mystery series: female MC & computer expert Charles [s]

Looking for a mystery series starring a female MC with a computer expert named Charles or Charlie.

Not sure when I read a couple of the books -- maybe 90s or early this century.

The female MC may have been a private investigator, some profession with an office.
Computer expert Charles has his own office nearby -- across the hall, I think.
Both offices are high end.
I think location may have been New York.
Charles participates willingly in investigations, but wants his involvement kept secret for some reason.

I think the one I'm remembering is the Kathleen Mallory series. I'll have to get one from the library to check since I'm not sure that the MC was a police lieutenant.
