I read Allegiant awhile back and you know that one scene where Tris and Tobias make out in (extra room or closet idk) and well I couldn't figure out if they had sex or not because it wasn't really clear. BUT you gotta admit that part was definitely different than their other Fourtris moments.

It wasn't important to the plot or anything, but intimacy WAS a big issue in the first book -- it was in Tris's fear landscape. It was a legitimate concern for her. Seems kind of pointless to have brought it up at all if it was going to be swept under the rug as an "open to interpretation" thing. Did she face her fear or not? And if it's not important whether she did or not, why'd she ever bring it up?
I think they did it. It was vaguely written though. If they didn't, maybe they just cuddled the whole night naked or half naked.
I don't think it is important to the rest of the story whether they did it or not. Maybe that is why Ms Roth had that scene that way.

I think that scene was intentionally left open for interpretation.
But, I seriously doubt that they did. Personally, I believe that all that happens is what we read. They get...friendly, and then sleep.
Tris and Tobias both had big intimacy issues due to their Abnegation upbringing. Tris was horrified the first time she saw people kissing in public and intimacy was in her fear landscape in Divergent.
Tobias had all the same reservations that she did, times ten. Tris, at least, had a loving family who, even though it was rare, would touch each other in non-threatening ways. (her parents holding hands, her mom cutting her hair, etc.)
Almost the only contact Tobias knew until he left home, was abusive.
So the fact that they can even do as much as we read is a huge deal for both of them.
More than that, sex would have been a huge step in their relationship, but there's no mention of anything afterward. If they'd done more than we read about, there would have been something said about it.
Also, they're in the middle of alot of other stuff and she was having serious thoughts of breaking up with him not too long before. I really doubt taking a big step like that was anywhere on their minds at the moment.
