Buddy Read Requests
That's an ambitious reading pile, Biblio! Just Ulysses and The Canterbury Tales together is quite a few pages!
I started Ulysses a couple weeks ago. It's *fingers crossed* going to be a 3 month read. I'm highlighting and truly enjoying it for it's simple word play! The group's going much slower, so I plan to keep re-reading it for quite a few months. Then move onto Finnegan's Wake closer to the end of the year.I read the graphic novel of Canterbury. I neglected the buddy read in another group. *sniff* It's crazy fun!! So chip at it slowly.
*shrugs* I like big books, i just can't lie!
I tried Ulysses and got through page 84 or so. Gave that up. I might go back to it, I might not. I can at least say I've attempted it.I AM, however, looking forward to finally reading the entirety of C.T.! I read portions of it in high school and its ridiculous and hilarious, so I really do want to read them all! Honestly, who knew those Medieval folks were so raunchy?
Attempt is cool! And now you have a sample of it ^.^C.T. is nutz!!! That graphic novel should be 18+ seriously!!!
Raunchy Medieval Folks?! That's why I'm eager to get to Better Angels of our Nature!!! Apparently we're more calm than before. When's the last time you attended a Witch Trial?
Haaze wrote: "CT in Old English, right, Alana?"Haha, not quite! I'm a bit rusty on that.... although my English teacher in high school had actually studied and specialized in Old English when he was in grad school, and he read part of the prologue for the class in Old English while we followed along in a more modern translation. It was pretty interesting!
I like the sound of Old English! It is swirly and engaging...like a sparkling shower in the early morning! :PAhhh....

The droghte of Marche hath perced to the roote,
And bathed every veyne in swich licour,

It's so pretty!! Which edition would you recommend? This summer, I'm going to cave in and go with the only version I found that's identical audiobook and physical book. Just to savor the story, in my backyard, under the sun with a case of wine!
Based on the simple graphic novel, I like the story and want to buy an actual old english edition to enjoy over the years.
I replied saying that maybe it's too recent? You can chime in, we didn't clarify what exactly constitutes an epic. I opened a thread for that conversation. Your input for that topic would be stellar!!What is an Epic?

Schedule (Kathy's CT suggestion)
Back from a long hiatus...moved across country, bought a house, found the love of my life. I would love to read either Jerusalem or And Ladies of the Club!Biblio wrote: "And Ladies of the Club and Jerusalm are both awesome sounding!!
Superchunkster... where do I sign? I've woefully neglected this group lately.
June is open for new bookings. *opens spring coloured..."
Welcome back Paula! We are tbd on buddy reads for the moment, can you join our doctor zhivago read starting May 1?
Paula! Welcome back. Sounds like you've had exciting things going on. I am reading Jerusalem right and it is so good!
Paula, that sounds great!! So many exciting things happened. A cross country move is a big deal (and finding love!)To new beginnings!
I'll chime in on Dr. Zhivago, because I read it recently, but it was NOT my favorite book. But I seem to be in the minority of most readers on that one, so who knows.

Welcome back, Paula!
Guys, ladies, and gents, and (other vocatives)If you want to read Jerusalem, because it seems like it is a book that is appealing to many, we can have a buddy read.
Please let me know

Paula wrote: "Back from a long hiatus...moved across country, bought a house, found the love of my life."It's good to see you again, Paula! Welcome back. Sounds like you've had some exciting life changes. :)
Alana wrote: "I'll chime in on Dr. Zhivago, because I read it recently, but it was NOT my favorite book. But I seem to be in the minority of most readers on that one, so who knows."My Russian professors generally seemed to think it was kind of schlocky. I'm excited to read it as an adult and see how it compares to what I remember of reading it as a teenager.
Dianne wrote: "Welcome back Paula! We are tbd on buddy reads for the moment, can you join our doctor zhivago read starting May 1?"Thanks Diane! I'm embarrassed to say that I have tried to read DZ several times and it just doesn't reasonate with me (hangs head in shame). I'm currently reading Cancer Ward and it is incredible.
Amanda wrote: "Paula! Welcome back. Sounds like you've had exciting things going on. I am reading Jerusalem right and it is so good!"It's great to be back everyone!
I haven't purchased yet but it's always scratching at my brain. Are you reading an audio version?
Paula - I have the audio and the paperbacks. I've been doing mostly audio but having the paper books is really good because there have been several things that I have missed in the audio and has to go back to the books for reference also I find it really hard to backtrack on audio and there have been multiple occasions when I wanted to go back and reread a part.
Hi all! I'm a bit confused as to where we left off on the buddy read suggestions, did we have a group for Jerusalem? Paula, Drew, Amanda, who else would like to join? I can join if we start June 1, or even May 15.
Dianne wrote: "Hi all! I'm a bit confused as to where we left off on the buddy read suggestions, did we have a group for Jerusalem? Paula, Drew, Amanda, who else would like to join? I can join if we start June 1,..."June 1 would be the earliest start for me. I'm already behind on Dr. Z!
Dan wrote: "July 1 works, too. I bet I'm more behind on Dr Z than you are!"Wanna bet? I haven't started. [Hangs head in shame.}
Dan wrote: "OK. We are tied."I happen to know you slackers are slacking because you are reading other books and not off drinking in a bar somewhere, so you are excused. Dr. Z will await your arrival in due course!

Perhaps if I took Dr. Z to a bar with me ...
So Jerusalem, who is in? Do we prefer June 1 start or July 1? If June I'll set up an intro thread today for background banter. July is fine too, whatever you all prefer!
Dianne wrote: "I know this is a long shot, but if anyone would like to read And Ladies of the Club beginning June 1 as a buddy read, please post to let me know and we can see if we can get a group together. I am ..."I started it, but fell behind. I think it was a buddy read on some other group and I was overcommitted. If it were the main Chunkster read I would probably give it another go, if it were read slowly, but it would take awhile. As a buddy read, probably not.
Everyman wrote: "Dianne wrote: "I know this is a long shot, but if anyone would like to read And Ladies of the Club beginning June 1 as a buddy read, please post to let me know and we can see if we can get a group ..."Oh, I guess Dianne's right, it was here that we started it. Maybe next time.
Everyman wrote: "Everyman wrote: "Dianne wrote: "I know this is a long shot, but if anyone would like to read And Ladies of the Club beginning June 1 as a buddy read, please post to let me know and we can see if we..."It was initially a main read here, attempted as a buddy read later. Alas the Ladies lost their luster it seems!!
I would be up for it, but as a slow read. I thought we were chatting about both Jerusalem and this Ladies of the Club in this thread a little while back. I thought we were trying to decide which to go for.

It's one of my fave books of all time, and I was sorry when it ended. That's all I can give you for endorsement."
Pretty strong endorsement!
