Marketing. Shameless self-promotion is annoying and doesn't get you anywhere anyway. And the only sites that allow you to post your book's links are only ever visited by other authors who are there only long enough to post their own links. So I guess, more specifically, finding where your target readers really are. And when you find them, figuring out how to share why you think they would like your book without coming across like you're trying to shove your book down their throats. If I could afford it, I would just run ads. Ads at least, are not annoying. But online, you're charged just for people seeing them and they rarely lead to purchases. And in print (magazines, etc) the price is outrageous.
