There is a young woman, who is a companion to an old lady who is quite high up in Society and socialises with President Grant, who is mentioned and appears in the book.
The niece (possibly nephew?) of the young woman is Kidnapped by her criminal Brother in law, after her sister died. He will not let her know where the child is, and demands that she start stealing jewellery, ornaments etc while she accompanies the Old Lady she works for to various social events.
She does this very reluctantly.
After awhile this is noticed, that stuff keeps going missing from various houses and they bring a Man in to investigate.
The man and the young woman end up falling in love, and they end up getting married...although she is too scared to tell him what is happening and that she is an Aunt.
In the end it is all found out, and her husband helps her, and it turns out the young lady had kept a list of what she had stole and from where and managed to sneak most of it back to the rightful owners.
