Thanks Terri. I sure am. I'm betting I'll catch it on an SBS one day.
I have been watching a documentary called Ancient Worlds: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00w0bl0I'm finding it a little basic when it comes to history but it's exploring the start of civilization and can be interesting.
For those in the UK, there was a very interesting doc on BBC4 about a 4000 year old body found recently in an Irish bog. You can "watch again" here:http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03js0gf
For those who are a fan of Neil Oliver documentaries. This new one may be coming to a tv near you. It is based on our Australian War Memorial, so I dare say it won't play around the world for a while. Oh, that looks interesting. We'll probably have to wait until summer to get it here on TVO. (I don't know if PBS also shows this). I've seen there other ones; have to say, I'm waiting for Tom Pinfold to grow on me; I prefer Alex Langlands as the third presenter.
Sounds like something Nova would present. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

I've seen that, it's interesting, but I'm over the whole idea that all sites and finds are 'ritualistic'. I hope people thousands of years from now don't look at our crap and think it's all religious or ritualistic.

Tell your wife I said thank you. I've been to some of those places way back in the late 80's before the chunnel was built. Never could get used to the traffic on the left side, made it even hard to cross the street, felt like a little kid going to grade school again. :)

Ken Burns does great documentaries. I own his Jazz one I thought it was so good.
When he was publizing his series on the National Parks, he came to one of the local High Schools and gave a presentation - about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. My wife got us tickets. He doesn't look as young in person as on TV - must be the makeup :)Very interesting and a good speaker. I loved his comment about Bryce Canyon National Park - One of the early Mormon ranchers in the area described as "... a hell of a place to lose a cow!"

Seconded. I can't find half of the stuff you guys talk about on my cable channels or on Netflix USA or Canada. I have to upgrade to a package that costs $75 more a month just to get the INDIE and BBC channels. Grrrr.
$75 is a bit much, I do pay an extra $4 for BBC Canada, even though it's filled with Mike Holmes for some odd reason. KCTS9 (Public Television) is really good about showing British shows and Vision TV plays some good stuff too.

Are you with Telus or Shaw? We have Telus and we don't get *insert curse word of choice here* for channels.

The bbc has brought back time commanders, which pc games technology to recreate historical battles.Starts next Monday on bbc4 at 8pm.
might not be to everyone tastes.

I've finished watching a couple documentaries on the History channel. Two Neil Oliver docos which are, as is expected, high quality and fascinating.
One was a three part doco on the Celts.

I couldn't wait for each episode of these docos to air each week. Two of the most enjoyable docos I have seen for a long while.
Also been watching Digging for Britain. Which is also very good, but not as good as a Neil Oliver Doco.

Meant to say. In that Celt doco they had Boudicas daughters being raped. I thought there was modern opinion among historians that this may not have happened. That they did not rape the daughters.I find that sometimes Docos, including Neil Oliver ones as he is a dramatic Scot, prefer the dramatic versions if the dramatic versions are not yet disproved.

*snorts* It was a typical Roman tactic. These are the people who raped Sejanus' daughter before strangling her because virgins couldn't be executed. She was still a child by Roman law.
There could be no better way to destroy the Iceni, in Roman eyes, than by violating the daughters of their chief. Problem is, the Celtic attitude to woman was different to Rome's. Woman were individuals, not chattels. And it bit the Romans on the arse, hard! They could not conceive that Prastugastus' widow could be a warrior in her own right. They were more used to dealing with Cartimandua who was less a warrior and more a stateswoman.
Oh yes, Romans loved a bit of rape. These were times where the male sex was regularly used to oppress or subjugate. Romans were the kings of that.With Boudica's daughters, I just can't recall what the historians reasoning was behind saying that they may not have been raped.

Of the two Roman retellings by Roman historians, Publius Cornelius Tacitus (56-117 CE) and Cassius Dio (150-235 CE). One has no mention of the torture and rape of the daughters.
I guess most go with the other account (where they were raped and tortured) because that Roman historian was closer to the events.
