rivka I think I read this in the late 80s or early 90s. Either in a collection of shorts (which narrows it down to several hundred volumes of shorts I read in that time period) or just maybe in the Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine (back issues of which I no longer own).

It was about a collector who only collected perfect originals. No copies, no retouched or refinished or otherwise "cleaned up" works allowed. And he married a young woman he believed to be a perfect original . . . until he met her mother.

Please tell me this sounds familiar to someone! Google is not helping.

Krista the Krazy Kataloguer (kristathekrazykataloguer) | 104 comments Sounds like John Fowles' novel The Collector, but that was written back in the '60s.

rivka Hmm. It might have been an homage, but it was definitely a short, and no one was locked in any cellars.

message 5: by rivka (new)

rivka Yeah, definitely not the story I'm looking for then.

rivka *hopeful bump*

I see that I neglected to mention that the reason he was able to tell that she was not an un-retouched original is that it was clear that the mother's nose was the real deal, and his wife's was not. I think there may have been photos of his wife pre-nose job involved, too.

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 289 comments This is very likely beyond me, but this page has a list of stories that appeared in EQMM by author, and the tables of contents for some anthologies. You could try searching for "198" and "199" in the pages and see if anything rings a bell, I guess.

message 8: by rivka (new)

rivka I'll have to try that. Thanks!

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 289 comments Forgot to mention, I did a find in page for "collect" and didn't find anything that seemed like a possible match.

More Tales for the Midnight Hour has a short story called "Collector." It was published in 1992, but it doesn't sound like it was written for the right age group?

message 10: by rivka (new)

rivka No, that wouldn't be it.

Watch, it'll end up having some other title altogether. :P

M— | 379 comments Tanith Lee did a retelling of Beauty and the Beast with a few flourishes of the Bluebeard story, "The Beast," which had quite a few of the OP elements -- but not the mother element (which means not the nose element either). In the story, the Beast collected beautiful things, and one day Beauty finds a room where the Beast stored the women less completely beautiful than herself.

I read this story in the Ruby Slippers Golden Tears anthology (1995).

Link to story summary, describing the Beast as a collector.

message 12: by rivka (new)

rivka I think I read that one too, but it's definitely not the story I'm thinking of.

Thanks for trying! :)

Rivka, are you still looking for this story?

message 14: by rivka (new)

rivka Yes. Still have no more notion of what it might be than I did in 2009.

Remember to bump the thread about once a month Rivka--that way it can catch the eye of new members and nudge the brains of the older members who might read it "in the mean time."

Have you ever tried searching the ISFDB http://www.isfdb.org/ ? Searching titles with "Collector" came up with many short stories. Perhaps clicking on them and seeing what anthology they were in will help refresh your memory of the source. Doesn't give a summary of the story there though.

message 18: by rivka (new)

rivka It's an interesting suggestion. But without story summaries, that's very unlikely to help me.

Thought maybe there'd be a chance you'd recognize a title of the main book as one you owned or would of read.

Ayshe | 4720 comments "The Fake" by Romain Gary?
According to google translation of post in this forum: http://sgbd.ac-poitiers.fr/sosfrancai...
Beretta takes revenge of the expert (who told him that his Van Gogh was a fake) by certifying to him that his wife, recognized as an extraordinary beauty, had her nose re-made by an aesthetic surgeon.

message 21: by rivka (new)

rivka Ayshe, I think that's it! And it looks like I would have read it as part of this volume.

Now I just need to track down a copy of the story, but with title and author that should be doable.

Thanks, Ayshe!
