A Dog's Way Home question

why did the dog have to try and find the girl when he knows that she will come back for her? like if the dog stayed there she would of found him right away bu no, he had to find her himself. I know I know she was trying to make it interesting but it could of made it so someone else saw the dog and did something with the dog it would still be interesting.
