colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Looks good. :>

***

Today I'm wondering if I'm gonna get in trouble in a geek group I'km in on Facebook. Someone posted a picture from Big Bang Theory of Sheldon talking in a movie theater during a book adaptation being like "Actually, in the book they..."

And the poster wrote "who else does this?"

And a bunch of people were like "Me! It annoys my friends."

And I wrote "This is not me, because it's incredibly rude to talk in a movie theater and hamper other people's viewing experiences.

I will, however, pick it apart afterwards... or, sometimes, if I'm watching at home, but usually only on subsequent viewings."

***

Speaking of movies, Maleficent is *awesome*! >:D

I was a bit trepidatious going in, but I think they handled it really well.

Oh, good! I've been waiting for you to see it and report back. I had some concerns re: Disney.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments We went to see Edge of Tomorrow this weekend. I...actually liked it! It was a little slow (and a bit silly) at the beginning but the pace sped up and it rolled nicely for me. I'm not the biggest Tom Cruise fan but I gotta say the man is entertaining. It was better than the new X-Man movie (IMO).

message 457: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I keep hearing such good things about Edge of Tomorrow, and I'm soooooooo tempted. I love sci fi more than almost any genre in the world. Its just that I hate Tom Cruise with a passion almost as bright as my love for said genre. Argh! So tempted! And Emily Blunt?! A decent actress as a competent soldier?! You're killing me!

She was a badass, to be sure. Minor spoiler that you probably already know and won't spoil the plot for you: If it makes any difference, (view spoiler)

I loved the book that Edge of Tomorrow is based on and from what I've seen of the trailers it looks as though the move is doing something different enough to still be interesting. Looking forward to seeing this one now.

Emily Blunt's character is awesome in the book and it sounds like she pulled it off.

I just ordered the book yesterday (two copies, one print for me and an audio for hubby). I can only imagine the book is amazing cause the movie was pretty good.

My hubby is the same way.

But that - to me - is delicious. I love the Royal Red Robin burger.

Gerard Quinn | 165 comments Mrs Joseph, are you a fan of Rik Mayall's comedy or is it just the film? His tv shows The Young Ones and Bottom have cult status on this side of the Atlantic. I would recommend them.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Today I learned...

That new covers for old books are BAD.
O_O

Creepy. Bad.

Random Penguin released a new cover for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for their "Modern Classics" series.

 photo charlie-chocolate-factory1.jpg

O_O

That's a book that 1) I would never pick up but if someone gave to me 2) would have to be kept face down and/or covered at all times.

Creepy.

That dead-eyed stare...

message 476: by Laurel (new)

Laurel It's supposed to be part of their re-launch of children's books marketed to adult audiences. Which makes the cover all the creepier!

Jackie (thenightowl) Laurel wrote: "It's supposed to be part of their re-launch of children's books marketed to adult audiences. Which makes the cover all the creepier!"

Agreed! Also, it's not even reflective of what the book is about.

To both Laurel and Jackie's points.

Elise Kleuskens Just one word: WHY????

message 480: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes I get the sixties aesthetic that was probably aimed for, but yep, creepy and all sorts of fail.

message 481: by Cora (new)

Cora Foerstner (corafoerstner) The cover is way, way beyond creepy. Roald Dahl is clawing out of his grave to haunt the illustrator and everyone who though this was a good idea. If they are marketing children's books to adults, will they start marketing adult books to kids: for Lolita, a cute smiling little girl playing hopscotch with an avuncular man in the background cheering her on?

message 482: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Today I learned...

...that there is an author re-writing Emily Brontë/Charlotte Brontë books into actual romances.

O_O

The Horror!!!

She's already done Wuthering Heights as You Make Me and she recently completed Jane Eyre as the book Live for Me.

And just to put the $10 on the $20 - the books are New Adult. O_o

WTF, man. WTF.

message 483: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments ...and the re-writing craze continues. Instead of monsters, we get romance. Which is scarier.

That cover makes me think of the Stepford Wives... A book and movie that I've avoided for as long as I can remember.

message 491: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments Steford wives is okay. The original anyway. It's campy and very outdated. But I liked it. The remake on the other hand...
