and give them a more human traits. We've seen vegan vamps, demons with a conscious, etc. Zombies are among the newest to join their ranks. What do you think of Diane Rowland's redefinition/makeover of the classic zombie?
I'm curious about the animal brains. That seems to be what they do for the other creatures too where they exist on animal blood. I suppose the morgue for zombies is kinda like the blood bank for vampires. I wonder if it's one of those animal brains help some but not all. I wish she had come up with a good scientific reason to need the brains.

12. If you were Angel, would you be mad at whoever turned you? What about the person who knows what you are but isn't letting you know who he or she is (If they aren't the same person)? I think I'd have wanted more guidance. Angel has a lot to deal with. Do you think the gradual realization of it all would be better than just being told up front what she's become?
I'm surprised she hasn't really considered who turned her. I'd probably be a bit angry at the random person leaving the notes. Its probably what kids feel for their parents when the parent's keep saying "well what do you think 2 plus 2 is?"

13. Do you find it strange that Marcus seems to be noticeably hovering about her? Could he not trust her since he knows her background or is something else going on? Marcus did seem kind of embarrassed when Derrel suggested he might be attracted to her.
I was wondering if maybe he was the person leaving the notes. I kinda expect it to be someone she knows or interacts with. Otherwise how did they find out about her?

14. So heads are missing and a zombie tried to injure or kill Angel to get brains. Could there be a connection or would that be too obvious? He obviously didn't make Angel as he seemed surprised to find she was a newly made zombie. I wonder how many there are out there?
Seems like a zombie moved into town. If the other zombie always killed and took the heads then I'd expect they'd have noticed before. Or maybe his previous source of brains dried up.

15. At least Angel now knows what she is. What happened to her not so mentoring mentor? She could have used a little help after her accident. I wonder if she's heard the last from them?
I'm guessing she'll hear around the 1 month mark. Wasn't the last note at 2 weeks in?

16. The more we learn about Angel's past, the more I sympathize with her. Do you feel the same? First, she was worried Marcus was reserving the dirt he had on her for a more devastating reveal time, and then we learn about her mother. Her boyfriend didn't seem all that great or caring. Her dad is definitely no role model. Her comment about how anyone having a problem with her keeping her father stocked in liquor should try to live with him for a week makes me think he's not a pleasant person to be around when he goes through withdrawal.
I'm kinda surprised she's still living with him. You'd think she'd be able to get a small apartment now with her salary. But I suppose she must care about him some.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments I have to laugh. I just got the audio book of Stiff from my library and after seeing all the comments from people I'm wondering if I should continue to listen to it. From the small amount I've listened too, there does seem to be a major 'Ew!' factor. Was it good though?

Zonnah | 457 comments Lisarenee wrote: "Was it good though? "

My rating was 3 stars. I think the things I learned from the book helped me get past some of the yucky parts.

37)Angel and her father finally had a talk. Maybe cleaning the trash cans was the fist step.

38)Tapioca pudding? Yuck. Is it me, or this book gravitates around food?

39)Final thoughts? How did you rate it. Will you continue with the series? Is it good enough to have its own spot on own Feature Series Read folder?

It does. I think Gena Showalter did something similar in her Alice in Zombieland series except she gave the zombies traits from a lot of different supernatural species.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Kelly, "I was wondering if maybe he was the person leaving the notes. I kinda expect it to be someone she knows or interacts with. Otherwise how did they find out about her?"

The author didn't really give us a lot of clues as to who turned her.

Kelly (ladykatala) | 5020 comments Questions and Comments for Chapters 14-21

17. Kang told us a little about zombies, at least how they are made: 1. Be near death. 2. Get bitten to hell. 3. Eat brains immediately. What do you think of the transformation process?
Seems a lot like the vampire transformation process. Get all your blood sucked out, get blood from vampire, feed from human. I think the be near death part is new. Also some zombie stories have small bites or scratches converting people. I suppose it's good to have it be somewhat hard to convert someone new or there'd be zombies everywhere. Makes you wonder why someone would ever convert someone since it'd just be new person to reduce the number of brains available.

18. What do you think of Kang? Do you think he's a good or bad guy? Will he be a problem?
He's probably a decent guy but I'd imagine living for 60+ years as a 20 year old must be hard. You'd have to move and such to keep out of the public eye. Probably gets tiring and wears on your personality.

19. Angel handled herself pretty well with Kang. Do you think she should have given in? Or was it good that she stood up for herself?
I think she had to stand up for herself. She can't afford to need to purchase the brains.

20. Did Angel really thinks Zombies would help? She must really know nothing about the typical media zombie.
Dunno. If I was in that situation and had no other source of information I might have tried it too. Internet at a library probably would have been a better source.

21. To me it feels like a lot of vampire traits are being given to zombies in this book: anti-aging, eat brains for strength (blood for vamps), etc. What do you think of this take on zombies?
Seems a bit like it's trying to capitalize on the vampire and zombie craze that's going on. I wish they had some other special trait. I'm guessing she becomes a death investigator person with some sort of zombie death investigatory abilities. I also wish they explained the need for brains. It doesn't really make much sense why it needs to be human brains.

22. Zeke returns. Do you think Angel should help him out? Good guy or bad guy or something in between?
She should, since she said she would. I don't think he's a bad guy per say but starving all the time must be really hard.

23. What did you think of the fight with her dad? Do you think she should cut him loose or try to help him?
I think the best way to help people in those situations are to cut them loose. If you keep doing the same thing that has them in the rut then there's never any inspiration to get out. Once they start trying to help themselves then you can step back in and help.

24. What do you think of all these missing brains? Do you think it's Zeke? It's interesting that the brains started going missing once Angel was turned. Coincidence?
I don't think it's Zeke. He doesn't seem smart enough not to get caught. Plus if he's starving he probably would have eaten the dust covered brains.

25. Looks like a budding relationship between Angel and Ivanov. Expected? Do you think Ivanonv reciprocates the feelings?
He acts like he does. I think it's nice. Being friends with a cop may help her keep on the right path.

26. Do you think Angel should have called Kang with her suspicions? Do you think he'll be helpful or just blow her off? I wonder if he's dealt with something like this before since he's so old.
I don't think she has anyone else she can call to help with. Maybe there's a zombie counsel he knows about :) I'd imagine they all have a desire to stay under the radar.

27. We're about halfway through the book now. What are your thoughts so far? Predictions for the end?
I think she'll become a death investigator.

I suppose the default zombie thing of super stupid and not able to interact doesn't really work well for secret "could be your neighbor" type zombies. I think the whole "they live among us" theme is in now. Even with Harry Potter people liked the idea of wizards living next door. Most of the vampire books are like that too with vampires being the "bad boys" but not truly evil.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Oh also, I wonder if the "zombie slayer" has been around awhile since they found the headless bodies in the swamp awhile back, according to Dr. Leblanc. Maybe this is something that's been happening for a long time and the guy is getting sloppy? Or maybe it's a guy following in his footsteps?

28) So suspects are dropping like flies. Every time I think I know who dunnit, I am proven wrong. Zombies appear to be getting beheaded. That puts a damper on the whole heads being taken for their brains theory. Dr. Leblanc suggested that sometimes seemingly related things aren't. Could that be what we're seeing or is something nefarious going on? Is there a Zombie slayer in the area?
I think there might be, though I’m certain the guys found with the bashed in heads were killed by Zeke. The decapitations may be a zombie slayer.

That left a bad taste in my mouth as well. I was shaking my head while reading it, thinking she was setting herself up for trouble. There is no way he is going to let that comment slide, he is going to want to use her and I hope she is strong enough to resist.

30) The watch incident...it made me smile and I liked how touched Angel was by it. She's even been given a nickname--the Angel of Death--by one of her coworkers. Who is your favorite secondary character at this point? I think we're finally starting to get a feel for them all.
Nick has a good side to him, I was astonished. I have two favorite secondary characters, the pathologist, because he is going out of his way to teach her and Derrel because he is very accepting of Angel he knows her past and he gives her the benefit of the doubt. I think they are both the biggest reason for Angels growth.

So do I, I think she always has the scent, but a human nose is not sensitive enough to pick it up and a dogs nose is. I don’t know if they can procreate, they need those brains to keep their pulse going so they shouldn’t visit a doctor when they are low on brain. There is nothing I’m curious about.<?i>

32) Angel mentioned she wondered if her Zombie daddy had been slain. What do you think? He's been awful quiet.
I don’t think he’s been slain, I think he’s going to let Angel prove herself or he’s just busy with other things.

33)Kang's way of storing brains is ingenious. Although it looks like "awful convenient" Angel now has plenty of brains on hand, don't you think?
For the moment, I don’t know if the other zombie clients of Kang know about the stash I hope she can hang on to it.

34)As predicted, Randy decided to take advantage of the pills. And the way he accused her of already using them? What a jerk. But, it was the final push that Angel needed to move on. Atta girl.
Yeah, this part showed just how much she’s grown during the book. Dying was the best thing that could have happened to her.

35)Wait what? Marcus is the zombie who created her and Ed is the zombie slayer? Where did that came from? Did you suspect that?
Well…. I thought Marcus might be the zombie daddy, but I totally didn’t suspect Ed, I thought he was such a good guy.,/i>

36)On the other hand, having a girlfriend with her own zombie detector was a nice touch. Do you think we heard the last of Ed? Will he still be around on the next books?
The zombie sniffer was a great find, hmmmmmmmmmm I think Ed will make an appearance in the next book/books.

37)Angel and her father finally had a talk. Maybe cleaning the trash cans was the fist step.
Maybe, but I don’t hold out to much hope.

38)Tapioca pudding? Yuck. Is it me, or this book gravitates around food?
It does.

39)Final thoughts? How did you rate it. Will you continue with the series? Is it good enough to have its own spot on own Feature Series Read folder?
I liked the book and rated it 3 stars, I will definitely read the other books in the series. The start was a little hard, but it got much better towards the end. I think it is good enough for a spot in the Feature Series Read folder.

Anima Miejska | 757 comments I finished the book today, and I have mixed feelings about it. I really liked the different approach to zombies, with their "normal" lives and thinking abilities and generally "proper" behaviour, the rest was rather predictable and not very exciting. I rated it three stars, but I think I would be willing to continue with the series. I really curious about Marcus and Angel (I suspected it was him who changed her from the beginning *grins*, love was in the air :D). All in all, I think this book is an interesting experiment and hope it will develop to a more exciting and less predictable second and third part.

Questions and Comments for Chapters 7 - 13

10.10. Is anyone else officially grossed out by the descriptions in this portion? BRAINS...(Said in my best zombie voice) Gah! I guess we had to expect it.

It is so gross. Just the thought of the smell too is making it more gross.

No, that's just nasty. I think she did a good job of making a Zombie look and feel as human can be. She made you think that Zombie's also have there issues too as any human does.

Yes, definitely especially that they change you and don't even give you "directions" on how to go about this or at least tell you why they did it without even letting you make that decision to whether you want to be a Zombie or not. At least tell her something so that she isn't totally in the dark and scrambling for information.

13. Do you find it strange that Marcus seems to be noticeably hovering about her? Could he not trust her since he knows her background or is something else going on? Marcus did seem kind of embarrassed when Derrel suggested he might be attracted to her.
I think Marcus knows something more than he's saying or his likes Angel and is trying to get to know her better than just being the girl he arrested.

14. So heads are missing and a zombie tried to injure or kill Angel to get brains. Could there be a connection or would that be too obvious? He obviously didn't make Angel as he seemed surprised to find she was a newly made zombie. I wonder how many there are out there?
I don't think Zeke is the one who is involved with the missing heads but he is a pain in the butt. I don't understand why he can't get another job so that he can support his own habit. I think the person who did this to Angel has something to do with the missing heads because it so happens that Angel was changed and there was also a missing head at the same time too. I believe that the person who is changing people into Zombies is using the brains to make them the coffee/brain mix drink for the newbies. That was my thought when it came to Angel too.

15. At least Angel now knows what she is. What happened to her not so mentoring mentor? She could have used a little help after her accident. I wonder if she's heard the last from them?
When there's that but I don't see why they didn't give her anything more than just the drink and the notes. I don't think that will be the last of them but they could at least do more or give her some information. She's been doing a good job of keeping herself satisfied and "healthy" I guess.

Yes, it had to be tough on her, growing up with all that and having to deal with her Dad now and his withdrawals too.

***FYI, Sonia and I were curious if the description of Angel in the book matched the cover. Here it is:

"I looked like death without makeup, and while my hair was blonde as well, it was that way because I dyed it myself, which meant it was a frizzy, damaged mess."

I think the cover artist took a little artistic liberty with Angel's appearance, don't you?

Yes, I believe the artist did get artistic with the cover and I think it's great. It gives the cover a kick.

Questions and Comments for Chapters 14-21

17. Kang told us a little about zombies, at least how they are made: 1. Be near death. 2. Get bitten to hell. 3. Eat brains immediately. What do you think of the transformation process?

Well I was thinking about her "hallucination" and I don't think that it was a hallucination but a reality. I think that she was actually dying and then that was when she was changed.

18. What do you think of Kang? Do you think he's a good or bad guy? Will he be a problem?
I don't think Kang is that bad and if he is I think Angel can take care of him and he seems to be the only one giving her answers.

19. Angel handled herself pretty well with Kang. Do you think she should have given in? Or was it good that she stood up for herself?
I think it was great that she stood up for herself and that she bargained with him. It shows that she is not stupid and can take care of herself and also showed Kang that she won't be bullied by him.

20. Did Angel really thinks Zombies would help? She must really know nothing about the typical media zombie.
Well I guess she must have thought that something was better than nothing but she should have known better because the movies are for entertaining than for informational purposes.

21. To me it feels like a lot of vampire traits are being given to zombies in this book: anti-aging, eat brains for strength (blood for vamps), etc. What do you think of this take on zombies?
Well I think it's good for anyone who hasn't read or saw anything that had to do with zombies like Angel, who seems to be lost in the informational area of zombies.

22. Zeke returns. Do you think Angel should help him out? Good guy or bad guy or something in between?
I don't know with him. I seems to be a jerk at times and greedy too.

23. What did you think of the fight with her dad? Do you think she should cut him loose or try to help him?
I thought the fight was pretty sad and it's got to be hard to deal with but with situations like that there is really nothing you can do but let them loose. I think that she can help him too by not bringing him beers and letting him know that if he doesn't get help that she doesn't want anything to do with him and his problems. Also let him know that she is trying to straighten out her life and she can't deal with his abusive ways.

24. What do you think of all these missing brains? Do you think it's Zeke? It's interesting that the brains started going missing once Angel was turned. Coincidence?
I don't think that it's Zeke because he is looking to Angel to get in brains instead of looking healthy he is always starving all the time but I think the zombie that is changing people is the one who is stealing them and leaving it as a starter kit for them.

25. Looks like a budding relationship between Angel and Ivanov. Expected? Do you think Ivanonv reciprocates the feelings?
Well kind of expected it because that boyfriend of hers is kind of a jerk but I don't know if Ivanov is feeling the same or just feeling that she needs a friend.

26. Do you think Angel should have called Kang with her suspicions? Do you think he'll be helpful or just blow her off? I wonder if he's dealt with something like this before since he's so old.
I think she should. He may know something that could help.

27. We're about halfway through the book now. What are your thoughts so far? Predictions for the end?
I think that Angel will be a great help with the matter of the missing heads.

Either that or another zombie is clearing out the field so there's more brains for him/her.

Yeah. It doesn't seem like a good situation. Plus if you're living in a tiny trailer you can't really keep a store of brains around. She needs her own place or to bunk with another zombie. (Though then they might steal the brains.) I wonder if she could move into Zeke's old place :)

30) The watch incident...it made me smile and I liked how touched Angel was by it. She's even been given a nickname--the Angel of Death--by one of her coworkers. Who is your favorite secondary character at this point? I think we're finally starting to get a feel for them all.
I kinda like Marcus the best as a secondary character, though the watch thing was cute. It's almost like an apology for being a jerk before.

Hrm... I suppose if I was going scientific I'd go with, it's a parasite that feeds off brains so if you don't keep it fed then it feeds off yours but that doesn't really explain the healing and the falling apart otherwise. I'm guessing you'd make zombie kids, seems like something that'd be passed on. The Brain Freeze part made me laugh :)

32) Angel mentioned she wondered if her Zombie daddy had been slain. What do you think? He's been awful quiet.
Maybe he wants to make sure she won't try to attack him first... I probably wouldn't be too psyched about being turned into a zombie. But maybe he did it to save her from death. If she would have died otherwise. They do that in a lot of the vampire books where they turn someone as a last resort.

Kelly (ladykatala) | 5020 comments Questions and Comments for Chapters 31 - End

33)Kang's way of storing brains is ingenious. Although it looks like "awful convenient" Angel now has plenty of brains on hand, don't you think?
Eih. I'd imagine if you could you'd store as many as you could. Angel wanted to but didn't have a freezer she could use. I suppose she probably will in the next book since she has Marcus now.

34)As predicted, Randy decided to take advantage of the pills. And the way he accused her of already using them? What a jerk. But, it was the final push that Angel needed to move on. Atta girl.
It's probably best when that type of stuff happens to force people to look realistically at things. But I think she needed the month or so of time before to get to the point she was at.

35)Wait what? Marcus is the zombie who created her and Ed is the zombie slayer? Where did that came from? Did you suspect that?
I suspected Marcus a bit recently. Didn't see Ed as the slayer. I thought it was someone taking out competition. I liked that he picked up the zombies from the cadaver dog though.

36)On the other hand, having a girlfriend with her own zombie detector was a nice touch. Do you think we heard the last of Ed? Will he still be around on the next books?
I'm guessing he'll come back. If not next book then some other future book. People like that tend not to just disappear. I'm guessing either he'll be the main bad guy again or he'll join up with some zombie slayer group.

37)Angel and her father finally had a talk. Maybe cleaning the trash cans was the fist step.
I think it helps to have a clean house. Whenever my house gets dirty it's much easier to let things slide but if it's clean then you want to keep it clean.

38)Tapioca pudding? Yuck. Is it me, or this book gravitates around food?
Really gross food too. I suppose a zombie lives around eating brains so I suppose it makes sense. The Argeneau Family series by Lynsay Sands has vampires in it and have blood bar's where they have sweet tooth drinks which is blood from diabetics and such. (This is the series that I keep thinking of as a vampire parallel to this book.) I think it helps establish the "humanity" in the monsters.

39)Final thoughts? How did you rate it. Will you continue with the series? Is it good enough to have its own spot on own Feature Series Read folder?
I rated it a 4. I'd like to continue the series even though I'm not a big fan of zombies in general. I haven't done a Feature Series Read so I'm not sure I'd participate. I have enough trouble scheduling things :)

Well, we do have series without a reading schedule, like The Dresden Files were each of the participants read at their own pace, just adding their 2 cents about the book they are currently reading.

Since this one has only 3 books at the moment - book #4 is schedule to July - I see no problem on doing that, as long as we keep spoilers under spoiler tags, it functions perfectly.

I thought that the doctor was right. I think this has something to do with something that personally happened to someone that is looking for revenge and that is where the zombie slayer comes in.

I thought that was a bad idea since he is into drugs and of course he is thinking of a way to get his hands on it by the way he found interest in that subject but nothing else that she had to say.

30) The watch incident...it made me smile and I liked how touched Angel was by it. She's even been given a nickname--the Angel of Death--by one of her coworkers. Who is your favorite secondary character at this point? I think we're finally starting to get a feel for them all.
I really love Derrel because he is so nice and good to her and he is such a good friend to her too and that is what she needs, people who care for her and look out for her best interest.

I guess being dead doesn't change because you walk around like everyone else. You'll also have a certain odor to you especially to a dog with a keen sense of smell.

32) Angel mentioned she wondered if her Zombie daddy had been slain. What do you think? He's been awful quiet.
I don't think that he's dead but near enough to know what she is doing. So he doesn't feel the need to do anything or say anything.

Questions and Comments for Chapters 31 - End

33)Kang's way of storing brains is ingenious. Although it looks like "awful convenient" Angel now has plenty of brains on hand, don't you think?
Kang's a dealer of brains so I'm guessing that's why he has a convenient supply and she does have a big supply now but I'm thinking that she needed it because of what her father a had done to her stash.

34)As predicted, Randy decided to take advantage of the pills. And the way he accused her of already using them? What a jerk. But, it was the final push that Angel needed to move on. Atta girl.
I was so proud of her. She showed him that she was not as weak as he thought she was and I'm glad she dumped his ass. He didn't care about her at all.

35)Wait what? Marcus is the zombie who created her and Ed is the zombie slayer? Where did that came from? Did you suspect that?
I only suspected that Marcus had something to do with her being a zombie but Ed I didn't think that was going to happen but then again that's what makes it a good book, when you don't suspect the actual person who is doing the crime.

36)On the other hand, having a girlfriend with her own zombie detector was a nice touch. Do you think we heard the last of Ed? Will he still be around on the next books?
I don't think so but I will see because I will continue the next book to see what happens with Marcus and Angel.

37)Angel and her father finally had a talk. Maybe cleaning the trash cans was the fist step.
I'm glad that they talked their issue out and hopefully become closer now and be a family. I felt bad for her dad but I was glad that he realized that he was wrong in the way he's acted and treated her. It wasn't her fault the way things went with her mother. He made that choice.

38)Tapioca pudding? Yuck. Is it me, or this book gravitates around food?
Yeah it does but that was a good thing. It made them seem a little human instead of just being all around gross but I'm not a tapioca person either.

39)Final thoughts? How did you rate it. Will you continue with the series? Is it good enough to have its own spot on own Feature Series Read folder?
I really liked the characters and the story. It made you think and try to guess who was behind all the beheadings and why but it showed you that a person can change if they wanted to. I think this book belongs in the Feature Series Read folder and I rate it a 4 and currently waiting for my library to get the 2nd book. :)
I'm glad I caught up. I really enjoyed this book.
