Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I couldn't resist. I think Tiger's Curse may have given me more points, but then I'd be reading two books instead of one. Conservation!

message 1008: by Esther (last edited May 04, 2014 10:23PM) (new)

Esther (estame) I finished The Lowland and it was great, looking forward to reading some more of Lahiri's work in the future.
I am 60% through The Goldfinch and I cannot put it down. It's exactly the sort of subject matter that I love, family dysfunction, secrets, growing up, all told over a long time period, everything!

A few people have mentioned that they have Middlesex on their TBR. I love that book too, actually it ties for top book ever with East of Eden. There are similarities between Middlesex and The Goldfinch actually, so if any of you have read either and enjoyed it, then you'll probably enjoy the other. And both Pulitzer Prize winners too!

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11456 comments Finished Daddy's Gone A-Hunting another New Orleans 1930s noir. This one was a bit more complicated than the others. Still holding my interest for the series.

May be my Group Read alternate selection, have to see what else I read. It is part of my Chunkster series for TAZ.

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments I finished Me Before You which I thought lived up to the hype and have started Before We Met.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I started The Count of Monte Cristo which is a chunkster and a buddy read.

I am also continuing with The Angel's Game and am just under halfway through. I am really enjoying it so far.

Mari The Count of Monte Christo is one of my favorite books. I just started The Goldfinch, which I've been looking forward to.

message 1015: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to Emperor Mollusk versus The Sinister Brain and The Darwin Elevator. I am currently reading The Bees just because I just bought it and couldn't wait to see what it was about!

message 1016: by Kaya (new)

Kaya | 21 comments I started Throne of Glass and I'm thrilled for now.

message 1017: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I also started the 2nd book in the Darwin Elevator (Dire Earth Cycle) series in audio, and one of my chunkster books Chickens, Mules And Two Old Fools: Tuck Into A Slice Of Andalucían Life and In a Sunburned Country for my Australia challenge in AtW.

message 1019: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Silly Putty - do they still make it? :0) I loved it when I was a kid. Not so much when my kids left it out of the egg container and it fused itself onto anything it touched and could not be removed.

message 1020: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I don't know if silly putty is still around.

Over the winter I bought the audible daily deal after falling asleep with my phone completely on accident and unknown to me until seeing on my booklist. It was My Mother Was Nuts by and read by Penny Marshall who I now know was Laverne from Laverne and Shirley. I own it so I said heck might as well listen only 7 hours long. Surprisingly so far I'm enjoying it. Still sounds like Laverne and still a funny woman.

I have this one on my TBR list, Travis. Glad to hear you are enjoying it. I always liked Penny and her father. They are supposed to be amazing people!

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Yes, silly putty is still around. It still comes in the little egg and it still makes great copies of the newspaper comics! :)

I'm reading The Labours of Hercules by Agatha Christie by Agatha Christie. Listening actually, Agatha makes great commuter company.

message 1026: by Prosenjit (new)

Prosenjit Paul (bangaloredbong) | 55 comments I am doing a collection of books for schools - a few of my friends have taken time off from work to work for the Teach For India program. The intent is to collectbooks to set up libraries in these schools in low income areas. Collecting books from donors means long bus rides in Mumbai traffic, and I ill time by reading a few of the books that have been donated. Range from Gene Brewer's K-Pax, Dashiell Hammett mystery novels, Jonathan Kelerman slashers to The Illiad. :-D

What a worthwhile project, Prosenjit! And a great way for you to randomly chose books to read while traveling.

message 1028: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Angel's Game which was for a buddy read. I really enjoyed it but not quite as much as 'The Shadow of the Wind'. I gave it 4 stars but my actual rating would be 4.5 stars.

I am continuing with The Count of Monte Cristo for the chunkster challenge and I think it is really good so far.

So, Almeta, are you going to read an more of the "in death" series? I read a couple of the Nora Roberts books. No idea why it was more than one, I recall finding them sappy, romantic angst. I like her better as Robb. Not as soft. And then there's Roarke.....

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11456 comments Roz wrote: "I finished Promises in Death "

Have you really reaf 28 of these?

Roz wrote: " And then there's Roarke........"

Yes, I'll be reading more.

Dallas and Roarke remind me of Charlie Davidson and Reyes Farrow in Darynda Jones' novels.

Same heat. Oh, and there is a mystery also. :P

Sarah | 18549 comments Just finished listening to The Sisters Brothers for this months family themed group read. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I was going to. Now on to another audio with The Black Country which also allows me to finish another series (well until the next book comes out). I am also starting Temeraire which I'm really looking forward to.

I keep trying to decide if I should spend my next credit on The Black Country or not. I have 7 pages on my audible wishlist, and every time I take a peek at it, indecision reigns. Maybe I'll let you read it first and hear your verdict before I decide.

message 1045: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I actually bought it on kindle in a daily deal a few months back and now it's become available for free on my library app so I've decided to listen to it instead, although I do have the option of picking up the kindle version if I really get in to it. I liked the first one much more than I thought I was going to so I am optimistic about this one. I will let you know. I've downloaded it, or at least it appears in my downloads, but I can't get it to play as yet. I emailed support so hopefully the fault will be fixed by the time I want to listen to it on the way to work!

message 1046: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished the 2nd book in the Dire Earth Cycle The Exodus Towers and it ended with a cliffhanger. So... I started #3 The Plague Forge. I am going to be crushed if this one ends the same way. I am almost done with The Bees.

message 1047: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I had to abandon The Black Country unfortunately as it won't play in the audio app. So that has gone back on my TBR for now and I'm now going to listen to Twelve Years a Slave although I'm not sure how I'll get in with it as I tend to struggle with memoirs.

That's too bad! I just checked to see if it was available on the library's digital app, but no go. We may end up reading it together after all.

I also have Twelve Years a Slave, but it will be a while before I read it.

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I started Book 2 in the Sookie Stackhouse series, Living Dead in Dallas last night. After Sarah Waters and Carlos Ruiz Zafon, I needed something light and silly.

Gavin (thewalkingdude) | 340 comments I'm reading Crime and Punishment. I really wanted to check Dostoievsky's work. Liking this one so far.
