Casey (grizzly_bear) So has anyone started reading this yet? I have read the first three chapters and I am hooked! Ready to discuss. Will we divide into sections? I don't want to ruin this for anybody.

I started today. Ive read it before but missed a majority of the details.

Cassie's character? Thoughts?

Tiffany-Rae Lowe (thetiff10) | 87 comments I am actually reading this book for a few challenges so I will join as well since other people are reading it. I am on chapter 7 right now and so far I have mixed feelings.

Alissa I have the audio version of this book so I listened to a good chunk of this today while painting my kitchen. I think I'm on chapter 19. I like how the story is developing. One of my biggest pet peeves is when a book is poorly researched. I don't mind if a story is far fetched it just needs to be plausible. So far on that affront I have no complaints. I really like Cassie, she's not whiny and annoying - she's also not over the top "the world has ended and now I've turned into this badass over night". Her transformation has stages and she is what I imagine a typical teenage girl would be like. Although, at that age, I would not have survived who am I kidding at my age I still wouldn't be able to survive!

Looking forward to hearing your perspectives!

Honestly? I enjoy reading things from Cassie's view more than a lot of characters in books I've read before. She's driven, caring, and intelligent and I feel very few characters are created like her. A lot of characters are annoying (there are some in this book) but for the majority of the book I didn't get irritated with her or tired of her endless sarcasm. Regardless, she did have some moments when I wished I could've smacked her. She has a really wicked sense of humor and she's witty and I love her.

Alissa I'm on chapter 30 and its been a real struggle these past few chapters. The shift in story line has me beginning to lose interest. The change in voice was too abrupt...who is this guy? Why should I care about him? And how does this fit together? No need to answer those questions its just my thoughts. Anyone else having issues?

Has anyone finished yet? I finished less than 30 minuted ago. It was better the second time around when I took more time to get all of the smaller details I missed the first time I read it.

Tiffany-Rae Lowe (thetiff10) | 87 comments Yes I finished a few days ago. Was just waiting for someone else to be done.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

I've been busy finishing a few other books and I'm glad I got to finish today. what did you think?

Casey (grizzly_bear) On chapter 13 trying to catch up. Just finished NOS4A2 by Joe Hill. So far I like the book. I am not one who enjoys YA fiction such as this but the mechanics of the Others keeps me intrigued. I hope though that it picks up a little.

Brian (brianfinn) | 638 comments I had never heard of this book but was writing a paper at the library and procrastinating looking at our current Buddy Reads. Then I checked the library catalog and they had several copies, so I just checked it out an hour ago!

I may not be able to get to the book this month, but I look forward to reading all your guys' comments once I do read it! And I'll add what I think if you're interested :]

Tiffany-Rae Lowe (thetiff10) | 87 comments I enjoyed this book. I only gave it 4 stars though I think. I think the transitioning from person to person was very difficult to understand at first. When the second part started I was like wait, what just happened. I thought the story line was pretty neat though. The one thing I did not like at all was the ending. I am the type of person who liked things tied up into neat little bows at the end and that really wasn't there for me. I thought there should have been more. Oh well. Decent book. Rick is an awesome guy though. He is very funny. If you ever get a chance to meet him, take it.

Casey (grizzly_bear) 47 percent done! I agree with everyone else. The transition from different points of view was confusing at first but once I got it it was not so bad. The book so far is definitely worthy of reading.

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Is this one long? I just finished The Eye of the World and I need to start The Goldfinch (both of which are SUPER long books). I know it's long by page numbers, but I'm hoping it's a quick read.

Casey (grizzly_bear) If you have the time Kara, it can be read quickly. It is a page turner

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments I finished my other audio book, so will get started on the 5th wave sometime today! (Kara, the audio version is something less than 13 hrs, so I'm guessing it makes a pretty quick read)

Tiffany-Rae Lowe (thetiff10) | 87 comments Kara, for me most of the book was a quick read. There was like a section that took me forever to get through but I think you'll be fine.

message 30: by Brian (last edited Jan 30, 2014 01:46PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Brian (brianfinn) | 638 comments This was a really quick read for me - I finished it in a few hours. I agree with Tiffany-Rae about the shift in perspective being confusing. It took me a couple of pages to even realize we had switched from her to someone new...I was like "wait, since when does Cassie have a sister??!"

I don't mind shifts in perspective when they're done well....but, when they're done well, I generally know right away when it's happening. So I think maybe the author should have put himself more into developing the other characters before writing from their perspective.

Otherwise, it was definitely a page turner, and I enjoyed finding out more about The Others, and finally finding out what The 5th Wave actually is was quite satisfying. I also agree with Tiffany-Rae about the ending not being great...I thought the ending was very awkward and abrupt, which leads me to believe there is probably a sequel forthcoming?

It is part of a series- not sure how many books but if I had guess I would say its a triology cause thats the in thing to do nowadays! Next book doesn't come out till September. I wish I realized that beforehand. I don't like starting a series until its finished. Overall, I did enjoy it

You're correct Alissa about it being a trilogy. The third book, which is still untitled, is due for release in August 2015

Okay, that makes a lot more sense! Thanks guys.
