I absolutely love the ending and they way the author tied all the loose ends together and truly finished the book in a great way, but i cannot get over the fact Gale just disappears and doesn't even visit katniss ever again it seems, and just goes on as if they never existed and continues his life "at a fancy job at 2" like what ?! i just don't understand how they completely push him aside. Its clear she chose Peeta but why does Gale completely stay out of the picture it doesn't seem accurate specially because of how much he cared for Katniss the whole book for him to just forget about her. Doesn't make sense to me, very frustrating.
ANSWER: I understand all points of view and also understand why she chose to make the decision that she did but also seems an extreme ending. No she did not show complete disgust and hatred towards gale, she still talks about him and even mentions how she misses his presence when she goes out to the woods. They had a great bond and he was the only one who understood the real her, and even after she has the last conversation with her they both understand that she will never be able to let go the fact he build the bombs but she is says she does wish she could deny it and say otherwise.I think she would never be able to be in a relationship with him but she shows definite signs of forgiving to a certain degree could of kept in some what touch after all they had been through, and believe it was a poor choice to completely make him seem like they bad guy who simply got a fancy job and disappeared from someones lives on which he was one of the main characters. all she had was prim her mother and gale, seems ridicules for them to all disappear and be replaced with just peeta.

I think that it was too painful for them both. Katniss may never forgive Gale's part in Prim's death. Gale may still love Katniss but knows she won't love him in return and may not accept freindship. I can understand it but kind of wished they stayed freinds.
I disagree... I think the way it's presented in the book is completely realistic. For most of his life he saw her as a little sister and by the time she could prove she was mature enough to be a love interest, she was well ensconced in her relationship with Peeta.
Gale promised to protect Prim and he not only broke that promise he had a hand in killing her. It's plausible that his own self loathing was a demon he would be fighting for the rest of his life. That's the type of thing that drove Haymitch to drink and turned others into morphelings. Becoming a workaholic seems rather tame by comparison but everyone deals with pain and grief in their own ways.
For decades in America "Collateral Damage" has been used by military and governmental administrations to describe the deaths of innocent bystanders/civilians caught up in the fog of war or military actions. Obviously Gale bought into that mindset which created a chasm between them. Because it's the antithesis of who and what Katniss is all about it just proved too difficult for either one of them to overcome after awhile.

There are lots of people who don't keep in touch with childhood friends, even without something drastic coming between them, so I thought it was realistic. He moved on with his life.
ETA: Also, the life he moved on with would have been completely incompatible with Katniss'. He was passionate about being a part of the rebuilding of Panem (probably a life-long project), and she just wanted left alone.

It almost seems to me like Collins needed a way to get rid of Gale at the end of the series. He obviously (and sadly) never ended up with Katniss at the end, so she needed a painless way to extract him from the story without killing him. I don't know, maybe he is dead and we never knew because he cut himself out of Katniss's life.
I almost wish Katniss would have shot him when he asked her to, so that we would actually KNOW what had happened to him, instead of him just disappearing into oblivion. Katniss would have had a better reason to choose Peeta over him, instead of just because they were in the Games together and had to pretend to be in love. maybe she really did love him, but that's not a qualified reason for Gale to just up and leave, never to return. It pissed me off too :/

What do they have to talk about now? They have moved into two completely different types of lives and Gale had a part in Prim's death. I was more shocked of how he turned seemingly so quickly into a person with so much hate but perhaps he was just hiding it before and didn't need to now that he had a place to vent and act on it. I was not surprised that he left, he has no part in her life now nor she in his.
I agree, it's extremely frustrating Gale turns into a entirely different person.
Why would she want to talk to (For lack of a better phrase) the murderer of her sister? They grew apart because he was obsessed with things that she didn't feel was as important as family and other such things. So I'm glad that she just dropped him and didn't care about his fate at all.
To be honest I think that Gale had served his purpose, she would never have been able to get over his part in Prims death and I don't think that he would have ever been able to get over Peeta still being in the picture (as I don't believe that if Katniss chose Gale Peeta would disappear)
Ar first I found it so wrong. Then, after rereading the books, I realised that it was better. None of them could handle meeting eachother again. The feelins they had for eachother, the feelings Katniss never understood, would broke her again.
Katniss never chose. She just accepted.
Katniss never chose. She just accepted.
Well I found it dissapointing too that Gale wasn't mentioned not even a form of communication but I guess after prim's death they weren't as close as they were before and she was blocking out everybody but Haymitch and Peeta I guess understands her.
It seems that Gale didn't even want to be apart of her life anymore, well to me. Gale and Katniss are completely two different persons now

I get that she would have blamed him for Prims death. But then again, that is just petty on her part. He was would have never killed Prim. Some bitch just took his idea and killed her. She knew that deep down. I hate that he just left. I wanted her to have that moment where she was like "hey, I love whoever. So I was mad at both of them.
I think it's fair because if he didn't there would always be a sort of tension between Katniss and Petta's love life if he stuck around. Gale was a good character and a necessity to the book but lets face the facts, he was in the way a little. I think that Suzanne Collins just left out the part in the epilogue where Gale visits his mother and introduces her to his wife and newborn baby and catches up with Katniss as her friend.
I, my self did not like the ending of the book. One of the reasons is that gale just disappears *poof* and he is gone forever... Like what?!?!? First of all gale is describe as katniss' best friend, he would never leave her like he did in the book! It just doesn't make any sence
Plus I think that gale should have ended up with gale instead of Peeta. Peeta is weak and the only. Thing he can do is bake and talk... Like wow what a good thing in a man.... It's stupid! Gale was good and strong! And he did not killed prim it was coin! Gale didn't know.

The friendship was over when Gale kissed Katniss. There was only one way forward after that and that's as romantic partners. It lasted as long as it did because Gale thought he was in with a chance right until the end. He wasn't going to hang around once Katniss chose Peeta.
There's a possible foreshadowing of Gale visiting the lake several years in the future that occurs mid-way in MJ.
It's when Katniss, Gale and the propos team visit the lake.
"When I come back around to the little concrete house beside the lake, I pause in the doorway and see Gale propping the crooked poker he salvaged against the wall by the hearth. For a moment I have an image of a lone stranger, sometime far in the future, wandering lost in the wilderness and coming upon this small place of refuge, with the pile of split logs, the hearth, the poker. Wondering how it came to be." (Mockingjay)

Nothing about the way the book ended was at all fair to me. Honestly. The ending is utter crap... in my opinion, of course. Not only was it un-ideal and completely out of Katniss's character (again, my opinion), but it went against everything the book stood for. Being a serious Hunger Games fan, I was seriously disappointed with the last book. Left me in a nasty funk for weeks.
Not how a dystopian book should end.
Not how a dystopian book should end.
I was content with the ending. To me, there was not a doubt that Katniss & Peeta would end up together. Peeta loved Katniss from the time she raised her hand to sing the valley song and saw her with two braids instead of one. And he was her boy with the bread; her always. However, I do wish there were some closure notes on Gale and his family- i.e., they kept in touch, made monthly visits, fell in love with someone else and had kids. Also, I would have like to have seen closure notes on Hamish (maybe he became godfather to the children), Ann & Finnick's child, Katniss's mom. Ms. Collins probably thought that it was better for Katniss to grieve without Gale there to remind her of his hand in killing her sister, Prim. Whereas, Gale probably wanted to get away from Katniss & District 12 and all of the horrors he had experienced growing up, have a life, and not be reminded of his hand in killing Prim. It was there time to move on.
Gale had one interest and one interest only: starting a revolution. Once Katniss got in the limelight and won the games with Peeta, he had found his meal ticket to what he wanted to do. Sure, it's noble to want to fight for the freedom of his people but I don't think he was earnest at all to Katniss and what she wanted. I wasn't bothered when he dropped out of the picture.
I think it was unfair that Gale would abandon her in this way when he claimed to care for her that way. I think he wasn't in love with Katniss like Peeta was , he was in love with having an assured future. He was afraid to be left alone. Also , I think he confused about his feelings for her , he could never tell the difference between caring for someone and LOVING someone. Anyways , we know Katniss will never be able to forgive him for Prim completely. To me it's time for him to move on. Although I wish we had more of a chance to see more of him in the books , to know him better as a character. I'm just glad Katniss and Peeta ended together...
I didn't mind Gale in the books, but the movies made me strongly dislike him! I think it's quite realistic for Katniss to stop talking to him, I mean he kind of played a part in Prim's death. I would feel exactly the same way if someone did that to one of my brothers.
I think she should've had Gale still there but have Madge survive or something and then they could get married and they'd all be happy. Kinda like Twilight.
They had known each other their whole lives. Sure, I might not be able to marry the person who killed my little sister, but he was her best friend. Out of all the pain Katniss had gone through in the Hunger Games she chose not to face Gale. That wasn't fair to Gale. They should have been able to stay friends, or at least keep in contact. If it would have been hard to stay friends, don't you think it would be just a hard to lose your best friend? Maybe it's because I believe that Gale and Katniss were meant to be, but the ending in relations to Gale broke my heart.
Don't forget the absolute disgust that Katniss feels towards Gale after he comes up with the plan to destroy the Nut by burying people alive - something which is made worse by the fact that 12 is a mining district and it's the way that both of their fathers died. I think this is that point at which it's clear that he's crossed a line and she will never see him the same way again.
I agree; i mean they are like best friends. Sure he kinda killed Prime, but not on purpose. Katniss knows that Gale didnt mean to do it yet she still push him away. I was surprised that they didnt even talk after that incident.
I am really glad that Gale finally left D. 12. In the movie, I didn't like him kiss Katniss. Now Katinns can marry Petta without Gale being there to frown and feel sorry for him self.
i totally agree with what you're saying i think he should have still been mentioned maybe he could have wrote a letter to her or something? Seems more realistic
