That's great, Paul! Thanks for sharing. I'll download it, but wow is it huge. Still, can't say no to free. :)

I had to change my e-mail preferences from daily to weekly. Getting a daily e-mail was just too much temptation for me!

I had to purchase a new kindle. I had so many books on the first one.
I'm on five or six free-book mailing lists. I think this "book thing" is getting out of hand...Is it though? Naaaahhhhh.....
My "books to read" shelf is just so out of control, it's almost stressing me out at this point. It's almost 900 books!!
I was so excited in January because it was down to 826. I thought I might actually get it below 800. And I have, coincidentally, read 26 books so far this year. But my number is now 870. That means I have added 70 books just in the last few months! And BookBub is the main culprit. Well, the real problem is that I have no self control, but it's easier to point a finger at BookBub :)
This year, I think I'm at 32 or 33.My eyes are bigger than my belly (which, if you know me, you realize is very big indeed!)...
You think 900 is bad? Try over 1500. ;D (EDIT: OK, OK, Andrew wins. 1500 is much less than 3316, wow. o.0) A lot of that depends on my library and some lists I'm no longer interested in though, so come the summer I expect I'll be whittling it down fairly considerably. Then again if/when I find a new library it'll probably go up again, so who knows. ^^EDIT: I used to dip into ereaderiq.com for cheap/free books every now and then, but I stopped after I realised I probably shouldn't. I mean, I buy too many books as it is anyway, so I was better off removing an outlet for that than keeping it, even if it means I might have to pay more on occasion.
Also, I'm on 51 for the year so far.
Wow, Paul, 51 already, that's impressive!!!I have trouble whittling my list down. I end up buying the books I want to read and then feel like since I spent money on them, I need to actually read them. I think it will be easier for me to just give up on a book if it's a Kindle book, since I rarely spend more than $3 for Kindle books. Usually I get free ones or spend a dollar or two.
That's amazing, Paul! I'm falling behind on my challenge with the end of the quarter for university, but I'm hoping to catch up over spring break.
I'm actually ahead on my challenge, but need to make progress in the TBR group I'm in. I usually read more in the summer since I don't watch as much TV then, so hopefully my numbers will be even better then. I should be doing other things with the summer months, like working on my yard, but reading is usually my first priority if I have free time!
51 already is so impressive! I am behind on my challenge too but between work and moving, I got sidetracked. Time to step it back up!
And I was thinking I have a problem accumulating books... I do not even put all the books I now have in my TBR because I feel guilty... and that is way less than the numbers that have 4 digits.... Bookclub and Booksliced are terrible, new alerts, sometimes they are so cheap, besides I also order in bookdepository... Besides that each time that I travel I MUST buy at least one book in the airport (never mind that my Kindle is full of books to read) ... I had promise myself to spend one month without buying a single book. So far that does not happen... At the office the rest of the people does not have my bookish obsession so if I say that I got a new book they say "you don't have too many books?" Does any of you can say that have too many books? Is that a real thing? To have too many books?
Thank you all!Generally I don't spend more than two pounds on a Kindle book either, sometimes not even that much, and only when they're on sale too. I'm usually good at not buying something if I can get it in my library instead though, or if it's not something I want that badly. There've been more than a few books I've bought that weren't even on my shelves either, they just appealed to me that much. It's a real problem, I know. I can't say that I'm too worried about my challenges either. I feel way ahead on practically everything, which makes sense as I make a point of making time at night and on buses too and from college to read.
Caro, in my opinion no, I can't have too many books. Unless and until my house is so bad that I can no longer see the floor, I'll keep adding to my collection. :)
Caro wrote: "And I was thinking I have a problem accumulating books... And since we had our credit card number stolen, he's been getting alerts sent to his phone whenever there's a transaction. So...he's more aware, now, of all the ebooks I buy. I'm actually thinking I may have reached a point where I may have too many books- there is no more wall space for bookshelves and I'm now reduced to stacking and shoving things into boxes.
I concur about not putting all the books I own on my TBR (in fact, not even close). My TBR is, I'd say, mostly books that I DON'T yet own. I use it to keep track of books I hear about that seem interesting and I don't want to forget. Maybe I'll create a "books I own" shelf and add everything on there, physical and kindle (or a shelf for each?), and see what those counts are. Then again, that sounds kinda time-consuming...
I finally made myself an owned-but-unread shelf, but that's because my focus this year is to try to power through those books. I'd say, unless you want to track them for a specific reason, it's sort of terrifying to see the number in print.

It would kind of prove my husband right if I knew exactly. (He thinks I should stop buying books until I've read, say, half the pile and 2 book cases full of unread books.)
Haha..."terrifying"...not to mention I'm not so sure I want the world to see some of the really dumb free Kindle books I have obtained!
I do have a "books I own" shelf. It's a little over 1,100. But I know that's not all of them. When I joined Goodreads I didn't have time to add all the books I owned at that time, but I have added anything I have bought since I joined. I'm now trying to create a shelf for books I have bought just since January 1. Maybe that will help me if I see how many I bought just in the last two months. Also, for the TBR challenge I'm doing I can only use TBR's that I purchased prior to 2016, so I want to separate out those TBRs.
That's true! I have quite a few books that I'm sort of ashamed of that I got for free or very cheap. Plus, my book-choosing skills have gotten better over the years, so some of the older books I have are probably not as good. I'm giving myself permission to give up on a book more easily than I usually do to make up for that.
Andrew wrote: "Haha..."terrifying"...not to mention I'm not so sure I want the world to see some of the really dumb free Kindle books I have obtained!"I think we've all downloaded dumb books just because they were free. I mean, I've gotten some and I know as I'm clicking that the odds of me ever, ever, ever reading it were zero.
Ehh, I'm not ashamed of anything really. I read a lot of cozy mysteries and some of them are pretty ridiculous. They're fun to read in between reading more serious books.
Catherine wrote: "Ehh, I'm not ashamed of anything really. I read a lot of cozy mysteries and some of them are pretty ridiculous. They're fun to read in between reading more serious books."Sometimes it's fun to read light or even "fluffy" reading for a break.
I have a very open taste on books, only erotic books I do not like, besides I pass over almost all books... I am even trying to give a try to poetry and once in a while I find things I do like (for some reason poetry is not my thing). Now I am trying to clean my bookshelfs of physical books, I now donate them and even give some books that to be honest I know I will never read. But the temptation of a good cheap ebook sometimes is too much for me...

Luckily, I tend to read mostly e-books anymore and if not, the only ones that actually get kept are gifts from people and special books. Otherwise, my local library gets them.

That's exactly it :)
I'm taking the dive, because I don't have enough unnecessary projects to do :) I made three shelves: own-print, own-electronic, and own-audio. And I'll take the next few months to slowly add everything to them. I've been adopting the attitude of, "once I've read it, it goes out the door" like some of you. With exceptions, certainly!
Nice, Andrew! Goodreads is the best procrastination tool.I'm pretty ruthless when it comes to getting rid of books I've already read. I don't have much space, so if a book doesn't completely wow me, I donate it. When the shelf gets full, I go through them again.
Traci wrote: "Does anyone have a little lending library?"The mobile home park in which I live has one. I imagine I will take some there.
(Is that what you meant?)
Bella, 13,000 physical books is impressive! I wish I had so many, but then I wouldn't have enough room for them in my small flat, plus I keep moving around so it's impossible until I finally manage to stay put in one place.
A benefit of entering these books into GoodReads is that I'm really thinking about each book, and I've started a pile of books to pass on. Am I ever going to read the complete poetry of Yeats? No, is the answer. The other two categories of my physical books are those which I have and want to read and probably won't keep after that, and those which I will keep because they are so damn good, or were special gifts.
Traci wrote: "Does anyone have a little lending library?"To a certain extent I do. Family, my boyfriend, and probably 2-3 friends have borrowing privileges. If I have it, it's theirs to read, but I'm a little ruthless about it. The first time they mess up or lose one of my books, they're no longer allowed to borrow them.

I think Traci might mean the Little Free Libraries:
http://littlefreelibrary.org/
I loan books out to a select group of people, and only if I know they'll read them and get them back to me within a month or two. I've learned there's no point loaning to someone who doesn't normally read books. They'll either never give it back or they'll give it back a year later unread. I used to try to force my favorite books on people ("Come on, you'll love it!") but I don't usually bother anymore.I did have someone tell me just yesterday that I have the best taste in books than anyone else they'd ever met, so that was a great compliment!

Yes. I would love to start one in my community. I have boxes and boxes of books saved for one.

I keep a list on my goodreads shelf of the books I lend out to people. Just so that I can get them back.

Yes, that is exactly what I am taking about. Thank you for the website :)

Oooh! I wasn't even aware of these and apparently one of the elementary schools around here has one. That's kind of a cool idea. Thanks for the website. :)
There are a few of these in my neighborhood. There used to be one about half a block from my house, but the woman moved away and her house still hasn't sold so the library isn't there anymore. I need to find out the closest one to me so I can donate to it.

I also leave books at the hospital, clinic and dental offices that my family and I go to so others can also read them.
