Debi Parker | 6 comments This is what I remember: the "hero" is an adult human male who paints - either for a job or for therapy. He paints a lot of red in his paintings, even when things aren't actually red. One day, an alien fleet recruits (maybe willingly, maybe forcibly) him to join their space battle against somebody else. He goes, he fights, he makes friends with a cat-person, he eventually comes back home. When he comes back home, he doesn't use as much red anymore. There's something in it about adrenaline, a reference to the Flying Dutchman... I read it a long time ago, managed to find it again a few years ago, but have completely forgotten publication date, publisher, author, and title. The cover I remember seeing had the cat-person on the cover. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Fresno Bob | 128 comments For what it is worth, Larry niven's Kzin are cat people. Does that jog anything?

Debi Parker | 6 comments I'm almost certain that it's a stand-alone book... Ah - I just looked those up. I've read a couple of the Kzin books, and sadly they're not what I'm looking for. Thanks, though!

Debi Parker | 6 comments The first time I read it was probably 20 or more years ago; the last time I read it was in the last 5 years.

Debi, are you still looking for this book?

Debi Parker | 6 comments Yes, I am! I'm no closer to finding it.

Peter Meilinger | 469 comments Sounds like Hour of the Horde by Gordon R Dickson. It's the adrenaline rush that makes the human and other aliens from "uncivilized" races so effective against the overwhelming alien armada that's attacking.

Did the human have only one arm at the beginning of the story? Did he have to fight every other alien on the ship he was assigned to in order to become the leader?

Debi Parker | 6 comments I don't remember! I really only remember him painting & the adrenaline thing. And there might have been a comment about the Flying Dutchman somewhere - that reference is how I found it the last time I was looking for it, but I can't seem to repeat the trick this time. Sigh. I've ordered "Horde" from my library. We'll see! Thanks for the idea. :-)
