Elizabeth (Alaska) | 214 comments First published in 1879, this novel was completed much earlier in 1870, but was held back from publication until serialisation began in the Whitehall Review. It is one of Trollope's five 'Irish' novels, although much of the story takes place at Scroope Manor in Dorsetshire, the ancestral home of the ageing Earl of Scroope. Fred Neville, a lieutenant of cavalry and heir to the earldom of Scroope, woos and then seduces the beautiful Kate O'Hara. Kate lives with her mother in genteel poverty in an isolated cottage near the cliffs of Moher in western Ireland.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 214 comments Trollope does show us some of the ill-will toward Irish Catholics in this, but it is not the point of the novel.
