ABANDONED. Sci-fi book from the 70s or 80s where the male protagonist is modified (surgically?) to have knees that bend backwards.

The main character is being kept from the woman he loves or can't be with her due to his body modifications that were either done for work or as a result of injuries at work. I vaguely remember the book cover having a man in the foreground with a tower in the background. Sorry I don't have more specific memories of it. I've googled and tried every database I can get my hands on.

It's not Man Plus, unfortunately. I have read that and love it, but it's not the one I'm trying to hunt down.
Sounds like it could be almost anything by Jack Chalker. Possibly the Four Lords of the Diamond series?
