Episode 89 - Reading Resolutions

Thanks to Simon (and all his wonderful stories about his experiences) I've resolved to finally find and join a Book Group in 2014. It's a bit of a daunting task - as there don't seem to be many choices available in my area.
Tara - do join a book club they are very rewarding. Myself and my partner joined three clubs last year and at first were daunted. Now we have a few more good friends with like interests so all is well. I love talking about books I've read and listening to other people's views. Sometimes I see books in a whole new light and that is amazing.
I am in the very lucky position of having completed all my purchased TBR and now am looking for some exciting gifts. I have set myself the task of reading all previous Booker prize short lists and the Time 100 List for the next four years so have a lot to go at. I like reading award winners but like to also mix it up a bit with some buy one get one free deals. What are every bodies views on hyped books from prize winners versus not so well knows?
The hype/book prize might get me to read a book, but it won't make me like it. And now, with the internet and blogs even an obscure writer can be hyped.
I have been pretty happy with the Booker winners that I have read thus far, but I have never looked into the shortlist. That is quite a task you have set for yourself!
I am going to try and only read books from my tbr for 2014. It might be a big challenge! But with the much added bonus of saving me money :)
As I slide into 2014 and my resolution to follow the Triple Dog Dare for 11 months I am wondering if I need to go stock up on some books....
The TBR Triple Dog Dare is the resolution I talked about on this episode of the podcast. It is where you only ready books you already own (in your To Be Read pile)for the first three months of the year. You can still buy books, but you can only read those books that are in your possession as of midnight on New Year's Eve.Rather than just do 3 months, I've decided to up the ante for myself this year and keep up the dare for the full 11 months that I will be living in temporary housing.
Here is a link to the blog that is hosting the Triple Dog Dare. http://readywhenyouarecb.blogspot.com...
I want to read some big books as well as finish my "around the U.S. challenge, which I started this year.

My reading resolution is probably to devour those classics that everyone has or at least pretends to have read - i.e. Austen, the Brontës, Shelley, a bit of Dickens if I can stomach him. I wouldn't have to spend any money on them either since most e-book thingies distribute them for free.
I have a vague idea that it might be a good idea to stop reading the manual for life (and I include novels in that) and start trying to actually live a little more. I suspect that, like many New Year Resolutions, I will very quickly conclude that I would rather just carry on reading!
My resolution is to find the joy in reading again. I read a lot but I feel like I stress myself out trying to read so many new books and I forget about all the great reading material hanging out on my shelves! As we all know, "so many books, so little time"!!Happy New Year everyone!
I posted this on the Books on the Nightstand Group:My reading goals:
1. Reading from my TBR pile, both physical and digital.
2. Reading at least 10 books by authors I have never read before.
3. Reading more big books (over 800 pages) and not worrying about my overall book total for the year.
4. Completing a MAJOR book cull.
Does anyone have any advise on #4? I have no trouble cleaning out closets and basements, but I am terrible at getting rid of books.
Melissa, I usually have a long think about the books I've read - will I read them again? Do I want to keep them because I loved them or I collect the series/author? Otherwise I might pass it on.I also look through books I've had for 5 years + and ponder whether I'll ever read them or not...

One way I justify giving away books, is to give them to people I know enjoy reading as much as I do. I either donate them to my public library, or bring a handful to my book club to see if anyone wants them. But it's still very difficult to get rid of them, and my shelves are still very full!
My reading resolution is to read more books on my shelf, as to clear out some space for the new books I desire to read. I also aim to keep my Nook in my purse at all times so I can utilize some down time (waiting in the car, waiting in line, lunch break etc.) I read so much more when I have done this in the past! Last year I read half of my year's book goal in three months with the Nook, and as soon as I took it out from my purse I lost the momentum...ergh, whoops!
I want to start all the books on my (mental) 'not sure' shelf. This is with the intention to ditch them if they don't charm me after 100 pages. The problem is that I still suffer book-abandonment guilt and DNFing 2 in a row makes me feel unworthy.

I am going to do the same thing this year. Only books in my possession for the month of January.
Anyone else have reading resolutions for the new year?
