Bobbi (schadenfreudian) | 628 comments Thank you, Caro. I stopped counting a long time ago. At last count (5 or so years ago) I had over 350 not including Kindle books and yet oddly, never anything to read just as you said, haha!

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments Had someone change from Kindle paperwhite to voyage recently? My paperwhite starts to be quite slow in the response and I am wondering how big is the change....

Lianne (liannevanroekel) | 245 comments Hi everyone! I've been neglecting this group for a long, long time (2 years I think?). But I was scrolling through 2016's yearly challenges and I couldn't wait to participate. So here I am, back after what seems like an eternity! How are you all?

Doing well! So glad that you are back! How's your life been?

I have Caro :) I bought it mainly for the weight. It is lighter. Do you have the newest paperwhite? Do you have many books on it ? All those things matter. The newest paperwhite is great, it's the same resolution as Voyage and cheaper. I recommend that if you don't have a particular reason for the Voyage. I don't use the auto-lightning, I seldom use page press, but I like that.

Thanks Megan! It feels good to be back. I read so much more when I'm active in this group.

My life has been a roller coaster ride! I quit my job, found a new job, bought a house, moved in with my boyfriend, travelled outside Europe for the first time. So much happened! I don't mind if 2016 is a little bit less eventful ;)

freely_Bee (branigansbooks) I wasn't sure where to put this(i can take it down if there is an appropriate post to put it on) but...
What is everyone's thoughts on Pride, Prejudice and Zombies??
I usually can't read zombie books or watch movies about them but i would like to read the book to get an idea what the movie will be like! I cant decide if I will enjoy the book or if i will have such bad anxiety about the zombie thing (zombies are like a phobia of mine lol)?

I knew if I had any questions over a book it would be to post it on this group:)

message 708: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments I have not read the book, but I really want to see the movie. I'm not a zombie fan, but I'm not phobic either. I can handle them, but they aren't my thing. I used to watch "Walking Dead" and had to stop because it was so depressing.

I had read the book. Yes they they describe quite a lot the zombies but is not like in a horror film. I read the book a couple of years ago ( I may reread it before the movie) the book is part Pride and Prejudice (that is one of my favorite books EVER ) and part zoombies so some of the characters change and the endings also... It made me laugh a lot... But I am a person that love monsters and all that stuff.. I watched Nightmare in Elm Street at 8 and found it fascinating.... They describe quite well the fights so no sure....

I have a paperwhite 2 that love it with all my heart but now is not so responsive and the pages takes ages to pass... Since I have some savings I was thinking in the voyage, also I am a sucker (sorry for the strong expression but I do not have a better one) for new technology and is a long time I do not buy a new gadget....So I guess I may ended buying that one. Just wanted to know if someone had use paperwhite 2 and Voyage...

I have used both and was happy with both, but my arm liked the lighter weight. The paperwhite 2 came first with one version and then I think last year with a new one. The first one had worse resolution, but the last one is great. Really both are good devices.

I would recommend Voyage to:

- You just love the newest technology
- You miss buttons
- You want the lighter one

I hope that helps a bit Caro :)

For Linda and all of you who are worry with the emails... I follow the Goodreads Feedback group (Is very useful specially if you want to troubleshoot some things by your own) and I found the following threat:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Basically is a general issue in GR but they are working on it, so hopefully everybody will start to get their daily digest and alerts....
Hope it helps!

I am now following the threat so if I have any update of when this is fixed I will posted here.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments So happy that the two movies that won Golden Globes last night were based on books! The Martian for comedy (not sure why it was classified that way) and The Revenant for drama. And Wolf Hall won for best TV series drama. So great!

message 714: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments I agree, Megan! I haven't seen The Revenant yet, but I loved The Martian and Wolf Hall (both the books and the movies). I'm really hoping Leonardo wins the Oscar this year.

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments This weekend is the 24in48 hours Readathon... Has any of you participate before? I will try to give it a shot... Not sure if I manage to read 24 hours (the good thing is that is not 24 hrs straight and breaks are allow) But I found it as a good motivation to finish some of my challenge.

I didn't have the opportunity this time, but I hope to participate in Dewey's in April :) quite exited for it actually!

message 718: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments Oh this one I am using as preparation to the Dewey's... I will see how long I can keep it... Food is ready, energy drinks are in the freezer and I will have a nice night to sleep to be ready...

message 719: by Fr. Andrew (new)

Fr. Andrew (nitesead) RE: 24in48....
Oh wow...that sounds fun and immersive and possibly exhausting. What is Dewey's? Is that another group?

message 720: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments Andrew the link for 24 in 48 is http://24in48.com/ The main goal is to read 24 hours of this 48 hours weekend you can stop when you feel the need and go to sleep when you get tired... It does not seem as challenging as the Dewey that is 24 hour straight. That one is the 23 of April. The link is http://www.24hourreadathon.com/ and they do have a Goodreads group to motivate you during that time.

Stefani - SpelingExpirt (speling_expirt) | 585 comments I'm annoyed that I'm working all weekend so can't do the 24 in 48. I'm also working for the Dewey one :'(

message 722: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments Normally I would be all over that reading challenge, but I'm actually hoping to go to a few movies this weekend. Some of the Oscar nominated movies just got here and sometimes the lesser known ones only come here for a week or two and then are gone. I'm still hoping to get a lot of reading done too, but don't think I'll make that 24 hours!

message 723: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments That would be great, but for the fact that my parents are visiting this weekend. It would be a tad rude to ignore them for 24 hours to read:)

message 724: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments LOL Megan. Yes it would. At least you get to see Leo on Monday. Let me know how you like it!

So I won't be the only one from here on Dewey's, yay ^^ I am going to be looking for good Dewey-books in Oslo in late January, so I'm kind of exited yes ^^

Alisia, I use Bookmooch. It's not the best there is, in my opinion, as from time to time things just won't work, but it's basically the only book swapping site available to people in Europe - at least as far as I know. There should be more good ones in the US. Where are you based?

Ariel (lamot_amant) | 728 comments Same here, I'm sure I'll have a stack beside me because it'll be too hard to choose lol.

I'm interested in finding a good book swapping site as well but I haven't looked into it very much.

message 732: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5010 comments Hm I don't think we even have bookswapping in Norway ^^

I want books that grabs me and at least some short ones:)

message 733: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments I used to use Paperback Swap, but it's changed so much I haven't used it at all lately. It used to be a lot easier to use. I'm on a Facebook page called Buy Sell Trade Cozy Mysteries -- I use that sometimes, but mostly I buy used books on Amazon. I am really bad about not getting rid of books! I need to do more trading and less buying :)

message 734: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (lamot_amant) | 728 comments I've signed up for Paperback Swap and requested a copy of Swan's Way for my first book to check things out/how fast it is/etc..

The site does seem a bit outdated but it seems to have pretty good traffic.

message 735: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments Paperback Swap used to be just straight-up swapping with no fees. You had to pay the shipping for books you shipped out, but then you got a credit for a completely free book. I think now they charge fees. I haven't used it in a while.

message 736: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (lamot_amant) | 728 comments Huh, I def need to look more into it. I haven't seen fees as of yet. I got a free credit for putting up some books on my account. Once I requested the book it just gave me a message saying that I would get an email when the book shipped.

So I've probably missed it somewhere or the fees kick in after that first book maybe.

I'm sure there have to be other sites that are a bit more up to date that I'm not aware of. *googles*

message 737: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments I'm sure they would have asked you for a credit card number if they were going to charge you anything, so you're probably safe!

message 738: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (lamot_amant) | 728 comments Yeah, I think you're right.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments FYI, saw the Revenant today - it was so brilliant and raw! Leo must win an Oscar for his role. The other performances were excellent as well. It's difficult to watch in parts but so well done!

Saw the movie as well and loved it. Looking forward to reading the book.

message 742: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments The movie is not coming here till the end of the month. I will watched and then the book, if not it will happen as always will not enjoy the movie and compare it all the time with the book. Like it happens to me everytime that I did that. I watched The Shining and enjoyed a lot and then read the book. enjoy both of them.... But to be fair the book and the movie are quite different, besides the fact that the movie is based in the book. But perhaps that is why I enjoy both of them...

Zara's Corner | 2365 comments Hi everyone and welcome to all our wonderful new members it's great to have you here with us.

I've been busy with study and last week I was busy being concerned for my husband who went in for day surgery to have a hernia fixed. The op went well and he's well on the way to recovery. It was in his stomach which has already slimmed down significantly since the procedure was done. I also felt vindicated when the result of tests done before the op indicated that he did indeed have a hernia because I'd been saying that for months!

Western Australia has also suffered severe bushfires in the last couple of weeks with one particularly bad bushfire totally destroying a country town in the South West of WA called Yarloop (here's a link to information about the town as it was: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yarloop...). We have been encouraged though by the support of so many people who are helping to get this place, and its people, back on their feet.

This is an article that shows up when you type in 'Yarloop' in Google - http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-19...

One thing that never ceases to amaze me with country people particularly is their sheer resilience and determination to pick themselves, and their community, up to start all over again!!

Glad that everything is getting right on track again for you... Too bad that you did not had the relaxing Holidays but in another I am glad that all is getting back in track for you.

Here we did not here about the fire in Australia... Poland now is having a lot of Political problems and the main focus here is what the new goverment will do. Is sad to see how little we know from the other side of the world....

I know somethings of Australia but mainly by my own interest I have hear some history podcast about the colonization and the problems with the indians. Not nice I must say....

Sometimes I try to search more about other countries (that is why I also want to read at least fiction from diverse authors) but I most say that most of the time I do not do a great job about it. Your post help me to see a bit more than the typical small bubble I tend to be..
