Why didn't Nick tell Tom (when he meet him accidentally) that it was Daisy & not Gatsby driving the car?

When Tom Buchanan was snorting against Gatsby and his lack of guilt over murdering Myrlte Wilson, Why did't Nick speak up, and protest? Why did he not tell the truth?

I don't see why would he be sympathetic about those low creatures, so as to not ruin their happy lives by the revelation. He hated them. So why didn't he say that it was Daisy not Gatsby who had caused the accident?

What do you think?

It would have betrayed a confidence. Nick was honor bound to keep a secret about Gatsby, someone he admired, and he owed Tom nothing, despised him actually.

Monty J's response sounds to me like it fits the Nick in the book.

Because Tom probably figured out that Daisy killed Myrtle.

And he repaid that knowledge by telling Wilson Gatsby killed Myrtle.

Thus punishing both Daisy and Gatsby.

Maybe because Nick was a gutless, spineless weak kneed wimp who really didn`t care enough.
Nick+s hypocrisy is overwhelming. He moans about no one going to Jay´s funeral yet when he is confronted with the necessity of correcting tom in his mistaken belief that jay was the driver he says nothing, nor does he maintain his distance to tom at the end, but shakes his hand in affirmation of no hard feelings that tom caused his best friends deaths. What a slime.

Maybe to respect Gatsby's choice, as the latter didn't tell want to tell Tom… ?

Tom knew Daisy was driving the car, Nick did not have to tell Tom

It was probably to honor Gatsby's wishes when he asked Nick not to tell.

I also think Nick knew it was pointless to tell Tom. Gatsby was dead. The worst had happened.

1) Tom would've never believed him.
2) Gatsby asked him not to tell.

I took it as Nick' s loyalty to Gatsby. Gatsby wouldn't have wanted him to reveal that Daisy was the driver. As well as Gatsby would rather take the fall for his one true love.

I just read "Careless People," a book about the twenties headlines behind the creation of Great Gatsby, and the author thinks that Nick was not, shall we say, a completely honest person.

I think 1) Nick was honoring Gatsby's love for Daisy and 2) He knew that Tom probably already knew it was Daisy. Gatsby was an outsider, so Tom could get away with blaming him instead of Daisy who was an insider.

I think there may be a few reasons for this.

1) It was Gatsby who was trying to protect Daisy, and Nick had a lot of respect for Gatsby, so he respected what Gatsby did.

2) Nick seemed to be the type to just go along with things and didn't want to cause any more issues that had already been caused.

3) It seemed as though Daisy was already hurt enough, and being his cousin, he didn't want to hurt her even more.

Sarah Younan very true!
and 4)what would it help? would that have changed him being dead? no it just would daisy in more trouble which is not what Jay wanted.
