Bill | 192 comments Big snowstorm headed this way tomorrow night, so I'll have to squeeze in a library stop before then. I do have a short stories collection to read. A Visit to Priapus and Other Stories by Glenway Wescott

Appetite for America How Visionary Businessman Fred Harvey Built a Railroad Hospitality Empire That Civilized the Wild West by Stephen Fried

Finished yesterday. Very enjoyable and great view of the early 20th century through food, transportation, and travel. Fred and Ford Harvey were very respectable men and wished there were more like them in business today.

I'm going to give the J.K. Rowling non-Harry Potter book a try. The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling My mom gave up on the book so I'm a little concerned but will still give reading it a try.

I'm now reading It Happened in Kansas: Remarkable Events that Shaped History for the Kansas Humanities Book Club. It looks like an interesting but easy read, so that will only leave me two assigned books to read for next month. If my reading keeps up I will be able to get some out for the Little Free Libraries.

Bill | 192 comments I entered a Giveaway here a few months ago for Christopher Isherwood's "Down There on a Visit". I was surprised when I won to receive not only that title but two others by him; "A Single Man" which I had read prior to the contest, and The Memorial Portrait of a Family by Christopher Isherwood , which I will finally start now.

To me it was one of the best things I've read in a very long time, and I read it a few years ago. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I was not a fan of The Kite Runner. Okay, I was really enjoying it up until the end. I got so frustrated with the main character. He had the opportunity to become the man I think he wanted to be and heal from the past, but he failed. I felt like I went though this journey only be told it didn't matter.

Just finished The Accidental Bachelorand it was okay, but more of a guy's book. It was a free Kindle download. I'm currently reading My Cheeky Angelon my phone. It was a free Kindle download. Just started, but it is a very light read. For the Humantities book discussion I'm also reading It Happened in Kansas: Remarkable Events that Shaped History. Very short chapters about things that happened in the state I call home. It is interesting.

Finished Across Eternity which was a free Kindle download. I had such hope for a couple that reincarnates and finds each other in every lifetime. But only he could remember their past, and he dies only a few months after finding her. I would have loved for them to have talked about their previous lives, rather than instantly falling in love. Okay, maybe I am a skeptic.

April Smith | 40 comments I am reading Gone Girl. I hope it turns out good. It's a big oddly written, unlike anything I have read before.

Started reading The Golem and the Jinni and so far so good.

I managed to finish The Casual Vacancy but it was a painful read.

Bill | 192 comments Earlier this month I read Glenway Wescott's A Visit to Priapus and Other Stories. It was mentioned in the Introduction that while living in Paris he travelled in a circle with other American expats; Gertrude Stein, the FitzGeralds, and was acquainted with Hemingway. In fact he appears as a minor character in Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, which I recall reading in college and enjoying. Going to give it a reread.

For something on the quick side I picked up Stephen King's The Green Mile. I didn't realize that it is 6 short stories. I will say it was a bit awkward when I switch from Two Dead Girls to Mouse on the Mile, but many times "Parts" will be titled.

Bill | 192 comments I caught an interview on NPR with a member of the Russian punk rock group Pussy Riot following her release from prison where she'd been held on charges of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred". This coupled with the increasingly dire situation in Russia for anyone who thinks differently from what the state deems normal reminded me of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn . I hope to finish this before the start of the Olympics in Sochi.
