My first fantasy book was actually an illustrated version of A Midsummer Nights Dream I read at age four and I thought the faeries were so cool. From there I wanted to read about girls who DID things and had adventures so I found A Wrinkle in Time and I haven't looked back since.
Hi. My first fantasy book was The Sword of Shannara when I was 16, more or less. From here I passed to Tolkien, Robert Ervin Howard and so on.
My first fantasy novel was actually a choose-your-own-adventure type book series written by british author Joe Dever called *The Lone Wolf Chronicles*. I think I was 8 or 9 years old. The first regular fantasy novel was *The Elfstones of Shannara*, which I read, then I was angry that it was the second book of a trilogy. :)
I first really caught the fantasy bug back in 6th grade (about 1980 - I'm old). I was living in Conroe, TX (then a tiny little town outside Houston, now a totally absorbed Houston suburb). There was a little bookstore in town where a clerk had suggested Lloyd Alexander's Prydain books. I loved them all, and that was soon followed by C.S. Lewis and Tolkien, and I was hooked for life.
Great question. Not counting Disney fairy tales, I think my first fantasy books were the Narnia chronicles, when I was in grade school. From there I read Mary Stewart's Arthur books and T.H. White's Once and Future King (also Arthur, come to think of it, though the books are so different). I turned up my nose at The Hobbit as a teenager, but then fell madly in love with Lord of the Rings, and that was that.

@Jim - bet I am older! I also loved the Prydain books.

I remember trying to read The Hobbit as a teen and I was like, but he's little... he has a funny name... and he's like old. Funny thing is its one of my favorite books now.
In my defense, this was my original cover:
:)
My dad read us the Lord of the Rings books when I was small. He also read us Magician, though I think that was later in grade school. And then there was the re-reading by myself.. :)
My first fantasy that I read turned into a whole series of reading about the Dragons of Pern, the first being the Dragonsdawn.
I still love dragon books. I have dragon knick knacks and stuffed toy dragons. LOL
Amanda wrote: "as a child and my first being DragonRiders Of Pern I cant remember the exact title."My first was about The White Dragon. Great books.
Like so many others, the first fantasy I recall ever reading on my own was The Hobbit. I loved it and have been hooked on fantasy (and Sci Fi to a lesser extent) ever since.

Yes, I can see why that cover would set you back years! : )

Oh geez, I cant even remember how old I was. First fantasy book(s) I remember reading were the Dragonlance Chronicles series. That series still holds a place in my heart.
Brian Jacque's Redwall series was my first, I think I was about 8 years old. Then upgraded to Tolkien and never looked back.
I would have to say that I think my first taste of fantasy was Where the Wild Things Are, had to be around 4-5. Later, I remember my 3rd grade teacher reading A Wrinkle in Time and from there it just took off.
