Kelley Anne | 1619 comments So, I thought that since this is a Paranormal book group, we should really probably have a section to talk about the author that got a lot of people hooked on paranormal, Stephenie Meyer. At least her books are what got me hooked! Before reading the Twilight series, the only fantasty books I'd ever read were Harry Potter.

What are people's opinions of the Twilight series? Do you have a favorite book? Are you an Edward fan or a Jacob fan? Were you happy with the final ending? Or do you think that she should write another book following the last one?

Also, considering that The Host got voted down AGAIN for the book of the month, I thought that we could have a discussion of it on here. Have many people have read that one yet?

Sara (leelan) | 51 comments I loved the Twilight series and Breaking Dawn was my favorite. I do feel that the series is incomplete and there is plenty of room for her to carry on with the series. I want to know more about Jacob and Nessie.

I have read The Host and also loved this. At first it was hard to switch from Twilight to The Host but it really picks up and I can't wait for the next in the series. I do hope that she steps it up a notch on the romance part if this is supposed to be an adult novel though.

message 3: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments I really enjoyed the twilight series. I think that she tied up the series very well, and although some people said it fit "too nicely" I liked it like that. I liked knowing how everyone turned out and such.

I'm not sure if I would want her to continue the series but I would like to read the companion novel to Twilight which is Midnight Sun, but as of now it has been put on hold. It's not a continuation of the series but its the first book written from Edward's perspective. Part of it has been posted on Meyer's website in case anyone hasn't seen it yet.

I also really enjoyed The Host. Kelley anne did you read it yet?? Because if not, I will re-read it and we can start discussing it here. I feel so bad that it keeps getting suggested and not chosen LOL. I think it's been nominated since we started doing the BOM's.

message 4: by Sara (new)

Sara (leelan) | 51 comments I'll read it again too for discussion sake well and that it was just a good book. My dad is reading it right now and likes it.

Laura | 97 comments I'd love to reread the Host. I have it on audiobook, and it's been calling my name!

Jess | 3721 comments Awesome.. we'll do a mini(mini) read lol.

So if anyone wants to join in for July, read the book The Host and the discussion will take place in this thread.

message 7: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments lol! Perfect! It has been nominated every month, and it always gets some votes, just not enough! I have read it, but back when it first came out. So I'll reread it as well so that we can discuss it!

As for Twilight. I really enjoyed the series. It didn't bother me too much that it was a HEA ending. I like those ending, at least sometimes. But I did have a hard time getting through Breaking Dawn though. About a third of the way through I started thinking that it was just getting kinda odd! I am glad though that I kept reading and finished the series.

The one real issue that I had with the entire series is that I felt like Bella's love for Edward was an unhealthy obsesive love. I mean, I am an Edward fan, don't get me wrong. And I am glad that they ended up together. But I was just thinking about all of the young girls reading this series. Do they think that it's normal and right for you to pretty much cut yourself off from the world and practically curl up and die because your boyfriend broke up with you? I mean, yes you'd be upset. You'd be heartbroken. It would take time to move on. But you wouldn't curl up and want to die months later! At least, that's my opinion. I remember that there is a part somewhere in the series where Jacob says that he would be healthier for Bella, and even though I love Edward, I kinda agree with him.

As for Midnight Sun, that is a fantastic "book". I loved it! Personally I would have loved if she'd written the entire story from Edward's point of view. It was great.

Sara - has she announced for sure about a sequal to The Host? I have heard rumors that there is supposed to be another one, but is that for sure? I hope so!

message 8: by Laura (new)

Laura | 97 comments She had said she has outlines for a couple more in the host series, but she doesn't seem to be very active in writing these days. I check her website now and again and she seems to be taking a break, I guess after all the insanity in regards to Breaking Dawn/Twilight movie I probably would too. But, I still want more(in my greedy little heart).

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 437 comments I loved the Twilight series; it's what got me back into the paranormal world. Eclipse was probably my favorite of the series, and I'm definitely a team Edward girl (although I loved Jake as well, just not with Bella). I was always quite partial to Emmett though, truth be told.

I had no issue with Bella's obsessive love for Edward. I'm not one of those overly romantic types who believes that everyone has a soul mate, but I suspend disbelief for books. They were meant to be together and had such a connection that she was devestated when he left. Would Jake have been healthier for her? Maybe, but only because she wouldn't have felt for him as deeply.

I was fine with how she wrapped up the series, although I'd love to read more about Leah - I so desperately wanted her to find happiness. I enjoyed Midnight Sun and I hope she goes back and completes it one day.

I read and loved The Host. Very different than the Twilight books, but such an engaging book. It took me through the whole spectrum of emotions and left me satisfied and looking forward to the next book.

message 10: by Sara (new)

Sara (leelan) | 51 comments I didn't have any problems with how much Bella loved him. In fact it hit very close to home for me. Teenagers can love just as hard as adults.

Jess | 3721 comments Has anyone started reading, or re-reading the Host yet?

message 12: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Perfect timing! I just started re-reading it last night.

message 13: by Sara (new)

Sara (leelan) | 51 comments I haven't reread it yet, my dad is reading my copy. I "think" I still remember it clearly enough to talk about it though.

lol we have ESP

message 15: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments When you read it for the first time, how long did it take for you to figure out what was going on in the beginning? I think that it took me almost 2 chapters ro really understand the point of view and such, and then I had to go back and re-read them. It's just such a unique view point!

message 16: by Sara (new)

Sara (leelan) | 51 comments 2WKS! LOL! Seriously! It was right after I finished Breaking Dawn when I got it. I was confused and sad it wasn't Twilight so I put it down. I was really confused on the prologue and I agree I think it took me 2 chapters too. I was SO GLAD I didn't give up on it though, loved it. I really wish she would hurry up on the next one though.

message 17: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) | 292 comments I loved the twilight series and it is what got me totally obsessed with everything vampire, werewolf, etc, I can't get enough of all the paranormal/fantasy stuff, i'm a serious addict!!! I think Twilight and Eclipse are my favorites. I have to say I was completely PO'd about how some things played out in Breaking Dawn, but ultimately I really liked how it all turned out..... I am a total Edward fan, altho I like Jacob, but i only have eyes for Edward :)

I also read the Host and it took me a bit to get into cuz I was still a bit depressed after twilight was over ;) But ultimately I really liked it and hope she does continue the story!!

message 18: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) I started THE HOST last year when it came out and it just didn't grab me at all. It's sitting in my bedroom bookcase gathering dust right now. I have been told by several people that it really picks up and gets good. Maybe I'll pick it up again this month.

Melody, you really should pick it back up!! It didn't grab me either, but I wasn't willing to put it down and i'm glad I didn't!! It gets better toward the end!! I think you'll find you like it if you decide to finish it. :)

message 20: by Jessi (new)

Jessi (jessim) I read The Host a couple of weeks ago. I first I was not into it at all, it was really wierd compared to her Twiligh series. But then when I got about half way through, it start to get really good. I LOVED it and can't wait till the sequal. I am so glad that I kept going at the begining even though it was wierd.

message 21: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments It is worth sticking with it! I tried to get my sis-in-law to read it, but she just couldn't get past the first couple of chapters. I love how this book has such a psychological element to it!

I loved The Host. It did take a few chapters to get used to after expecting something more like the Twilight books and then I was thoroughly hooked.

Well I thought it was but I'm not sure anymore. I read an interview where she supposedly gave names of the next two books, however I hardly believe anything I read anymore so who knows.

message 24: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments I'm going to start re-reading it tonight. I'm excited, i haven't picked it up in awhile.

message 25: by Danni (new)

Danni | 8 comments I loved the first three books to the twilight series but then when i started to read breaking dawn everything was good but then it changed. I donno if it was the writing or the lifestyle or what but i didn't want to finish it. So i have been stopped midway through the book since august last year and i am scared to finish the last book because it won't be the same as the other and i won't like it. I like breaking dawn its just different. A couple of people have told me to keep reading because it goes back to normal but then some people were like personally I couldn't finish the book either. What do you guys think? Part of me is saying if you finsh the book that is the end of the series and to me endings are the most important part and i donno if it is good or bad.

message 26: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments About a 3rd of the way into Breaking Dawn I really started to struggle. Everything seemed WAY too far fetched for me, and that's really saying something considering the book is about vampires :). But I am glad that I kept reading because I really enjoyed the second half of the book. So, I suggest that you give it another shot.

For all of you reading The Host - I just was wondering about something last night as I was reading, and thought that I'd throw the question out there and see what others think. Why do some of the souls keep their own names and other take the names of thier hosts? Is it because a small part of them is changed by their host? Not as much as Wanderer, but just a bit? Or is it their way of truly trying to experience this world and these lives? And what about the souls that are put into a baby? Basically, they'd be grown ups in a body that can't take care of themselves. Do you think that they put someone in as soon as the baby is born or would they wait until they are a little older?

message 27: by Danni (new)

Danni | 8 comments kk thanks Kelley Anne

message 28: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) | 292 comments Danni, definitely think you should finish it! I had major mixed feelings all the way through the book, but by the time I got to the end, I was better about the turns the story took!:)

message 29: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) | 292 comments Kelley Anne, I often wondered the same things as I was reading the host.... I personally think they take the names of their host a way to truly experience this world.... as for the baby situation, I would personally like to think they wait until they are a little bit older... can you imagine being an adult being put into a baby.. no thanks LOL

Jess | 3721 comments Kelley Anne wrote: "About a 3rd of the way into Breaking Dawn I really started to struggle. Everything seemed WAY too far fetched for me, and that's really saying something considering the book is abou..."

I think they take on the names of their host because they want to experience the world, and their host is completely gone. I think the souls that keep their name also might do so because their host is still there. The soul at the end of the book that Wanderer meets also kept his name, and his host was still also present.

Maybe that has something to do with it?

message 31: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) I would love for Meyer to continue Midnight Sun. If it was a completed novel, I would pick Midnight Sun over twilight in a heartbeat!
Too bad it got leaked and she has decided to stop writing.

message 32: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments I agree! I had so much fun reading Midnight Sun. I really wish that she would rewrite the entire series from Edwards perspective! I would love to have seen everything that he was doing and thinking while he was away during New Moon.

message 33: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) Yes! New Moon would have been difficult to write also, cause of the time span. But I think she could pull it off.
I hope she is secretly writing it and just not telling us so it will be a surprise when it comes out!! *cross fingers*

message 34: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments I just hope that she's writing something....anything! There isn't any news on her website about anything that she's working on! I would be happpy with her either finishing Midnight Sun, extending the Twilight series (maybe fast forward 10 years or something) or continue with a sequal to The Host. Even something completely new! It just really bugs me that she doesn't seem to even be working on anything. You would think that she'd at least say if she had an idea in the works!

message 35: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments Yeah the last I heard she was taking a break because of all the craziness. I would love for her to finish Midnight Sun. She teased us with half a book!! I understand she was pissed that someone leaked her book... but don't punish EVERYONE because one person was a dumbass.

message 36: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) | 292 comments I am so right there with both of you Kelley Anne and Jess!!!:)

message 37: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) Me Three!! =D
It would be interesting for her to do twilight 10 years ahead. But if she was to do anything twilight, I would perfer her to continue Midnight Sun.
I heard that she will continue writing MS when the craziness dies down!

message 38: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Borland (kgborland) Apparently her publisher told her to go hermit this year and then next year she is supposed to start writing again. She is either going to finsih MS or she is going to work on the Host trilogy.

The Host, The Seeker and The Soul. - i prefer this to MS

message 39: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Where did you read this? I had heard rumors that there would be more books after The Host, but never anything concrete, especially not titles! I would love if she would continue the series!

message 40: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments I also kept hearing that she was going to be writing a series but I didn't know it was going to be a trilogy and that the books had names!! woo hoo.

message 41: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Borland (kgborland) lol my uncle works for Little Brown so I have inside information :P

message 42: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments I am so excited! Great insiders info!!! I've really been wondering what direction she would go with another series. Would it still focus on Wanderer and Mel? I would also really like to hear Burns' story!

message 43: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Borland (kgborland) lol I'm not sure yet. I'll try and make him ask but she's on hiatus for awhile.

Little Brown has never been more successful lol

♥Tricia♥ (siddie) | 132 comments So I did like the Twilight series (I wouldnt go as far as to say she is the author who got people into PR, but definately helped some of the YA get into it I am sure)

But I have never read the host.. and from the synopsis it doesnt sound like I would.. What is it like without spoiling it for me?

message 45: by Kelley Anne (last edited Aug 04, 2009 09:54PM) (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments It's basically urban science fiction (is that a genre?). It's set in our world, but basically the world has been overrun and taken over by "souls" (aliens). They take normal people, and implant a soul into them, making them hosts. Bascially the human's mind disappears and the soul takes over. But the soul does retain all of their host's memories.

At the start of the book, most of the humans have been taken over. The souls are implanting a soul named Wanderer into a human "rebel" (Melanie), one of the few humans left that haven't been captured. Wanderer wakes up in this body, assuming that she will now be in control, but Melanie refuses to be erased. She's still fighting for control. So basically, you now have two beings in the same body.

I know that it sounds odd, and I am really not a fan of Science Fiction, but I love this book! It's a bit slow to start out, and the first few chapters are a bit confussing because you don't know yet what's going on. But it's a book that's well worth the time. At least, that's my opinion!

Amanda Orlich Ahern (kittymeowxcore) | 65 comments I saw that! I'm so excited.

It's gotta be awesome to be an author and get as much attention as Stephenie Meyer does. I mean, so far, ALL of her books have been made or will be made into a movie. That's gotta feel incredible to know the story in your head is loved by so many people.

message 48: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Hmmm...I really think that it'a about time that Meyer writes something else!!! I just saw an announcment today that she is publishing a new novella. And I bet that nobody could possibly guess what it's about! That's right, Twilight. I mean, yeah, I loved Twilight right along with just about everyone else. And I've gone to see the first two movie and plan to see the rest. But I just think that she needs to write something other than Twilight! But first they come out with a graphic novel of the entire first book. (No new story, just now in a different form!) and now a novella that we all already know the ending to!

We know that she can write other things. I LOVE the Host. It's one of my top favorite books. Why not continue on with that story? Or even something completely different?

I'm just getting really tired of all twilight all the time!

Ok, rant over.

I saw this on B&N site, the novella is about the "short second life of Bree Tanner" The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner an Eclipse Novella by Stephenie Meyer a very minor character in Eclipse....personally I would rather see her work on Midnight Sun....I find the story from Edwards perspective much more interesting then Bella's...but I hear ya...the twilight madness is getting old...

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments I heard about that book, I have no plans to buy who cares about a baby vamp?? Sorry I would have preferred other characters like Carlie (sp?) when he was hiding from other vamps. I am not sure she will ever finish Edwards book.
