When do you think a book is too high a price to pay. Me it's the actual price of a hardcover that is when I say it's just not worth it. What do you all think?

Jennifer Tabler Im cheap in fact my family calls me a tight wad. I don't buy hard covers the price of them are ridiculous! If I buy a paperback it is usually at a junk store. If I buy a ebook it has to be $1.99 and below and that's stretching it. LOL

Bethany | 3 comments I do a lot of borrowing cause why spend the money on a book you might hate. That said if I spend money on a book it has to have excellent reviews both here & amazon. It must have 200+ pgs. Anything over 6 bucks is a no unless it is an auto-buy author.

I agree

Prone to Crushes on Boys in Books (pronetocrushes) | 17 comments If it's an author I really LOVE $8...but I did pre-order and pay $11 or $12 for the new JR Ward book "The King". But $12 is the limit for hardcovers, paperbacks or e-books. I use to borrow a lot but I prefer to have the book myself especially if I like it. I think I am a borderline book hoarder.

I'm a huge book hoarder I have too many between my kindle books, nook books, I have an ipad so it's this app and that app then my physical books beause sometimes I need a break from the devices or my kids are playing their games on them. But I can't see paying huge prices usually I wait for book deals that authors have or sales.

Sarah | 6 comments RARELY would I buy an eBook over $6.99 and even then $6.99 is high for me. I got my Kindle because books were supposed to be cheaper, but now the prices are up to normal books. I try to borrow as much as I can or buy when I get gift bards, like Paula, I hoard books as well and sometimes can't resist just buying it.

I get angry with an eBook is the same price as a hardcover. The reality is, you are not buying a hardcover so it shouldn't be the same price. I will always wait until it is the price of a paperback.

Kris | 2 comments I haven't purchased a book over $4. If it's 1.99 or less, I sometimes consider picking it up.

Nope, that pretty much describes me exactly!

Stephanie (quiltsrme) I'll pay what I need to pay. If I can wait, I get it much cheaper. Some books, such as Diabetes for Dummies, is time relevant.

Sarah, I think it's fair that the publisher charges the same price for the ebook as for the hardcover. Authors make most of their income from hardcover sales. By keeping the price roughly the same, they will get as much from the ebook as they would from the hardcover. Once it goes to paperback, they get little payout, at least as far as the big publishers are concerned. Most of the cost of publishing is not the actual book production, but all the work that occurs before and after.

Sarah | 6 comments Unfortunately I just can't bring myself to pay over $10 for an ebook. But, I couldn't do that for a printed book either. I would wait for a hardback to go to paper before buying.

I often do buy directly from the publisher though.

Mlpmom (Book Reviewer) (mlpmombookreviewer) Honestly I don't really have a set amount anymore. If it is an indie author I have never heard of then I usually won't pay more than $2 for their book unless all the reviews are 4 or 5 stars here and on Amazon.

For regular published books, it really just depends on the book, series and author. If they are ones that I love then I don't mind paying $9.99-$11.99 but I have to really love them. I figure even at $10 it is still way cheaper than the hardcover prices I use to pay.

Becka (becka77) I don't buy many books anymore, unless it's an author I really love. I've found I can get plenty of kindle books through my local library or on kindle unlimited. I switch KU on and off. When I first started reading again I bought a lot of ebooks but not anymore. I won't buy paper or hardbacks at all. I rarely reread a book and I don't want to deal with storing them. Also, my friend works at a book store so I can get ARC's from her for free if I want a real book.

message 15: by Booklover (new)

Booklover | 3 comments I'm pretty cheap with books and will go as far as comparing the page number to the price. If an eBook is $0.99 and less than 100 pages then I feel it's too expensive. If an eBook is more expensive than a hard or soft cover book, I will not buy it. I read most books that are free and check free books regularly. I have managed to collect full series by doing this. I will pay $10.00 for a boxed series, and that's rare for me. I have amazon prime and order essentials, like bulk toilet paper, litter, and pet food. I will choose the credit shipping when I order these items so that I can get a $0.99 credit to spend on books and then buy something cheap with it. The only exception is when I read a book that I love and I know I'm going to read it again down the road. I have books from middle school that I have read too many times to count, and I have Nora Roberts books that I will reread every two or three years because I miss the characters. Those are worth the money. If you create a private wish list of the eBooks that you want and then check that list regularly you'd be surprised what you can get for free.

I'm finding that the older I'm getting, the cheaper I'm getting. I use to not even blink an eye at buy a hardcover for the full price. Now that I read on my Kindle I'm so cheap. I have to really love an author to pay for a book. Most of the time I borrow from members or use KU.
