Neil | 10 comments New edition of Malory edited by Peter Field and published by D. S. Brewer. Looks good at first glance. Anyone else thinking of trading in their 3 vol Vinaver for a copy?

Rusty Rhoad | 36 comments Do you have a link to that?

Neil | 10 comments Yes, http://www.boydellandbrewer.com/store... they've just started shipping. Mine just arrived.

Old-Barbarossa | 301 comments Expensive.
What would be the drive to purchase it?
It sounds very similar to the Winchester.

Neil | 10 comments Mine was because I loved Peter Field's studies of Malory and his revision of Vinaver. I also want to read the new commentary and would like to see the difference between this and Ker's eets.

Old-Barbarossa | 301 comments Please keep us informed of your findings sir.
£150 is a bit of a stretch for me...£16.50 for his The Life and Times of Sir Thomas Malory Life and Times of Sir Thomas Malory Life and Times of Sir Thomas Malory might be on the wish list now though.

Neil | 10 comments The publishing details are wrong, it is not 900 an odd pages but nearly two thousand. The commentary is nearly a thousand and goes into extreme detail on sources, text and linguistics. It's over twice the size of the commentary in Vinaver's 3rd volume.

Jeff Chew | 2 comments Hey Neil. I've had my eye on this one for awhile. Is it illustrated? How is the binding / construction / presentation?

message 10: by Neil (new) - rated it 4 stars

Neil | 10 comments No, not illustrated at all (except two coats of arms on last couple of pages), not one of those type of books. It's an academic edition of Malory that is designed to supersede Field's earlier revision of Vinaver's 3 volume Malory. The first volume is a composite text of Malory that uses all manuscripts to establish an authoritative text. The second volume is a thousand page extremely detailed commentary on the text. It reminds me of Matthews and Spisak's edition of Caxton's text but the commentary is bigger. Unfortunately, what with holiday preparations, I've only had time to flick through and am only a little way through the introduction. So far the intro is exploring manuscripts and palaeography. On first looks, it looks very good and will comfortably sit along side the spisak, Vinaver and Ker editions and will probably be studied in conjunction.

Jeff Chew | 2 comments Thanks a ton, Neil, for your in depth response. The details for Boydell & Brewer were scant so this really helps.

message 12: by Neil (new) - rated it 4 stars

Neil | 10 comments I know, I spoke to D S Brewer before release and knew a few details on it. The page count is wrong on their site too. I've known that this release was coming for years and was really looking forward to it. Field must be the best Malory scholar alive now.
