Failed States by Chomsky. Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx. Read the Economist magazine every week. Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot, The Truth (with jokes), And Lying Liars And The Liars Who Tell Them by Al Franken. Animal Farm, Catalina Homage, and 1984 by George Orwell.
I should warn you though, if you still want to vote Republican, don't read any of those. The truth tends to be very liberal leaning...sorry.
I can honestly say that the most life-changing book for me in my adult years has been The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark by Carl Sagan. It includes an indispensable tool called the Baloney Detection Kit. Guaranteed to reduce gullibility by at least 3/4ths (results much higher if you go in with an open mind).
I also recommend Joseph Heller's Catch-22, just because it's one of the best books of the 20th century.
Before you go out and buy the recommended books, check Feedbooks for some classics that you can download for FREE.http://www.feedbooks.com/
Still probably not what someone who is just trying to learn the basis of political theory and social issues needs to read.
No, I think she is probably a great writer, by all means, I'm a fan, but I don't think he will get any great benefit from reading her books at this juncture.
Oh, okay, true. He's read about the same amount of political books as I have, well, possibly more, since he's older. Thank you, I'm happy when there are no arguements! :)
Message from D.C. on 4/24/2009: It would be very simple just send an invite to all 2000 friends of yours. You know for Thoughts and Opinions? *
From me, the following day:
Hello D.C.,
Kudos. A group dedicated to freedom of speech and the ability to think is great. I have posted an invite to visit Thoughts and Opinions in my groups:

I hope to have young readers for my books, Reason Reigns and Royal Serf - I have many young characters. Is it okay if I post excerpts from my books?
Best regards.

Reply from D.C. on the same day: "Thanks you so much Ilyn. Yes thats fine if you post excerpts, in fact I'm pretty interested in Reason Reigns myself"
I'll talk to him later to deal with this. Try not to post so much that you take over the topic though, please.
Whoa Ilyn why are you leaving this group? And Davis like I said before I have no interest is just voting Republican. If a Republican or Democrate is better for a position then i will choose either. I think Democrates have great ideas as well as Republicans. not everything is so black and white.
Ilyn you can post you stuff. Marls I told him he could. Here I'll give you your own topic Ilyn

No it's fine Marls, it's true no one should spam, and I had forgotten my promise to Ilyn(mainly because you never came around Ilyn). So don't worry I'll figure it out
"And Davis like I said before I have no interest is just voting Republican. If a Republican or Democrate is better for a position then i will choose either. I think Democrates have great ideas as well as Republicans. not everything is so black and white."And what great ideas have surfaced from the Republicans?
here's a couple:Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media, Edward Herman & Noam Chomsky
No Logo, Naomi Klein
The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism, Naomi Klein
A People's History of the United States: 1942-Present, Howard Zinn
Cadillac Desert: The American West and Its Disapearing Water, Marc Reisner --> a must read, in my opinion
Stolen Harvest: The Hijaking of the Global Food Supply, Vandana Shiva
Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability, and Peace, Vandana Shiva
Water Wars: Privitization, Pollution, and Profit, Vandana Shiva
Biopiracy: The Plunder of Nature and Knowledge, Vanadana Shiva
The Human Potential for Peace: A Anthropological Challenge to the Assumptions about War and Violence, Douglas Fry
Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time, Greg Mortenson
Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things, William McDonough & Michael Braungart
Most recently, I'd say Naomi Wolf's The End of America, anything by Emma Goldmann, and The People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn...
millennia wrote: "I find Greek Myths very enlightening, though I can't name an exact book."
Mythology by Edith Hamilton was what I read. I can't seem to find any books on Irish mythology or Native American mythology or Egyptian mythology or...Well, you get my point. Everybody's reading Greek myths but I'm tired of them. I want stuff from other cultures
I keep re-reading 'Chocolate' by Joanne Harris and the 'Tomorrow Series' by John Marsden...and 'Pride and Prejudice'...and Harry Potter of course!Isn't it weird how you never get sick of your favorite books.
Don't be left in the dark about social issues and views, DC. However the real trick is to know what Truths to be reading. Our time is valuable, no need to wast our time with horrible junk. Here's a good read
"SEEING THE LIBERTY, The Journey of Eves Daughter"
http://www.amazon.com/SEEING-LIBERTY-...
I was deeply involved in some things of our world in the late 90's early 00's. Wrote a fictionalized account of that time - and though the character's are composites, one would have to say this was contemporary/historical fiction. Truth? You be the judge. I presented it as accurately as possible - first person - psychological. Read: A Terrace on the Tower of Babel.
