Becky Can you create a group list? That way each person could vote for three series that they wouldn't read, because it seems we are fairly scattered, then what's left with the least no's could go on a poll to choose from.

message 102: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) I plan to send a general email to group members tonight and a mini-poll for a buddy read. The idea seems to be popular, so I will narrow down to the ones that were mentioned several times (3-4), and we can vote for the series we want.

message 103: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Ami and I are planning a buddy read for The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende starting Sunday 9/21. Is there anyone else who would like to join us? Also, how do I set up the threads?

Hmmm...that is on my to-read list, and I wasn't going to read Dahlgren. I think I'd be up for it though I will be out of town for two weeks towards the beginning of October, so might not be too into the discussions until my return.

Ok...and its available currently at the library. Sold!

This group is such an amazing collection of interested readers with (imho) great taste in books! :-) So glad to be a part of it!

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Ami and Sarah, I will set you a thread on Saturday.

Yay!

message 107: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Ami and I are planning a buddy read for John Steinbeck's East of Eden starting in Feb. Anyone who wants to join us is welcome. This is my all time favorite novel so I've read it several times. This will be a new one for Ami. We're looking forward to some good reading.

message 108: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) PM me when you need a thread for it. I have an audio book, and I might be tempted if my hands are not too full ... well, ears, may I say :-)

message 109: by Sarah (new)

Sarah We will. Thanks! It's such a wonderful book, I hope you can join us.

I would love to reread that book someday, but my plate is definitely full at the moment. I don't remember much at all from the book - I read it ~25 years ago - but just that I loved it at the time. Have fun, gals!

I'm reading HoL and David Copperfield (I can stick with this one, I know it :P) with you, what is on your plate after "IJ?"

Linda | 1425 comments Ami wrote: "I'm reading HoL and David Copperfield (I can stick with this one, I know it :P) with you, what is on your plate after "IJ?""

That's great you'll be joining in the DC read with me. :)

Well, I'm on week two of Ulysses with another group, and I'll be fitting in Venetia during the month of February with yet another group. So there are three major reads right there, plus a "fluff piece". :)

As far as after IJ, I'm going to see what the next poll brings in for the Underrated Chunkster and I'll have to decide if I'm interested in reading the winner or not, and by then I'll have a better idea if I can even handle another book anyway.

message 113: by Sarah (new)

Sarah You guys are doing DC together? I'm so jealous and I so don't have the time. But I'm still jealous.

message 114: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1425 comments Sarah wrote: "You guys are doing DC together? I'm so jealous and I so don't have the time. But I'm still jealous."

It's for a Dickens group. I'm sorely lacking in my knowledge of Dickens so I've embarked on trying to read all of his works.

And if it makes you feel any better, I'm jealous of your EoE read together. :P

message 115: by Sarah (new)

Sarah East of Eden is my favorite book and DC is easily in my top 5. And it's my favorite Dickens. I really hope you guys enjoy it.

Are you reading this with the group that read "The Odyssey" and then proceeded with "Ulysses?" I've always wanted to read them that way, not necessary, but I would want to. :)

Linda | 1425 comments Ami wrote: "Are you reading this with the group that read "The Odyssey" and then proceeded with "Ulysses?" I've always wanted to read them that way, not necessary, but I would want to. :)"

No, it must be a different group since they have not read The Odyssey in the past year, at least. This one is the Classics and Western Canon group.

I have not read The Odyssey, but the moderator who is leading discussion has been great with giving a quick summary of each Odyssey episode that is supposed to be vaguely mirrored in Ulysses.

John (johnred) | 364 comments I know a lot of people are going to be busy with the big Readathon event in the next few months...but as I won't be able to fully participate, I was thinking about maybe leading up a buddy read of Neal Stephenson's Anathem. Maybe starting around early March? Or even a bit earlier if there's enough interest.

Let me know if anyone would be up for it!

message 120: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) John, if you start a separate thread in the buddy reads folder, you might get more people. You can start threads even if you are a mod. It will be more visible. Or you can nominate it as a readathon read. I know many people like Stephenson.

message 121: by John (new)

John (johnred) | 364 comments OK! I didn't nominate it in the readathon since I'm not planning on participating in the whole thing...but if the selection is being decided by vote I guess it can't hurt to mention it :)

message 122: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) You should do it in the readathon. I'd be up for it.

message 123: by Kylie (new)

Kylie (livelykylie) I know this group has read Anna Karenina before... it's like the ultimate Chunkster... But anyone interested in doing a buddy read with me?
I've tried starting to read it by myself at least twice and can't get past about page 100...

message 124: by Becky (new)

Becky Greetings everyone. I will be reading NOS4A2 for Halloween this year, and time permitting, The Bone Clocks directly afterward. If anyone would like to join me, I will be listening to both via audiobook, and I am sure that one of our moderators would open a thread for us. DONT READ SCARY BOOKS ALONE, there is safety in numbers after all ;)

message 125: by Mary Anne (new)

Mary Anne (dorhastings) Becky: I just finished the Bone Clocks! I look forward to hearing what you think about it.

You can open up your own threads actually :)

I "really" want to join you for "The Bone Clocks," but I'll be reading 2666 with a couple of other people in October.

message 128: by Mary Anne (new)

Mary Anne (dorhastings) I just listened to a bit of the audible version and wow, wish I'd listened to it instead of read it on my kindle.

message 129: by Becky (new)

Becky I didnt have the option to open a thread when i was on my computer earlier. Strange.

Becky, I just got into listening to audio books AND coincidentally am about halfway reading Joe Hill's Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft series, which is my intro to Joe Hill. I would love to give NOS4A2 a shot with you.

I'm going to hold off on Bone Clocks, though, because I want to read that one and my tree-book time is already full in October.

Message 124. I am game for The Bone Clocks as soon you guys finish NOS4A2. I have it as an audio book.

message 132: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) I also have The Bone Clocks on audio. I'm trying to finish up The Woman in White though before I start it ---- do you guys have a rough timing??

message 133: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1425 comments I will not be joining in on The Bone Clocks, so please start whenever it works best for you guys. I'm about halfway through NOS4A2, but I'm pretty sure both Becky and jennbunny are done.

message 134: by Becky (new)

Becky Im nearly done with Bone Clocks actually, but I took notes at stages so I can participate in the discussion. But i can wait to start the conversation.

I have an abundance of time at the moment for audiobooks. Its jarvest and I am married to a farmer so its long dog walks with my audiobooks, cleaning while listening, cooking while listening. I get a bit ahead of myself during fall :)

message 135: by Dianne (new)

Dianne I know this is a long shot, but if anyone would like to read And Ladies of the Club beginning June 1 as a buddy read, please post to let me know and we can see if we can get a group together. I am determined to finish it!!

message 137: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Pretty much! I have been eyeing for a while, but I am scared. How about we will have a superchunkster read after DZ, a book that it 900 pages long or more....

message 138: by Dianne (new)

Why doesn't it?

message 143: by Drew (new)

Drew (drewlynn) | 63 comments Zulfiya wrote: "Why doesn't it? "

I'm probably misremembering but I thought books had to be of the "classics" variety. I actually have a copy of Jerusalem which I have been saving for a lengthy illness. ;)

message 144: by Dianne (new)

Dianne Oh nope! Anything goes! We used to have two reads which split the categories but as we just have one read at a time now (for the time being) anything goes if it fits the category. Jerusalem would definitely fit the SuperChunk category!

I thought we'd read this recently, but I think that was for another group. I don't know if I could commit to that right now, but I DO want to read it eventually, so I might think about it.

message 147: by Dianne (new)

Dianne Hi Alana, we started it here but never finished! Some day!

It's one of my fave books of all time, and I was sorry when it ended. That's all I can give you for endorsement.

message 150: by Biblio (new)

Biblio Curious (bibliocurious) | 164 comments And Ladies of the Club and Jerusalm are both awesome sounding!!

Superchunkster... where do I sign? I've woefully neglected this group lately.

June is open for new bookings. *opens spring coloured day planner* I've got plans to start The Republic , A Source Book in Indian Philosophy aim to finish Ulysses's 1st reading. Start audio of The Canterbury Tales... hopefully our snow will be gone by then!!
If anyone would like to join in a buddy read of my egg-headed reads, I'd be happy!

My 2 mega dense chunkers will finish next month so I'm stoked!!!
The World's Writing Systems and A New History of Western Philosophy Yay for Gooney Books!

Could I nominate: The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined It's non-fiction about how humans are getting better and more calm. 696 pages (possibly not chunkster enough and too non-fiction-y)
