SOLVED. YA Fantasy. Boy working in wizards/ magicians lab, with dragon(s)

Its YA book, with a boy working i think in a wizard or magicians lab or similar. There is also a dragon there too which i think he befriends. Not a lot to go on i know. I really don't remember much. Mostly i remember the cover, showing the boy, and green dragon in background, and lots of chemistry stuff i think on a table in front of him. This would have been at the very least 15-20years ago that i read it, maybe even as many as 25 yrs ago. Thanks for any help suggestions.

Maybe 'Charmed Life' by Diana Wynne Jones? At one point he is in his magic tutor's study, and there is a baby dragon on the worktop.

Baz--did you check out the rest of the Chrestomanci series? Could it have been any of them?

Ann - yep took a look at them but its not any of them. The book, if i remember right, is set in our modern world, rather than a fantasy LOTR type setting or other parallel world or similar. I think maybe he was working in this shop/lab as maybe a part time job kinda thing. Outside school hours or whatever. Now i may be wrong about that. The info i provided in original post is what i remember. What i am writing here, is more of a vague idea I have so didn't want to post it initially in case its wrong.

Wow thanks Tess, i think that's possibly it. It certainly has main elements i was looking for. Boy, magic shop, and dragon. The cover isn't how i pictured it, but i guess that could well be the fact that haven't read in soooo long. Going to have to read now to be sure ;) I will move this thread to solved.
