Donald | 20 comments Hi,

I tried to delete it myself but got the message that only super-librarians can delete locked books (don't know why it's locked). I am the author of this book, and this version is just an excerpt from the 2011 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest, NOT the complete book. Don't know who added it or why. Thanks.

It was automatically imported only 9 hours ago which might be why it is locked. I think we should let the importer script finish whatever it is doing first.

Has the excerpt previously been on Goodreads? It was popular on Amazon.

message 3: by Donald (last edited Dec 22, 2013 04:02PM) (new)

Donald | 20 comments No, it (this excerpt) has never been on GR before. As the author I do not want it listed, this was an excerpt for the contest, not the final published manuscript. Thanks.

The Amazon page makes it look like the excerpt was available for purchase (or at least for downloading/reading) with 20 reviews.

But since the thing is locked we have to wait anyway. I'll check it tomorrow, it is gone midnight here. But even if it is removed the importer will only bring it back the next time it runs.

As it was published as a separate item, it stays.

message 6: by Donald (last edited Dec 23, 2013 04:21AM) (new)

Donald | 20 comments Those 20 reviews are for the actual book, not the excerpt. When you click the link the excerpt isn't available for download anyway, so what's the point of including a dead link? Please delete!!!!!!!!

I've been on GR a long time, am very active here, and have even bought ads. All I'm requesting is this dead link be removed. It doesn't do anyone any good. Thanks.

message 7: by Donald (new)

Donald | 20 comments Will someone else please delete this book for me?
Or how can I become a super librarian so I can delete it? Thanks.

message 8: by Deon (new)

Deon (deonva) | 3718 comments rivka is GR staff. She said it stays.

message 9: by Donald (last edited Dec 29, 2013 07:37AM) (new)

Donald | 20 comments Well, I don't agree. It's a dead link. It's pointless. Surely she's not the only one on staff. Who else can I contact?

And how do I become a super librarian?

message 10: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Use the contact us link on the help page to contact other staff members.

Super librarians are chosen by the staff

message 11: by Donald (new)

Donald | 20 comments Thank you Paula for taking the time to answer my question!

message 12: by Donald (new)

Donald | 20 comments I sent this message in the help/contact section:

Hi,

I am an author (and GR librarian) and am trying to delete a "book" that is listed under my name. I tried to delete it myself but got the message that only super-librarians can delete locked books (don't know why it's locked). I am the author of this book, and this version is just an excerpt from the 2011 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest, NOT the complete book. Don't know who added it or why. If you can even find the link on Amazon, you won't be able to download the excerpt anyway. It's a dead link.

I brought this problem to the librarian discussion board, but no was able or willing to help me.

Thanks.

Don

message 13: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments The reason why no one will delete it is because per GR standards the book / excerpt is published and remains in the catalogue. GR retains all published books / short stories etc.

By deleting it librarians are risking their librarian status for going against policy

message 14: by Donald (last edited Dec 29, 2013 08:27AM) (new)

Donald | 20 comments Thanks for explaining it. I was wondering why no one was willing to help me.

Still, it should be deleted. I did a search on Amazon and couldn't find it. Banjomike posted the link, that's the only way I was able to view it. Once you follow the link, you can't download it anyway. It's pointless and very frustrating to me. I'll follow this to the very top of the chain if I have to, if some librarians are afraid of risking their status.

It isn't just the risk of losing librarian status. That work was published and was available so it fits Goodreads criteria for being in the database. Just because it is not available NOW does not mean it should be deleted.

In message #2 I did point out that it was added by an import script so we do know 'who' added it. But now that a staff member has made a decision (a decision we librarians can agree with) only a staff member is going to touch that book.

message 16: by Donald (new)

Donald | 20 comments OK, so let's get a staff member in here to touch it. And btw, it's NOT available.

message 17: by Donald (last edited Dec 29, 2013 09:04AM) (new)

Donald | 20 comments I really don't understand why someone just doesn't delete this book and be done with it? What's so hard about that? Geez. It'll take all of two seconds.

message 18: by Donald (last edited Dec 29, 2013 09:17AM) (new)

Donald | 20 comments Who are the staff members? I'll message them directly. Thanks.

message 19: by F.C. (new)

F.C. Malby | 19 comments I am an author struggling with the same problem. I have asked for a book to be removed 3 times with absolutely no response.

message 20: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Maybe you both need to read this

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

If you have used the contact us link then you will need to wait until staff contact you.

It may take all of two seconds but it is AGAINST GR POLICY to delete.

message 21: by Donald (last edited Dec 29, 2013 09:26AM) (new)

Donald | 20 comments Thanks Paula.

This subject isn't covered there. It's NOT an out of print book--it's an excerpt from a writing contest, NOT a final or complete manuscript.

Against policy? I don't even think this is IN the policy, and if it is, change the policy. This is such a retarded conversation, I'm frustrated at myself and GR for even getting sucked into it.

PLEASE SOMEONE ON THE GR STAFF DELETE THIS EXCERPT!!!!!!!!!

Banjomike | 5166 comments Donald wrote: "I really don't understand why someone just doesn't delete this book and be done with it? What's so hard about that? Geez. It'll take all of two seconds."

There is no reason to delete it.

message 23: by F.C. (new)

F.C. Malby | 19 comments The link was unhelpful for me, too. I have added a note to the book to save readers from being frustrated by not being able to find the story. It is ridiculous that nobody can remove work when every other social media site makes it possible. Considering deleting account.

Bull. It's an excerpt from a writing contest, NOT a final or complete manuscript.

This is not just a "social media site." It is a book cataloging site that aims to be as complete as possible. Removing things that members might have read is against policy.

Assuming you mean Skeleton Bunker, I have added "Out of Print" to the blurb. Is that the sort of thing you were going to do?

message 28: by F.C. (new)

F.C. Malby | 19 comments It was an ARC for an eBook which is unpublished and may be kept for an anthology. Out of print is a misrepresentation.
