In exactly two days time, the group will be starting the Not So Austen Read-A-Thon for 2014!

This Read-A-Thon involves a treasure hunt-esque checklist.

This checklist will push you to your bookworm limits. It will challenge you as a reader, and is a brilliant way to start the new year and to get started on your Goodreads reading goal, as well as a chance to bond with fellow bookworms in the group.

I would love for as many of you as possible to participate. Isabelle, Aurora and I will be encouraging you all along the way, providing help and opportunities, as well as running the Read-A-Thon both here on Goodreads and via our group Twitter account.

We, as the moderators, are also aware that we can't check up on you all to see that you are actually completing these tasks. As such, we kindly ask that you are honest and fair in regards to your fellow bookworms, and only check off tasks on your list if you have completed them as specified.

So stayed tuned to this spot! The checklist will be posted up on the 1st of January 2014. The Read-A-Thon will then end on the 10th of February 2014 (date changed), and the winners will be announced.

The Not So Austen Bookclub Read-A-Thon for 2014 Checklist is up!

You have until the 5th of February to complete each of the tasks listed below. The first four people to do so - and to message me via Goodreads with their completed checklist - will receive a mystery prize pack.

Your 'completed checklist' must include:
- The names of the books/films/other you read/watched, etc.
- The total number of books read altogether
- Other checklist details
(E.g. If the task was 'read a book over 500 pages' you must outline how many pages the book you read had, so it can be verified.)

Once again, I ask that you are fair and honest, and only check off items once you have truly completed them.

Be sure to post about your progress on this page - or ask any questions you may have.

The Read-A-Thon Checklist:

1. Read/ listen to one audiobook
2. Read two classics (from this list: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/4... )
3. Do a buddy read with another member of the group
(NB: If you need help finding a buddy to buddy read with try either messaging a GR friend you're close to about it, or heading over to this page: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... )
4. Read a whole book in one day (must be over 150 pages)
5. Read something over 500 pages.
6. Finish a series
7. Re-read a book
8. Read one book from each of these genres: romance, fantasy, sci-fi, paranormal, non-fiction, children’s books, mystery (7 in all)
9. Read one picture book
10. Read one parody novel (from this list: http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/p... )
11. Finish a book you put down halfway
12. Watch a film adaption of one book

The best of luck to everyone!

I'm so excited! :)

I'm planning on running some reading sprints sometime this month over on the Twitter ... I think it'll help with the community aspect and get everyone reading heaps. :)

This shall definitely challenge me and help with my reading goal this year. :)

message 13: by Zohal, Co-Moderator (new)

Zohal | 1418 comments Mod
I have a question. What if a book you read can slot into more than one of the items to complete on the checklist? Does it count for both or can it only count for one?

message 14: by Booknut, Head Moderator (new)

Booknut 101 (booknut101) | 4592 comments Mod
It can only count for one. That way it's more challenging. And I can't wait for the reading sprints for January! It's a great idea, and one that us three will be sure to carry on, taking turns, through 2014.

or

send a Tweet to:

message 16: by Zohal, Co-Moderator (new)

Zohal | 1418 comments Mod
Sorry for all the questions. :/

Also for the 'finish a series' does it count if you read book 1 last year and you finish the series this month? Or is it from first book- last book for it to count?

message 17: by Booknut, Head Moderator (new)

Booknut 101 (booknut101) | 4592 comments Mod
No no - questions are great! I want the Readathon to be as easy to understand as possible :)

And the word 'finish' literally means 'finish'. If you started a series all the way back in 2001, and you decided 'I can't for the life of me get past Harry Potter Book #3' than you can most definitely finish the series and it will count.

message 18: by Lady Poppy (new)

Lady Poppy | 367 comments Wow, this is so exciting!

For the movie adaptation, do you have to have read the book?

message 19: by Janis Kay (new)

Janis Kay (riceball1759) | 22 comments The halfway book will be SO HARD if I decide to trudge through True: An Elixir Novel x_x Maybe I'll finally finish Guadalcanal Diary... yeah, that sounds good lol.

message 20: by Lady Poppy (new)

Lady Poppy | 367 comments Two more questions:

- Does it count if you're already reading one of the books?
- Can one of the seven be a novella?

message 21: by Elevetha (new)

Elevetha | 384 comments When you say "romance" can it be a regency romance?? Like, Georgette Heyer's books?

No, not at all! It can be any movie adaption :)

Lady Poppy wrote: "Two more questions:

- Only if it's a 'finish a series' or a 'finish a book' challenge. The books have to be read in 2014.
- Hmm...depends on the novella. When you decide which one it is, feel free to run it by me first.

Elevetha wrote: "When you say "romance" can it be a regency romance?? Like, Georgette Heyer's books?"

A great way to check if it's in the genre specified, is to look on the right hand side of its GR page. For e.g. Hunger Games' page on GR as a list of genre it falls into on the right side which looks like this:

Genres

Young Adult 16,756 users
Fantasy 7,259 users
Science Fiction > Dystopia 7,199 users
Science Fiction 5,554 users
Adventure 1,998 users
Romance 1,960 users
Book Club 1,695 users
Young Adult > Teen 1,302 users
Apocalyptic > Post Apocalyptic 985 users
Science Fiction Fantasy

If 'romance' is under the genre sidebar for your book, than it counts :)

message 25: by Elevetha (new)

Elevetha | 384 comments Gotcha!

message 26: by Elevetha (new)

Elevetha | 384 comments Okay, so, if I decide to read a romance that I've already read, I can count it for the romance part of the checklist, but should find another book for the re-read. That's how I understand it. Yeah?

message 27: by Booknut, Head Moderator (new)

Booknut 101 (booknut101) | 4592 comments Mod
@Elevetha: You've got it. You can read books you've already read, but you have to read them fully in 2014 again. But if you're re-reading that book for the re-read, you can't use it for another point. Each checklist point has to have a different book.

message 28: by Elevetha (new)

Elevetha | 384 comments One more question: The books from the different genres and the classics, do they have to be a book you've never read, or can they be re-reads?

message 29: by L (new)

L | 1252 comments Sounds fantastic!!

There is a lot to read on that list and i am concerned about getting it all done by the 5th Feb.

...i will try my very best and i am already writing down what books will be in my list to read.

message 30: by Lady Poppy (last edited Jan 01, 2014 01:28AM) (new)

Lady Poppy | 367 comments I was going to do fracture me as the novella, but I'll probably read a normal book instead. Would it have counted?

message 31: by Krystal (new)

Krystal (misslady022) Sounds great!!! Let the reading begin.
