Tara | 742 comments Wow, I did not know how much pressure I was going to put on myself when I was finally chosen.
Well, thinking that the idea is to push myself out of my usual genres, I went with Realistic Fiction!
I tend towards fantasy or humor, so I think this shelf will push me a bit.

Here is the shelf.

I hope you find this a good pick for a shelf!

Wow - this is a great category. I have about 10 books on MT TBR that are in this category. The ones on the top of the list are:
The Poisonwood Bible
Belong to Me A Novel
The Kite Runner
The Pact A Love Story
To the Lighthouse
The Bean Trees

There are many others, but I will start with a selection from the above list and see how it goes.

message 4: by Michele (new)

Michele (photospice75) I have a few also....

My Sister's Keeper
Blue Genes
A Piece of Cake OR Blonde

Maybe finish The Story of Edgar Sawtelle???

message 5: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1020 comments Yay, Tara! And this month (hopefully soon!) we will be able to have the shelf linked in our group description. I'll be back later to add my "realistic" plans for the month. :)

message 6: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Ok now that I am off for the summer I can finally participate again. I am going to start with My Sister's Keeper, since I want to see the movie, but I have to read the book first and then see what else I stumble across.

message 7: by Sunflower (new)

Sunflower | 174 comments Sigh. You guys and your summer....way down here in the other hemisphere we are well into winter.

message 9: by Mita (new)

Mita (mitab) | 104 comments Fantastic choice, Tara. I kept scrolling up and down cause lots of the books look interesting I simply can't decide! I end up with My Sister's Keeper and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time. Can't wait to start :D

message 10: by Cam (new)

Cam Been in a bit of a reading lul of late. Hope to get these two read -

The Thirteenth Tale By Diane Setterfield
The Outsiders By S.E. Hinton

Some great choices on the shelf Tara.

message 11: by Lennie (new)

Lennie (wwwgoodreadscomprofilelennie) | 36 comments There were so many good choices on this list that it became hard to decide but this is what I picked:

A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks
The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

Funny you say that about the pressure Tara, I felt the same way. I was afraid everyone would think my shelf pick was an unimaginative cop out. But the people in this group are fantastic and there are plenty of great books on every shelf so relax and enjoy your month of "power".

Don't worry, the worm will turn before you know it. Besides, I will be spending the day under a scorching sun at my son's baseball game trying to stay hydrated.

I think both of these books are fantastic Cam. You should be in for a great month of reading. I envy you getting to experience them for the 1st time.

message 16: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) Okay, I found 14 books on this list I was interested in reading, and that was just before I stopped looking! Clearly I need to narrow down my list before making final choices. Especially since I haven't finished my June book yet.

message 17: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 247 comments I have read many of the books on the list already. I am going to browse through my TBR stack before deciding on my selection though!

I have read The Thirteenth Tale, although it has been a while, I am not sure if I would have listed it as realistic fiction. I am looking forward to your take on it.

message 19: by Lauren (last edited Jun 29, 2009 05:01PM) (new)

Lauren | 247 comments There are a number of books on the list that I am surprised are listed as "realistic fiction". Then again I say that every month a new shelf is chosen!

I never got to read To Kill a Mockingbird for June, maybe for July. I have read it before but not since high school.

message 20: by Marvin (last edited Jun 29, 2009 09:58PM) (new)

Marvin (mpvernon) Browsing through my TBR I noticed these three books from the "Realistic Fiction" shelf begging me to read them.

All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy
Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata
The Mysteries of Pittsburgh A Novel by Michael Chabon

Since I just placed All The Pretty Horses on my currently reading list, even though I haven't actually started it, I'll go with that one.

message 21: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I am going to also read To Kill A Mockingbird. I have actually never read it before and I could possibly teach it next year, so it's time.

message 22: by Tara (new)

Tara | 742 comments I may switch out one of my books or be really lofty and try for 4 books. I have to read My Sister's Keeper for another book club and found it on the shelf.

message 23: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1020 comments Wow, lots of children's and YA books on that shelf! I found a couple of books I had already planned to read in July, so this shelf worked out great for me:

* I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak
* Savvy by Ingrid Law
* Little Brother by Cory Doctorow
* The Dead and the Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer

message 24: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) Ew, Luann, I loved "I Am The Messenger". Let me know what you think.

message 25: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1020 comments Lynne wrote: "Ew, Luann, I loved "I Am The Messenger". Let me know what you think."

Will do! I'm looking forward to it. I LOVED The Book Thief - although I hear this is quite different, but still very good.

message 26: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) It is, and although the subject matter of "The Book Theif" was much more, how should I say it...relavant, important...I have to admit that I thought "I Am The Messenger" was a more exciting book. I found most of it to be a real page-turner. Hope you enjoy it!

message 27: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leo23) I will start with Nineteen Minutes and then maybe a Thousand Splendid Suns.

message 28: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 247 comments I am changing my mind.

I will start off with The Poisonwood Bible since it will help me in another challenge I am participating in. If I have time I will get to To Kill a Mockingbird.

message 29: by Laura (new)

Laura (lheeney) I was going to take a month off it the shelf didn't fit any of the books I have hanging around that I have been wanting to read, but I won't have to do that. Great pick, Tara. I plan to read Revolutionary Road and possibly My Sister's Keeper.

message 30: by Tara (new)

Tara | 742 comments Thanks Laura! It is hard being a shelf picker, I am glad it worked out!

message 31: by Sara (new)

Sara (hoot31) | 196 comments So I guess I will read The Wednesday Sisters A Novel, The 19th Wife A Novel, and Skylight Confessions A Novel

Can't wait to get started! Great shelf pick!

message 32: by Tara (new)

Tara | 742 comments Is The Wednesday Sisters on the list? I did not see that, looks like I will be reading another book as well!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
OOOh, I've been wanting to read the Wednesday Sisters also, maybe I will do that. It looks so good. BTW = welcome to the group Sara.

message 34: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) Lots of great books on this shelf! I'm in the middle of Wintergirls right now, and I also have The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time in my stack, so hopefully I'll make it to those as well this month.

message 35: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 286 comments The Book Thief has been on my list for a while so if I can get hold of a copy I'll read that. Otherwise, I might re-read Jacob Have I Loved which was a favourite of mine in my teens.

message 36: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) Okay, I have officially started "Memoirs of a Geisha", mostly because I already owned it, but it is a good choice as it is not only on the list for this month, but fits several of my challenges. I also hope to read "I Capture the Castle" which is this month's selection for another of my groups and maybe "Confessions of a Shopaholic" and "My Most Excellent Year". That is a pretty ambitious list for me in one month, but it is summer, so I should have lots of time to read, and none of them were written by Dickens!

message 37: by Mary E. (new)

Mary E. (jujjy) Great pick, Tara! Quite a few of the books are already on my TBR shelf, but I think I'm going with The Thirteenth Tale because it's already on my Kindle. Just the one title, since I've already over-extended myself with challenges this month.

~Peace

message 38: by Tara (new)

Tara | 742 comments Since I am still waiting for Edgar Sawtelle to arrive, I am going to read The Flying Troutmans instead.

message 39: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 61 comments I started My Sister's Keeper and I'm loving it...it is quickly becoming one of my new favorites
