Am I the only one who hates this book with burning passion?

Colette Visser Could not put it down! One of the best reads ever!

Casandra Hassett I do no passionately hate this book. But due to the massive group of people who absolutely love this book and everything about it I am beginning to get passionately annoyed by it. Every fan group that I am in just speaks of this book as if it is the next great classic to live on for forever. I don't feel that way at all. It was good, I will give it that. But maybe some people have read too many bad book and find a good one and confuse it with greatness. I don't. Then with the move coming out the annoying level will get that much higher. I will go see the movie, but I am sick of hearing about it already. And as someone just said. I agree that Looking For Alaska was better.

Ilisha I had heard great things about the fault in our stars and I was eager yo read it . In my library there was a huge waiting list . When I got the book I was so excited the same day I started reading it !
But it was a huge disappointment for me .
Cancer or any other life threatening disease does not give anyone to act like a brat or give up like hazel did
I agree with every negative said about her .
My grandfather was semi paralyzed two years ago
My parents have worked so hard to gain money and my aunt and uncle too
He went into depression but came out
Now he's focused on getting better . Trying to see the silver lining
I like Augustus because he tries to see the bright side
I feel sorry for izzy . Peter is an interesting character and his assistant well , she's a bit too nice
Hazel should be more respectful towards her parents . She has cancer does not give her the right to behave this way . Speaking from personal experience I was sad that Augustus is dying in the end but the author did not have to write it in a way that made the readers pity him .
Some parts were good but this book is not worth my time
I hated it but now I am not going to read any John green book
I've read 4 n I dont like his style at all

Tasha With all the hype about his books, my boyfriend actually shipped me his limited edition box set for my birthday half-way across the world, and I was actually so excited to start reading his books because I've heard so many great things about it! Guess what? I hate his books with a burning passion. I am sorry to say but I think his books are poorly written, insufferable bores. Maybe I'm being too harsh but I was terribly disappointed, because my friend actually recommended TFiOS to me and he even made TFiOS references in his blog posts. I was so excited I was actually obsessing about his books for a while because I couldn't get my hands on any of his books where I live now. The only one that I actually liked even a bit was Looking For Alaska, although it might because I have a soft spot for angst.

I don't even know.

Respnding to ne of your reviews about hazel and augustus

okay im not gonna be rude bc everyone's entitled to their opinion but I don't think you really understood the book and maybe thats why you hated it so much.

It is true that H and A are alike, thats why they clicked so well, but they are not copies. THroughout the book, we see Augustus trying to leave his mark on the world and being angry at the universe for his fate.
Hazel is different, she doesn't see the situation the same way. Its almost as though she's accepted her fate, more calm about her own situation and she can't understand why Augustus isn't happy with just being known to the people who love him.

The book isn't entirely about them being in love. It's more about an image of yourself and expectations you hold yourself too. Not everyone can make a difference in the world, few people will. The point is to touch those around you

message 826: by Siobhan (new) - rated it 1 star

Siobhan I didn't mind Perks, but a lot of things that were in the movie were just too subtle in the book, like Aunt Helen. And until you read it, you don't know how pointless that whole 'we were infinite' bit was (I know it's a misquote. I got up too early.) but in this case, the movie was better. Ezra Miller, Logan Lerman, Emma Watson? How could it not be?

@Mo, is it not possible for us to understand that the one distinction is the only thing separating Hazel and Augustus? That maybe we could see the point John Green was trying to make but also could see how it fell flat? Because it did, he was so over-awed with his own pretension that he forgot to give life to his characters. The book isn't just about love, it's about how arrogant you can be while doing the bare minimum to research your subject and world-build effectively. And since there's little interaction before they declare their supposed love, I'd argue it's hardly a love story at all.

I liked Perks, it wasn't the best book I've ever read but it wasn't bad. I really relate to the way the unspoken trauma affected Charlie. I deal with a lot of the same issues. People keep saying Aunt Helen was too subtle, a lot of people didn't even realize it until they read the book twice, but I thought it was perfect. Maybe it is because of my own childhood, but I thought it was super obvious and I can't understand how anyone could miss it. I was actually suspicious of Aunt Helen through most of the book. I also thought Charlie exhibited the signs way before the truth was revealed so it wasn't shocking at all. It was just kinda like "yep, that explains a lot."

I'm glad the movie is good I was thinking about watching it.

MELISSA *Mel Reader* HaHa, I thought I was the only one who didn't adore this book! Didn't hate it but def didn't love like most.

I always thought the sexual abuse was very obvious in the book too :)

Georgina I agree! I think this book was too hyped up and I was very sceptical about reading it, however after reading it, I don't feel it was a waste, however definitely bored me and I just wanted it to end.

There was way too much hype about the book and what with friends telling me how good it was, I thought, this book has to be good so I'll give it a read.
Well I'm afraid that most definitely ruined it for me.

I felt that Hazel's character was extremely boring.
I could imagine Augustus, I couldn't imagine him changing so quickly from big and musculus, to near enough skin and bone as there wasn't much said about his appearance as there was when he was healthy and very good looking. After he died, the book just snowballed from there for me. It started to get repetitive and I was bored out of my mind by the time Hazel was kissing Augustus in front of lots of people again. Repetitive.

Their relationship came from nowhere and was unrealistic. If they were 12 years old, maybe it would be more understandable, but for two 16 year old's to stare at each other across support group and then for Hazel to go straight to Augustus' house and watch 'V for Vendetta'. I'm sorry but this was too unrealistic for me. I've never heard anything like it. No one does that.

Sorry if this whole thing has made no sense, but when I read a book that is meant to be so good and it was a total let down I just want to rage.

Georgina John wrote: "I liked it. I thought it was very good. I think John Green is a real talent. He reaches his audience (YA)Looking for Alaska, that was amazing!"

I thought this book was too hyped up, and im currently reading Looking for Alaska, but don't you think Green has a theme in the way he writes (being there is a beautiful girl and a boy, there is always a death, and the girl and the boy always seem to fall in love, whether it's one way or both) In saying this, these are the only two books I have read of Green's.

Georgina Ilyah wrote: "Wow, reading this thread almost makes me want to burn my John Green boxset. ALMOST. Seriously though, are ALL his books like The Fault in Our Stars? Ugh.

I felt that Peter Van Houten was meant to be Hazel's idol, but Green couldn't be bothered to carry on talking about him so he pushed him to the side by making him a complete and utter dousche and then bringing him back in towards the end, making you feel sorry for him. I'm sorry but I couldn't get my head around his character. Could anyone explain him for me?

What are you worrying about? That's the most positive 'I hate this book' review I've ever read!

message 841: by Liv (new) - rated it 1 star

Liv Breivik To be honest, this book also angered me. I, personally, believe it's overrated; at least, I didn't feel as though it's all that it's hyped up to be. The characters were portrayed as "Mary Sue"s, with few faults, and the scenarios were unbelievable (and by this, I mean mainly the conversations. Teenagers don't talk like that?!?!??!?). I kept on reading this, forcing myself through it, but I never came to a "wow this book is fab"-part.

message 842: by Jay (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jay The book's definitely not Green's best work. In my opinion, it was a little over-dramatic. The plot was fine, it was funny, but really? Hazel got over her grief so quickly and she kept droning on about her little infinity with Augustus. IT was slightly annoying and very boring. I don't HATE the book, but I wouldn't read it again.

message 843: by Emma (new) - rated it 2 stars

Emma I keep seeing people say that teenagers don't talk like Gus and Hazel (I've said it myself), but it's not just teenagers. I have never heard anyone, teenager or adult, talk like that except in books and bad tv shows. Gus's "I am in love with you" speech sounded like it came straight out of a Hallmark movie.

wigglesa yes

Haroula Agreed. I like reading my books in English, in order to improve them, as I am a non-English speaker, but I really found the language quite poor. Apart from that, the story was boring, it never felt like it reached a peak even while they were in Amsterdam.

I have no problem with people who are sick, I don't feel disgusted or anything, and I wish them all to recover soon, but while reading this book, I constantly felt I had enough of cancer.

I'd be much more insterested in reading 'An Imperial Affliction', if it were real, but please, John Green, let someone else write it!

You're totally justified in disliking this book. I have a lot of mixed feelings about it, and for a while I wasn't sure what they were. I feel like one problem with TFIOS is that it's been very over-hyped. I didn't find it quite as profound as so many people have, apparently. Furthermore, while I understand John Green openly condemns the manic-pixie-dream-girl trope, I feel like all he did was turn it on its head and make a manic-pixie-dream-boy, of sorts. I did enjoy several elements of the story and I think that, as far as style and skill go, Green is a great writer. I don't know if the same can be said about all of his characters. Isaac was my favorite, and the rest seemed kinda...I dunno. Lacking, somehow. It was by no means the worst book I've read, and I do LIKE it, I think. Just...not as much as other people.
But hey, a lot of people find some kind of solace or whatever in it, and I think that's important. Go Green, for helping people. It's just not my cup of tea.
Sorry for rambling. But I know how you feel.
