colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments That's a heck of a delay. Hopefully it'll be cut shorter.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Just a warning for anyone who used TurboTax free edition to file simple itemized deductions in the past...

You are now required to upgrade to the Deluxe edition to file anything more than the EZ form.

Also, some of the Deluxe options have been moved to Premier, so on and so forth.

Of course, they don't tell you this until you've already filled out your info and they go "Oops - you need to give us monies if you want to proceed!"

No. Eff you. I'll go elsewhere, thanks.

Ugh. That sucks.

Hubby prepares taxes so we don't have to worry about this. but thanks for the heads up cause my mom uses TurboTax IIRC.

message 507: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I use TurboTax, so that is definitely going to affect me. But I had anticipated having to go with the paid option anyway, because I have 401k withdrawal and severance pay to deal with for this year.

Fun times.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Some people on Facebook said TaxAct is a good program, so I'm gonna try them next.

message 509: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I just submitted using TaxAct. It's not as streamlined as TurboTax was - it's more bulky like the TT from a few years ago...

But there were no hidden fees or gotcha tactics, and I filed no problem.

message 511: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Today I learned that sharing an Amazon account with my boyfriend and investigating books is a dangerous combination. Somehow a book that I was looking at ended up purchased. I swear I didn't buy it (even though I did think about it and want it... but I was only going to buy a physical copy if all my other options crapped out) so I've started a return on it, but as it was a Marketplace purchase, I may be out of luck there. So... looks like I might be in the hole on my challenge already. >_<

message 512: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Ugh, taxes. I did mine last night. Apparently I should have used Married by without as Single on my W4, but I changed to straight up Married when I got married. I ended up owing money, but luckily my husband is getting enough back to offset and make it a wash. We have to file separately as well, otherwise it's even worse. Apparently the differential in our pays (I make almost double what he does) make filing jointly a bad choice. I've since learned that every year we'll have to run the numbers for joint, separate, and who claims the house, and that's the only way to maximize the return.

Boo!

And yeah, I paid the stupid $30 to file itemized with Turbotax, but I'm done next year. I only paid them that because I had already done 5 sets of taxes for all of our scenarios and I was done.

BS that since I've always used them they have all of my personal information.. They show you it all, but if you want them to keep that information so you don't have to type it in again you have to pay Another $30 on top of the $30 itemized. So I had to set up 3 accounts and type all of the personal stuff in 5 times.

Last night was awesome, in case you can't tell.

And yes, I've already changed my withholdings. And to think, people told me I need to claim expemptions once I got married. Pfft! I would have owed like $10,000 instead of $700!

Taxes are bull crap.

Also, one last rant. So beyond stupid that you can claim interest paid towards student loans if you are married filing jointly, but for some reason you are not allowed to claim that interest paid if you are married filing separately.

Whatever. At least it's done with.

message 513: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes ^The tax rules are set to make it so only those that can afford to have someone do them for them can benefit. I lived in the US for three years and Canada's tax schemes are crazy, but nothing like the US's.

I am thankful that I have someone to do ours for us now.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I haven't even received my W2 yet from my new job. >_<

I got my W2 from my last job already. They were always good about getting them out early. *sigh*

message 515: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I got caught out by the exemption thing last year. I'd changed by W4 to 2 instead of 1, and almost ended up owing money. We would've if it weren't for the mortgage stuff and the charity deductions.

I changed my W4 back last year, though, so we got a lot more this year.

And I'm getting a new Surface with some of the money, which is why I was all gung-ho in getting them done as quickly as possible. :D

message 516: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 506 comments Sounds like your system is more complicated then here... Everything is electronic here now and you only have to change it if there have been any changes. Obviously you still have to check if it's right, but other then that you just tick a box online to say if that it's correct if you haven't got any corrections.

message 517: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I read osmething the other day that suggested there was some talk of our system changing to something similar, since there's no reason the government couldn't send us prefilled forms we'd just have to check over... but that places like TurboTax are involved in lobbying against it, for obvious corporate reasons.

Which makes me love them even more...

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I'm not a big fan of petitions but this has me heated:

Texas Veterinarian Kristen Lindsey Brags About Killing Local Cat With Bow And Arrow (GRAPHIC PHOTO)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/04...

Petition: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/334/67...

tl;dr version: Vet kills a "feral" cat in her backyard by shooting it in the head with an arrow. She has a trophy pic taken and posts it on FB.

Turns out, it was NOT a feral cat! It was a family pet who just got of the house THAT DAY.

I love cats and it makes me sick to my stomach. That could have been one of my furbabies. :(

message 536: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I saw this story a few days ago.

She also scoffed at commenters when they said she was or would be fired, prompting her former employer to state in no uncertain terms, that she had, indeed, been terminated immediately after the original post was brought to their attention.

Even if the cat was feral, it didn't deserve to be killed, not like that.

Agreed. And as a VET she should have been more interested in seeing if it was in good health (and neutered) than killing it. :(

I just learned that Subterranean Press is about to release a special edition of The Silence of the Lambs and the shit is $150!!! With NO AUTHOR SIGNATURE.

WTF.

The edition with the author signature is $1,500!!!!!!

message 541: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) SubPress is ridiculous. All of their books are limited or special edition 'collectors items' that they feel justified in charging excessive amounts of money for.

I have a SubPress book - it's really nice - but I didn't pay $150 for it! They ARE ridiculous. And I can't honestly say that I don't think its quite worth what I paid for it, either.

ugh. I really like Silence of the Lambs. :(

message 543: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I have one too, and I think I paid $30 for it. Which is more than I think the book is worth, at only 81 pages long and NOT being a graphic novel, but it's Joe Hill and I can get over that.

Charging $150 for an unsigned new release of an almost 30 year old book is ridiculous. $1500 for the author scribbling in a new release of an almost 30 year old book is a joke. The only people who should be willing to pay for that are people who have no concept of money, like Dubya or something. He knows that money exists and that he can spend it, but it's for other people to think about the impact of how he does so.
