Yep, that's me skiing. Or at least standing near the top of a mountain in Niseko, Japan, and contemplating how badly I'm going to hurt myself on the way down ;-)

Probably shouldn't hijack the thread with talk of skiing, but I guarantee you're far better at it than I am!

message 52: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5121 comments Hah! You're prob right...j/k! Nah, I'm a horrible skier and haven't done it in years.

message 53: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5121 comments I know the starting date is the 5th, but I decided to start early. To anyone who has started this, I was wondering if anyone else thinks of Swan Song when you read about Amy and Lacey? For some reason I see some similarities there.

Angie | 141 comments I've started as well, its the books fault not mine:)

message 59: by Kaisersoze (new)

Kaisersoze | 296 comments I understand the need to get ahead with a book this size. I've been close to doing the same myself.

I noticed you tackled some huge ones in '13. I believe Carrion Comfort was one of them, also one of the heaviest books I've ever read.

Agreed on the pacing thing. Whoever wants to do it that way is welcome to but some days I read a 100 pages, others I don't read at all. I guarantee I'll be either a little ahead or a little behind.

I'm cool with just using spoiler tags so we don't need to keep up with six separate threads about the same book but I see the people in the Sci-Fi group do it all the time and seem happy with it so I'll just abstain from voting on that one.

message 62: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) It was just idea, guys! :-) I am going to cheat and start tonight! :-)

Carrion Comfort, Swan Song, all those Greg Iles books were giants. I told myself it was time for some light reading after Dead Sea, which was no novella itself, so I started Joyland yesterday. I was right. It seems like fluff. This one here is going to be a monster!

message 64: by Angie (new)

Angie | 141 comments I did the same today Adam, and shot through I am not a serial killer by Dan Wells. It was less than 300 pages which is short compared to most of the books we've been reading. I've got a lot of long ones on my list already! I reckon I'll go with the spoiler tags:-)

message 65: by 11811 (Eleven) (new)

11811 (Eleven) (11811) | 1561 comments I'm about 4% in and my kindle is telling me not to plan anything for the next thirty hours or so. I am liking it from the start though. The writing style alone is keeping me glued. This Cronin guy is pretty good.

Agreed. The writing is very easy to sink into. Not too technical or nerdy like with some apocalyptic books.

message 68: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5121 comments Yes, Eleven! Glad I'm not the only one who keeps picturing Swan Song, which was another great read as well. I too could spend a few hours in this book. Sometimes I just lose track of time with this one.

message 69: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5121 comments I can't help but feel for Carter. He reminds of the giant from The Green Mile.

message 70: by Angie (new)

Angie | 141 comments I've not read swan song yet, its on my tbr pile. But the relationship that Amy and Lacy fell is powerful. I think they both feel a strong connection from the start. What do you think of Wolgast? He's such a sad man, but I feel sorry for Carter as well. He hasn't even done anything wrong!

message 71: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5121 comments I love Carter! He's such a teddy bear:) Wolfgast seems like a good guy. Hope he stays that way.

message 72: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5121 comments So Swan Song is huge and another epic read from Mccammon. Only my second book I've read from him. I have like six others waiting for me...lol.

Addy | 5121 comments 20%(view spoiler)Turning in early. Can't even read my head just feels so clouded over. I think Angie gave me the flu...lol:) J\K

message 76: by Andy (new)

Andy (manicsloth) | 730 comments 10%. Loving just about every storyline so far. Something about the inmate Anthony Carter struck me as exceedingly creepy. Dunno why.

message 77: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 964 comments Finally got a few hours of reading in today and made it to page 64 (chapter 4). I saw the Swan Song comparisons and concur. There is a hint of dread mounting as the characters are being drawn for us. I can tell Cronin is a good author. I don't want to put down my Nook. I know I have to get up early for a doctor appointment, but it is hard to stop reading.

message 78: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 964 comments I'm with you, Andy... on the matter of Carter. He doesn't remind me of a teddy bear at all. I can't pin it down yet, either, but that boy isn't right.

message 79: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5121 comments To each their own. I like Carter:)

message 80: by Andy (new)

Andy (manicsloth) | 730 comments Maybe he will grow on us in the coming chapters. I could read this all night, but won't. Early morning as well.

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 964 comments I just made it to 10%. Wonderful smooth style of prose.

message 87: by Andy (new)

Andy (manicsloth) | 730 comments It is so nice when an epic like this lends itself to long reading sessions. So smoove...

message 88: by Andy (new)

Andy (manicsloth) | 730 comments In light of recent developments, I have definitely had a change of heart about Anthony Carter. His blankness is of innocence, not creepiness.

message 89: by Angie (new)

Angie | 141 comments That's true Andy, I think that's why I was liking him so much, its his innocence. And the thing is Wolgast knew this. But I love Wolgast. The way Justin Cronin writes is amazing and this book has me so emotional. It makes me cry so I can't read it in front of people, lol.

message 90: by Andy (new)

Andy (manicsloth) | 730 comments I like Wolgast quite a bit, too.

message 91: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5121 comments Yes, I didn't find Carter creepy at all, but that may change. Of course whatever they do with Carter is not really him anymore.

message 92: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5121 comments Made it to part II. That, undoubtedly, was a wild ride!

message 93: by Angie (new)

message 96: by Kaisersoze (last edited Jan 09, 2014 03:55PM) (new)

Kaisersoze | 296 comments I'm at about the same place as you, Adam.

Very well-written, but very heavy going (for me) with the description of minutae. I finished a whole other book in the time it too me to read 100 pages of this!

message 97: by Angie (new)

Angie | 141 comments Addy, sorry I'm at part three not two. Oops! Sorry!! So forget all I said, and I'll read more of my other books till you catch up. My kids are grown it means I can read without a schedule, even my grandson is 14! Blimy I'm getting old:-) shall I delete my last comment?

message 98: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5121 comments Nah, I think its okay. Whew! You had me going for a minute...lol.

message 99: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 964 comments I will get more into this, but I was reading a different book today.

message 100: by Addy (last edited Jan 10, 2014 10:33AM) (new)

Addy | 5121 comments Damn...wish Wolgast would have finished the story about his daughter. This book really pulls on my heartstrings. I'm really just flowing through this. I love how smooth the writing is.
