Personality:
Ayden is unlike his sister in that he sees the masquerades as a place to hide. Not hiding in where he blends in with the others that laugh and do crazy things with the power of anonymity, but because there he doesn't have to worry about staying strong. He can let his emotional mask slide.

He is the type of person to charm people, show a calm, smiling mask over his true emotions. He doesn't lie, he just simply averts the topic if anything personal comes up. His smile is his mask, in that it is a real smile, but sometimes it is not always what he feels like doing.

Ayden is the person that has had a hard life, and yet hides that fact because he would rather forget it. Even though he knows it is impossible, he still tries. Tries to shove it into the farthest corner of his mind because it is past, and he would rather think for the future than constantly be reminded of the past.

He is the mysterious person always sitting in the corners because instead of having to face talking about things with people, he would rather be alone with his thoughts. When he doesn't have to speak, he usually doesn't.

The only person that he can, and is, himself around, is his twin sister, Karyn. He is the oldest by a few minutes, and even though it is only that short time between them, he still feels, as her older sibling and brother, like her protector. Despite her faults and nearly completely opposite personality, he still loves her.

Personality:
Karyn is the type of girl who laughs and likes having a good time. She strives to enjoy herself to the full, living life on the edge, taking chances.

She hides her true feelings behind an emotional mask, which is why she takes to the masked life so easily. She is known as the mysterious girl who is known for being reckless but also keeping her secrets to herself.

She doesn't really care about a lot of things most of the time, which has her coming across as harsh and blunt at times. The truth is, she really doesn't care for things that don't closely involve her, and isn't afraid to say that.

She hates being labeled, hates people telling her what she's feeling. She doesn't like to show emotion, and yet one of her greatest weaknesses is that she's so prone to. And so she can become angry at people, but mainly at herself for her feelings slipping through the mask she struggles so hard to keep on her emotions.

Behind the hard, brash, bold, daring, and flirtatious girl that Karyn shows herself to be, is also the part of herself that, if people see it, shows them that she's been through hard times. That why she wears a mask over her emotions is because she has so many, that she's felt so much she longs not to feel anymore because she gets tired of feeling at times.

And then there's the side of her that can become violent when threatened. She isn't afraid to strike out both verbally and physically.

Personality:
Lilah is a hardcore chick, she learned a long time ago that if you want things in life you have to work for it. She is a woman who will earn your respect but if she feels you don't deserve it she will take it away just as fast as she gave it to you. She is a good friend to have, but she is also and even worse enemy if you make her out to be one.

Lilah can come off as a bit too... sexy. She really doesn't try to, and she finds it quite amusing when Daniel points it out. 'Isn't in a woman's nature to be sexy? If she was meek and well kept no one would find her interesting, but if she is too bold people find her a tramp. Being a woman I hard and I don't plan on letting people make it any harder for me. I am who I am, if you don't like it... take a hike.'

Lilah has had only one best friend in her life, Daniel. He knows her better than anyone, and she loves him for it. She is nothing like him at all, he is the strong silent type while she can't keep her mouth shut. She gets them in trouble, and he gets them out. He is her brother, and she is his sister, blood has nothing to do with it.

Daniel was in the back room filling a pitcher with water when he heard the sound. He wore a black mask, that covered the right side of his face and his left eye leaving his nose and cheek and lips exposed. He wore light jeans and a plain black shirt. Shaking his head he laughed,"Do they ever get enough?" He asked himself as he shut off the water and walked back into the green house with Flower. "I'm guessing you heard." He teased seeing that familiar look on her face whenever she heard the bells.
"Who didn't hear," she said with a slight chuckle as she pushed herself to her feet. Grabbing the pitcher from him she walked down the rows of freshly turned soil and watered them. "And since we have to go, We will have to close up early today."
"I figured," Daniel said as he followed behind her holding the basket of flowers she just cut. After watering the plants they. Loses up shop and made their way back into town to give the florist shop their flowers then head home to get ready for the ball.

In the dark, she could hide. People didn't recognize you in the dark, and with the masks, it was the perfect place to hide in plain sight. To not worry about what you did, what you said, because you were no one.
"Another ball!" she called as she walked into the house and and her brother shared. She set down her purse and glanced at herself in the mirror set just inside the doorway.
Mask that covered her face except for her lips and lower jaw, the thin delicate black lines of its design not really hiding her face like the ones advertised. But Karyn was a rebel, and pushed the limits as far as possible. She wore jean shorts, boots, and a loose white shirt otherwise, and her long hair was loose and free.
Ayden closed his eyes as he heard his sister's words. He'd already heard the bells. No one could not hear them; they were designed that way.
He hated the masquerades as much as his sister loved them. But no one could escape them; they were a part of what came when you put on the mask. Yes, one could not attend. But then that one would be put under watch, scrutinized every moment of their life. Ayden didn't want that, couldn't have that.
He turned away from the window as Karyn waltzed into his room, a giddy smile on her red-painted lips.
"It starts in only two hours!" she said, clapping her hands, "So get ready!"

"I don't think so, she is an upper class girl anyway. She only wants me for one thing." He called as he to her as he took his jacket off and placed it on the couch and walked into the room behind her.
"And what is wrong with that Danny Boy?" she teased as she grabbed her white dress from the closet and her gold mask that matched. "I'm only kidding, you know you deserve better than her anyway." She said as she pinched his cheek before she walked into the bathroom closing the door behind herself.
Daniel pulled his suite from the closet and placed it on the bed, and closed the door behind himself and began getting dressed. It took them both about twenty minutes to get in their clothing and changed masks. But they always too a minute to look at their faces, so they wouldn't forget who they were.
Lilah ran her fingers over the crease the mask caused around her nose, she traced the full curve of her cheek and the deep well of her dimple that never shows. Daniel ran his fingers over the scar that his masked cover, a scar he got when he was younger from falling out of a tree onto a rock. Placing the masks back on their faces, and walked out to meet one another.
Daniel had his jacket in his hand along with two white roses. Lilah helped him with his tie before she let him place the flower in her hair. The up side to working in a garden is you always smell fragrant, and you have roses at your disposal. She pinned the other flower to his jacket. "Lets get this over with, Flower."
Lilah laughed and took his arm and let him lead her out to the party, if you could call it that.

"Tonight is sexy," she murmured with a half smile as she pulled out her charcoal dress with the long slit up the side of the loose, clinging skirt. The bodice flared open in the back, revealing pretty much her entire back to her hips and dipped to show some of her stomach as well.
Taking off her mask, she outlined her eyes in black with silver glitter on the lids, and slicked mascara onto her lashes. For the finishing touch, she painted her already red lips an even deeper shade of red.
When she put on her mask, the one side rising higher than the other, she looked mysterious, alluring, and completely and utterly sexy. Exactly how she planned to be tonight. With a final smirk at herself in the mirror, she twirled around and walked out the door of her room and stood on the sidewalk in front of their house, yawning with exaggerated boredom in the dimming light as she waited for her brother.
Ayden didn't have much to do to get ready. He would want to go in his regular jeans and white shirt, but he knew that would make him stand out. And unlike his sister, his twin in fact, he didn't like to stand out. Even though, with the masks, standing out was simply those who acted and spoke the loudest, he still preferred to stay on the quieter end of things.
He took out his black jacket and pulled that over his shirt, changed out his sneakers for black lace up boots, and then gave a quick polish to his plain black mask. Karyn would snort and make fun of him for looking so plain, but he didn't care.
Shoving his hands into his pockets, he walked out of the house to see Karyn already flirting with a young man heading to the large covered stadium hotel that housed the regular masquerades.
"Oh, here's my brother," Karyn purred, reaching for Ayden's arm as he came towards her. Her lips were set in a teasing, attractive smirk as she winked at him.
He just shook his head quietly.
"Let's go," he said, starting towards the hotel.
"Well, you can walk," Karyn said, turning back to the boy. She smiled as she nearly draped herself against the man, trailing her fingers down his shoulder and arm as she glanced up at him from under her lids, "He's offered to drive me."
And that was that, with a smile and a wave to Ayden, Karyn got into the man's car and with a rumble of their engine and a squeal of tires they were gone, leaving Ayden to walk alone.

Daniel walked along side Lilah, his hand over hers as they walked into the ballroom. The music had already started, and people were already seated around the tables and many were on the dance floor. Letting Daniel go Lilah nodded to him, she could see he had been spotted by a young girl across the way, and he had saw her as well. "Go on you hopeless romantic, I will be here." She said before she pushed him.
Daniel smiled and across the room to the beautiful redhead, well her assumed she was beautiful since he could not see her face. He bowed to her and offered her his hand, in a motion to dance. She took it eagerly and followed him onto the dance floor. Lilah watched before she grabbed herself a glass of champagne and found a place for them to sit. It was going to be a long night for one of them.

He wouldn't though, she could see that. He would eagerly receive a girl's advances, but didn't have the brains or balls to make any of his own. And so she left him standing there by his car as she sashayed up the steps and into the ballroom.
She surveyed the already crowded floor, absently reaching up to run her fingers down the side of her mask as she thought about what she should do now that she was here. Should she play the mysterious, hard to get girl dancing seductively by herself? Be the one going around by the drinking men and trying to catch their notice by slipping up against and whispering sultry words into their ears? Or should she just find someone and do her best to play with them?
After a moment's hesitation, she chose her first thought and headed out to the dance floor, letting her hips sway rhythmically to the beat and tossing her hair over her shoulder with a faint smirk that was meant to tell people that she didn't need a man to have fun; that she didn't need anyone's approval. Slipping onto the dance floor, the beat pounding through the floor and up into her body, she began to dance.
Ayden arrived nearly fifteen minutes after his sister. He didn't even bother to look for her, because he knew it would be no use. Not tonight. On ball nights, she was lost to him...lost to herself. Whenever, if he did, see her, he barely recognized his own twin as she would be draped over some man, or sharing a passionate kiss against a wall or on one of the many couches scattered throughout the hotel.
If she ever wanted to look for him though, she'd know where to find him. Where he always went. Ayden sat down at the bar and ordered a light beer, ready to sit through the night until it was time to take his flamboyant sister home. He truly hated the masquerades.

Once they one the large balcony he turned her so she was facing him,"Alaina, you play with my heart to much," he murmured as he pulled her close to him a smirk playing at his lips. She was everything he was searching for, she liked the books he liked, she was so much smarter than he was but she never flaunted it. She was humble though she was one of the most beautiful women here. The only thing they never saw eye to eye on was the masks, he wanted to take his off and she did not.
"I do not, you know I am to be married soon, and yet you stay. You play with me, promising me freedom when you are not free yourself." She countered pushing away from him, but he held his grip, he knew she didn't want him to let her go. She would feel cold and empty if he did, and he knew it.
"Why push me away when you know you wish to kiss me," Daniel teased. "I could never play with you, and yes I promise you freedom but you refuse to take it. You couldn't live like I do, that is why I wait for night like these to see you. Because here we are equals, you are a girl following your heart, and I am the man your heart calls for. Now kiss me, before I time together runs out." He murmured against her lips before he kissed her deeply.
Lilah smirked seeing her friend disappear onto the balcony before she motioned for the waiter to come takeher order. "A scotch please," she said before he walked away to fill her order. Playing with a strand of hair that fell from her bun, she watched the peopel interact. it was like a scene from a really corny movie. Flirty, and drinking and laughter. It was almost sickening to watch them people actually mask who they really were and become this... fake human being. Shaking her head she turned to get her drink before she down the whole thing and motioned for another one.

He couldn't see her of course, he was passionately kissing the red-haired woman in his arms. Karyn knew that hair, recognized the woman's mask. This was the woman, who although she was rumored to be marrying soon, played with men like toys. She was ruthless and a slut, and Karyn hated her.
"Oh, there you are, danny boy," she said suddenly, getting to her feet. She had no idea who the man was, or what his name was, but she knew that she would do anything to get that red-haired bitch's hands off of him. She'd give herself the pleasure of ruining the woman's fun, and also save the man from a soon-to-be mistake.
Karyn went up the woman and pulled her away, glaring at her through her mask.
"What are you doing kissing him?" she said, her voice turning high and shrill, "He's mine for tonight! Go find someone else!"
She turned to the man with a sultry smile, pushing her hair out of her face. Her breath came in pants from dancing, and sweat covered her skin in a fine sheen, and her heart pounded. She'd never felt more alive; never wanted to leave the thrill of becoming the person she was at the masquerades.
"What were you doing with her?" she asked, still aware that the woman was there, standing in shocked outrage.
Ayden stared into his half-empty glass and his third beer of the night. He wasn't a heavy drinker, he told himself. He wasn't. But still, he downed the rest of his beer and then called for a scotch, just at the same moment as the girl sitting next to him called for one as well.
He smiled at her briefly, flipping a coin out of his pocket onto the counter.
"My treat," he said quietly, and then when the waiter brought their drinks, he glanced away from her and began to drink his. She was just another masked face.

Alaina knew the girl standing between her and Daniel, she was always jealous of her. She got the best looking guys to fall for her, and she would play with them until she got tired of them, then throw them. But Daniel was different,he was the best looking guy in town and she didn't want anyone else to have have. She thought that was love, so in a way she did love Daniel, but she knew she would have let him go,her wedding was in two weeks. But she knew she didn't want Karyn to have him if anyone were to have him. "Get out of here Karyn, he is not yours to claim."
Lilah looked up when a guy flipped a coin onto the bar to pay for both of their drinks. She smiled slightly and grabbed her glass raising it to him,"Thanks," she said before she downed the glass and placed it on the bar and exhaled deeply. This night was only getting started and, she was no where near drunk, this was not going to work.

"Oh, I'm sorry," she purred, reaching up and trailing a hand down the man's arm as she glanced up at him. Her smile grew seductive. "Is this your fiance?" she asked innocently, even though she knew that the answer was no. Alaina wouldn't be flaunting her fiance so openly, or hiding kisses with him in dark corners. Corners were for secrets.
"But, if he isn't," she said, glancing at Alaina again. Her smile grew into a smirk as she saw the woman's shock turn into a fury, her hands clenching at her sides. "Then I have every right to claim him if I want. I'm sure he wouldn't mind, hmm, would you?" she asked the man, giving him a small pout, her lips dark and red in the dim light.
"Don't mention it," Ayden said, giving the girl another smile. If she hadn't spoken, he wouldn't have bothered to think about her again. But she seemed like she wanted to have a conversation, and so since he was bored and had nothing else to do, he turned slightly towards her.

"Must you want everything I have? Stick with the boys your age, Daniel is to good for you." Alaina warned her as she stepped to the smaller girl. "He will forever be mine and there is nothing you can do about it."
Lilah saw him turn in his seat slightly. And she took that as a sign that he wished to speak with her. She had nothing better to go so she offered him her hand. "Lilah," she introduced herself. She heard people rarely used their real names but she liked her real name so she would stick with it plus she never liked lying.

Without waiting for another reply, she turned away and followed after the man. She saw him near the edge of the dance floor, standing quietly. Most likely dealing with the accusations she'd rightly flung at Alaina. Poor fellow. At least she could tell him that he wouldn't have been the first to have been played by Alaina.
Karyn reached his side and tapped him on the side of his mask, smiling almost shyly when he turned to look at her.
"I wouldn't bother about thinking about her," she told him, "You're saved from a hard end, thanks to yours truly," she made a grand gesture towards herself and swept him a small curtsy.
"You're giving me your name?" Ayden asked with some surprise. He raised his eyebrows questioningly, but she couldn't see that of course. The masks served to hide all expressions except those of the mouth and jaws.

"Yes, is that a problem?" She asked, she was unsure why he was shocked. She didn't look like the usual masquerade girl, well at least se hoped she didn't.

"You are hilarious, did you know that?" she asked, "Pining after a slut. Really. I could have just left you two alone and let her give you a broken heart, but," she tilted her head to the side as she looked at him wryly. The colored lights of the dance floor flashed over their faces, the beat a muffled heartbeat under their feat and in their bones. "I suppose you're going to get a broken heart anyway, seeing the way you're acting."
"Most use the masks as a hiding place, giving false names," Ayden said with a small shrug. "That is all. I've never known someone to give me their name so easily...unless," he paused, "Unless they're looking for me to give them something."
He hoped that wasn't what she was out for. If so, he would say his cordial goodbyes and move to one of the other bars. And he most definitely wouldn't buy a girl a drink.

Waving his hand, he shook his head,"You have your fun but leave me out of it." Turning he disappeared into the crowd going to find Flower. He was done with this place for the evening.
Lilah pulled her hand away,"Well I am not like the rest of these people here. I don't find this place an escaped from the real world. I like my life and my name, that is why I gave you my real name. I want nothing from you," she said placing a coin on the bar and sliding it to him, paying him back before she got up when she spotted Daniel.
She could tell by the look on his face that is was time to leave. "Lets get out of here, we can make me dinner." She teased placing her hand on his and letting him lead her out. "You cooking is way better anyway." She said making him smile.

"Yes, well you're wrong in that I don't hate her," Karyn replied with a smirk, "But I do hate her ways. Call me and my motives what you will. As for being childish, you're just afraid to admit that a complete stranger knows something you don't," and then as he began to turn away from her, she tossed her head and moved away.
If he wanted to spurn her help, so be it. It wasn't that she cared much. He was wrong about the mask. It did give her power, because he wouldn't be able to remember her again if they met another time. He might remember her voice, but he would never truly remember her, who she truly was.
"I don't call this an escape either," he said, "It's a prison. A hole fancied up and called a ballroom where people hide their true fears and feelings behind the blank face of their masks." He turned away, his voice growing low and soft as he thought of Karyn. "It's sickening and horrible and sad."
He was saying too much now. He should stop talking before he gave anymore away. Yes the masks were protection, but say the wrong things against the government and you were still targeted. But when he turned back again, the girl was gone.
The entire world are strangers to each other. No one shows their face, because once you have seen a face, you are able to be recognized. People will be able to find you; able to hurt you.
And so the world is masked. One large masquerade, where laughter is shared, drinks are many, and the air is full of passion and gaiety.
But there is also the part where romance comes into play, because faces are hidden, one naturally wants to see a person's face. With anonymity comes curiosity; comes fire. There are many mysterious people in the world who will want to play your heart; people who let themselves be played because they can hide behind their mask.
So don your mask and join the masquerade!
