Nyssa | 2023 comments Cool! :D

I was giddy as could be when I learned that there was a companion on Dr. Who named Nyssa. One of my daughter's teachers named her daughter Nyssa after said companion. My mom said she got my name from a novel, but that she didn't remember which one (which is very typical of my mother).

message 3: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) How do you pronounce it? (I've never watched Dr. Who so I've never heard it spoken.) I hear it as "Nissa" but I can think of a couple variations...

message 4: by Christa (new)

Christa (christaw) My mom got my name from a book, too. Not in a thought-out way, though - more like a "last romance novel she read before going into labor" way.

My name (as well as the Dr. Who companion's) is pronounced "Knee-sah".

I had a teacher who insisted on calling me "Ni-sah" (and had the nerve to tell me that my mother spelled my name incorrectly) so I stopped responding to her.

The only other "Knee-sah" I've met in person spelled her name Nesa.

message 6: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) My mom alternately claims that my name was taken from her best friend and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. It's probably both.

message 7: by Dan (new)

Dan Schwent (akagunslinger) There's a good chance I'm named after a horse my Grandpa owned in the late 1960's. He has a picture of it in his wallet and it's the only picture in there.

Hahah! I used to get that, too. That my name was misspelled or I "wasn't pronouncing it right." :\

Oh, really?

Ahh, OK. :)

I really hate when people have the audacity to correct other peoples' names. Even if it is phonetically or traditionally different than what they are used to (or think it should be), it's not their choice how to pronounce or spell it, so I don't get the need to correct. I don't blame you for not responding to her!

I'm 31 years old, and my grandpa still to this day spells my name wrong. (Rebekah rather than Rebecca.) But he's my grandpa, so I can forgive him - and at this point it's more of a longstanding joke than anything. Anyone else would get the deathglare.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments My name was an "OMG, it's a girl" in the delivery room name. They had assumed I was a boy and only picked out boy names. So Dad named me and mom got the middle name.

Well, it seems pretty clear that he loved the horse, so at least you have a namesake that meant something to him! ;)

His other horse's name was Patches so I think things turned out okay.

That happened to me, MrsJoseph! My parents had already had 2 boys, so they figured "what are the odds? We'll surely have another boy." Wrong!!! So they scrambled. They got my first name from my Grandmother and my middle name, Marie, my 9 year old brother (at that time) picked. It seems he had a crush on a girl in his class and that's why he chose it. I think that's kinda cute.

Haha... My cousin was one of those. They had the name picked out as Tristan Scott... and then she wasn't a boy. So she was named Autumn because she was born on the first day of it.

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 331 comments The name they picked out for me was Sean Patrick (goes well with O'Marra, don't ya think? lol). I used that name for my oldest....so it's like my father named him. He passed away when I was 18, so this made me very happy.

Ha! that's how my eldest ended up with 3 names! We were not only told, but assured that we were having a girl (even after hubby pointed to the ultrasound asking about the "protrusion". The tech said it was the umbilical cord). So as we're about to take our bouncing baby boy home, the nurse called reminding us that we had to give him a name so that they could order his SS card. We ended up naming him after my father, stepfather, and step brother.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I joke that I also have an "OMG, it's a girl" name, though my parents insist they had both a girl and a boy name picked out.

I really think they thought I was going to be a a boy, though. Mostly 'cause of little things.

Like my Granny crocheted blankets for my and my sister before we were born. My sister's is mostly pink with alternating areas of what I call "ice cream colors", whereas mine is mostly brown, with alternating areas of autumnal colors.

Plus, we had these little babies in a crib thing, and sis's baby was a girl, but mine is totally a boy.

And I know my name, if I was a boy, was going to be Ryan Patrick.

But, anyway, I really came to this theory when I discovered that Colleen is a name of Irish gaelic origin which means girl.

Yes - my parents named me "girl".

So I joke that they were expecting a boy, but I popped out, and they were like, "OMG, what do we name her? Oh, I know! We'll call her girl!"

message 26: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Awww! This is one of the reasons why I'm hesitant to go all out for the upcoming nephew's arrival... it could be a niece!

But then, I'd be just as happy with that, and I'm all about the belief that little girls should have blue things too! Also, according to QI, pink used to be the color for little boys, way back when.

Felina My mom was counting in me being a girl. They had two names picked out: Felina and Rachel. No boy names were considered.
