I'll be sure to try again.
Maybe when she is closer to finishing the next book."

Thats the spirit.

The FountainPenDiva, Old school geek chick and lover of teddy bears (thefountainpendiva) My first fantasy book was actually an illustrated version of A Midsummer Nights Dream I read at age four and I thought the faeries were so cool. From there I wanted to read about girls who DID things and had adventures so I found A Wrinkle in Time and I haven't looked back since.

Andrew✌️ (andrew619) | 58 comments Hi. My first fantasy book was The Sword of Shannara when I was 16, more or less. From here I passed to Tolkien, Robert Ervin Howard and so on.

Nick Marsden (nepharid) | 27 comments My first fantasy novel was actually a choose-your-own-adventure type book series written by british author Joe Dever called *The Lone Wolf Chronicles*. I think I was 8 or 9 years old. The first regular fantasy novel was *The Elfstones of Shannara*, which I read, then I was angry that it was the second book of a trilogy. :)

Jim | 21 comments I first really caught the fantasy bug back in 6th grade (about 1980 - I'm old). I was living in Conroe, TX (then a tiny little town outside Houston, now a totally absorbed Houston suburb). There was a little bookstore in town where a clerk had suggested Lloyd Alexander's Prydain books. I loved them all, and that was soon followed by C.S. Lewis and Tolkien, and I was hooked for life.

Lori Martin | 10 comments Great question. Not counting Disney fairy tales, I think my first fantasy books were the Narnia chronicles, when I was in grade school. From there I read Mary Stewart's Arthur books and T.H. White's Once and Future King (also Arthur, come to think of it, though the books are so different).

I turned up my nose at The Hobbit as a teenager, but then fell madly in love with Lord of the Rings, and that was that.

@Lori - yes I did the same with the Hobbit and LOTR. Then read Hobbit later.

@Jim - bet I am older! I also loved the Prydain books.

Me too. I remember trying to read The Hobbit as a teen and I was like, but he's little... he has a funny name... and he's like old. Funny thing is its one of my favorite books now.
In my defense, this was my original cover:
The Hobbit Or There And Back Again by J.R.R. Tolkien

:)

A.J. Lauer (ajlauer) My dad read us the Lord of the Rings books when I was small. He also read us Magician, though I think that was later in grade school. And then there was the re-reading by myself.. :)

message 61: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (curlykew28) My first fantasy that I read turned into a whole series of reading about the Dragons of Pern, the first being the Dragonsdawn. Dragonsdawn (Pern, #9) by Anne McCaffrey I still love dragon books. I have dragon knick knacks and stuffed toy dragons. LOL

message 62: by Amanda (new)

Amanda as a child and my first being DragonRiders Of Pern I cant remember the exact title.

My first was about The White Dragon. Great books.

S.J. Faerlind (sjfaerlind) Like so many others, the first fantasy I recall ever reading on my own was The Hobbit. I loved it and have been hooked on fantasy (and Sci Fi to a lesser extent) ever since.

Yes, I can see why that cover would set you back years! : )

Eddings was another favourite of mine as a youngling! :)

message 67: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (ben21) Oh geez, I cant even remember how old I was. First fantasy book(s) I remember reading were the Dragonlance Chronicles series. That series still holds a place in my heart.

message 68: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeldiack) Brian Jacque's Redwall series was my first, I think I was about 8 years old. Then upgraded to Tolkien and never looked back.

I would have to say that I think my first taste of fantasy was Where the Wild Things Are, had to be around 4-5. Later, I remember my 3rd grade teacher reading A Wrinkle in Time and from there it just took off.

Mica Deltora Quest. I cant remember how old I was but I guess somewhere around mid primary school. Those books made my childhood.
